Tools For Learning

When you embark on making a deeper commitment to your spiritual Path, there are often exercises, readings and studies that present themselves and offer opportunity to expand your knowledge base as well as the spiritual aspects of our Wiccan practice. Listed below are a few of the staples that are cornerstones of a successful and productive practice. Some you will do daily, others less frequently and others still only as the occasion or need arises as you move forward on your Path.

Meditation

“The pathway to good INTENTion is paved by Meditation”

There was a time that meditation was not a traditional part of practice of Western Hermetics. This protocol was strongly identified with those practices of Eastern philosophy and as such were not routinely incorporated into a strictly earth-based nature centered religion. As the craft has evolved the benefits of many of the Eastern protocols are realized to be not only compatible, but largely supportive of a well structured practice that incorporates mind, body and Spirt in the work. Meditation has become a primary and essential part of magickal work. Training oneself to sit quietly, observe their thoughts or listen for inner guidance is a discipline that will spill over into your mundane as well as spiritual life. It teaches you to relax and quiet your physical being and your mind. Setting aside time on a daily basis to engage in this discipline also teaches you how to focus and either expand or narrow your perception. These are the skills needed as we work magick and in ritual to keep us anchored in the work we are engaging in. The process of meditation is the creation a firm base of self-awareness, heightened experience and union with the Higher Self and the Divine.

The act of meditation has been used for centuries as a tool for health restoration, spiritual endeavor behavior modification and self-awareness. A regular practice of daily meditation has been clinically proven to relieve stress, reduce blood pressure, enhance the ability to maintain productive attention and contribute to the general well being of an individual. Despite all these obvious benefits, many people find it difficult to establish a regular and consistent meditation practice.

The focus of your meditation does not always need to be the same. This can change as you move through your work. You will want to use this quiet time for connecting with or gaining information from a Deity you may be working with; use it to enhance your visualization skills; de-stress after a stressful day; or as part of ritual or personal work to enhance the overall concentration and intensity. Be sure to record in your journal your intent, focus and results. These can proved quite useful in the months that follow. And, in accord with the act of meditation, it is generally the easiest time to write down thoughts with clarity as you have stilled the mind to outside distraction and opened to a source within.

A very simple daily meditation that incorporates the chakras (energy centers) of the body can be found here in pdf format on the Book of Shadows page:

Breath Work

Breath Work and training yourself to slow and rhythmically pace your breath are vital aids towards improving your meditations and quiet moments of reflection. The Four-Fold Breath Technique develops awareness and control of the breathing process, which is the foundation of energy work. This technique also provides greater relaxation and deeper breathing, using fuller capacity of the lungs. This is an excellent way to begin a meditative session or use as way to relax into and open to the journaling process. At this point in our studies you should be well acquainted with the results of this type of breathing as an entry way into a deeper state of being.

Another technique is Alternate Nostril Breathing. This aids in opening both of the pathways of energy that run concurrently in our bodies; specifically, the Lunar and the Solar. We often favor one nostril over the other in our normal pattern of breathing. When we consciously engage the breath in and the exhale out using both nostrils, more movement within our energetic circuitry and for those with allergies and other respiratory ailments, there is greater flow of oxygen.

• Beginning with the right nostril , using your right thumb press the right nostril closed and inhale through the left – Hold.
• Pinch the left nostril closed with the index finger and exhale through the right-Hold.
• Inhale through the right nostril – hold. Pinch the right nostril closed with your thumb and exhale through the left.

Repeat the cycle of inhaling through one nostril. Pinching closed, then exhaling through the other. And so on. Repeat this pattern for 8 sets. When you have completed the cycle, you should feel a sense of clarity and energized calm. This exercise is an excellent way to begin your daily activities and your evening meditation practice.

Energy Work

Energy practice incorporates the use of focus, breath, intention and direction by engaging the chakras and subtle bodies in active energetic flow. How we later use the energy we have stimulated depends on what outcome we wish to produce. Additionally, the method we use to raise our energetic state is also determined by the outcome desired.

  • Physical methods include:
    Breath work
    Movement- dance-martial arts
    Toning- Chanting
  • Affecting Energy Through States of Consciousness includes:
    Meditations
    Pathworkings
    Visioning

For most people the first experience of sensing energy occurs with a physical sensation within Solar Plexus (diaphragm region). These are the butterflies we may feel of excitement or fear- energy is moving in accord with our emotional state. Sometimes there is a tingling or tickling sensation that occurs when the flow of energy is opened. As the work and practice continues, the origin of initial sensation that is the precursor of energy raising may move to the throat center or sensations in hands or feet. For this reason, it is important that you take some time to research and learn about our energetic anatomy.

Some ways to energize, enliven and bring more awareness to the chakras..

There are many benefits to consciously doing a practice which includes strengthening and cleansing the chakras. As continual receptors of energy that surrounds routinely visualizing your chakra centers as vibrant in color and form serves to purify and cleanse unwanted build up of negative or residual non-productive energy. This also ensures that as you do any energy work (yoga, tai chi, Qigong, meditation or other type of energy practice) the organs of the subtle bodies will be in good working order. You would not consider running a marathon if you had not trained properly and the same is true of any sustained practice you intend for your subtle bodies. Visualization alone is a good start, but if you can also include the element of toning, you will be enhancing the efforts through the vibration of energy within each of those chakra centers. Sound carries its own rhythm and pattern and when combining with the already flowing patterns and rhythms within each chakra point, you can subtly change the quality and flow of that energy to one of better production, higher amplitude and thus receive more of a healing and regenerative flow through the work.

Observation and Visualization Exercises

Observation exercises, which are designed to enhance your skills of observation of the world around you keep you more fully aware of areas of change and areas of stagnation. These gems of visual wisdom can then be applied to the flow we have moving through our own practice and space of experience. Many of the Western Mystery paths have at their core the skill of refined and detailed observation, which can then be used and trained into a modality of visualization. Most people have difficulty visualizing or seeing in their mind’s eye something they have never seen before. Through training ourselves to be accurate observers, even those things which go largely unnoticed at the time of seeing something are, nonetheless, imprinted and stored in our storehouse of memories. These can later be used as we begin to more concretely develop a set of exercises and practices to enhance our own inner path.

Physical Practice

Any physical activity that creates greater body awareness will serve you well in your spiritual growth. Some considerations and ways to facilitate a working, healthy physical vessel are:

  • Regular Physical Exercise- Walking- Tapes- Yoga, etc..
  • 5 Elements Exercise:
    Water – swimming
Fire – sweat lodge- weight training
Air – the need for speed- cycling- running- sky diving- skiing
    Earth – hiking- gardening- climbing
Spirit – let’s get the CHI moving Martial Arts – Pilates- dancing- walking
  • Adequate Rest:
Making sure that you get quality sleep is important to the process of walking a nature-based path. Your physical being is part of the nature that we honor and hold dear. Taking care and giving love to our physical nature is the highest form of tribute we can pay to the God and Goddess. And, of course

Eating well and regular exercise gives the message to your physical self that you are cared for and as a spiritual vessel, I will honor you.

The Path of Devotion

01
“When a human reaches up to his/her Higher Mind and accesses the vibrational gifts from that realm (of his or her own higher consciousness), she or he will be filled with inspiration and courage. And this type of inspiration and courage could change the world through actions that are then taken by that individual.”
… anonymous …

What is Devotion?

A Definition of Devotion….

1. Ardent, often selfless affection and dedication, as to a person or principle.
2. Religious ardor or zeal; piety.
3. Commitment to some purpose;
4. An act of religious observance or prayer, especially when private.

If we look at the definitions above we have a sense of the complexity of this word. And, that complexity can take on many forms and nuances as we move along the Path. If we are not devoted to the work, we will not put forth the maximum amount of effort. If we only give half-heartedly, most of the effort is wasted and dissipates just as quickly as it was generated. Devotion to self, Deity, the work all serve as anchors that hold together the many spokes of the wheel around which we establish our place in magickal working.

Some Keywords that relate to Devotion are:

sacrifice            commitment
questioning      formulating
aspiration         inspiration
yearning           laying claim
expanding        contracting

Think about what each of these mean to you. Which resonate more deeply and which do you feel should not even be on this list. Periodically checking in with what the definition of a Devotional Path means can give you valuable information about where you

The Essential Elements of Devotion

If we look at devotion through the lens of the elements we see the cycle that occurs in the process. These Three elements form the Triad of Fire and Energetic Awakening (AIR/FIRE/WATER).

“This is the FIRE that ignites the Passion and YEARNING for THAT which it seeks out and willfully  INFLAMES

FIRE

The Youthful stage that is enthused and excited about new found information, Deity and practice. This is the stage that ignites the desire to learn more, do more and be the most effective we can. It is the combined energy of enthusiasm stimulating the urge or desire to move forward that allows us to become a fertile ground within which the seeds of devotion and dedication are quickened.

WATER

We evolve from the impetuous nature of Youth and move to the place of guardian, nurturer and sustainer of what we have taken as our own. Because we have given time and energy to the process we are able to claim authority over our feelings of devotion. Through our efforts at sustaining this “faith” and state of dedication we then become also the providers of that energy. Wanting to share what we feel and enable others to feel the power and glory of dedicating oneself to a path of devotion.

AIR

When we arrive at a place of “faith” and ownership of the ideals and energies we have found upon the Path we have a sense of conviction that is based upon internalization of those energies. We identify fully with what we are devoted and dedicated to. We wish knowledge for the place of service it may allow us. We wish communion with the Divine because that is our birthright and we wish for the best outcome for all, knowing that we are part of that recipe.

Incorporating Devotion into Your Practice

Setting up an Altar dedicated to a specific Deity is a beautiful way to display your dedication and devotion to that particular Deity. Acknowledging your Path and the work you have achieved on that Path as you sit in contemplative medication is an affirmation of your Devotion. Each time you spend a moment in thought about the magick that surrounds you, the marvel of your physical body and give thanks for those others who share your life generates the energetic pattern of Devotion. Just as the rose in the picture at the heading of this page shows, there are many chambers that are unfolding at any given moment. Some are hidden and others are there for all to see. But, all lead to the very center and heart of the flower. And it is by ever striving towards that center that we find the many ways that devotion forms and shapes our lives.

I Sing the Body Electric

fractalspirial2
Give up, and you will succeed.
Bow, and you will stand tall.
Be empty, and you will be filled.
Let go of the old, and let in the new.
Have little, and there is room to receive more.

The wise stand out,
because they see themselves as part of the whole.
They shine, because they don’t want to impress.
They achieve great things, because they don’t look for recognition.
Their wisdom is contained in what they are, not their opinions.
They refuse to argue, so no one argues with them.

The Ancients said:”Give up and you will succeed”.
Is this empty nonsense? Try it.
If you are sincere, you will find fulfillment.

The quote above is one that I read often. It reminds me of the amount of energy that is expended simply in being present and cognizant. It also calls me to a place of action that is infused at a cellular and subtle level by the products of “trying”. The most important concept I take from this quote is the amount of energy I waste when I get in my own way.

The Ancients said:”Give up and you will succeed”. This sentence, alone, speaks brilliantly to adopting a state of mindfulness and a basic knowledge of how energy flows in and around us.

Energy… The Definition of

1. The capacity for work or vigorous activity; vigor; power.

2. Exertion of vigor or power: a project requiring a great deal of time and energy.

3. Vitality and intensity of expression: a speech delivered with energy and emotion.

4. Usable heat or power

5. Physics. The capacity of a physical system to do work.

If we look at the definitions above, we get a clearer picture of what and how energy works and how it relates to a magickal Path. We are by nature energetic beings. Although we may not feel that way, and will often resort to ingesting those substances which we feel we need to produce more energy, renewal is as easy as breathing fully for a few repetitions. We have, at our fingertips more energy than we would ever need. Accessing it, however requires 1) Awareness – 2) Opening and – 3) Connection.

We cannot make use of that which we are unaware of. It may on occasion seep into our state of being, but is largely undirected and unfocused unless we consciously acknowledge and direct its use. The next phase is knowing how and when to allow ourselves to be open conduits through which this Universal energy may flow, revitalize and enliven. And, then connecting fully to this downpour and movement in a way that is productive, of use and made with intent.

When we engage in energy work we are beginning an alchemical process. Alchemy concerns itself with transformation and transmutation. Maintaining an energy practice and using energy in our magickal workings changes the way in which we move through the world as well as the effects we have on that world we are moving within. Our awareness becomes heightened as a by product and this we become more sensitive and in touch with the subtle energies that surround us. Things that would normally go unnoticed come to the foreground. Movement of energy, and the interweaving of energy are the primary goals of magickal work, whether it be ritual, spell work or personal practice.

What is the Source of Energy?

The Alchemical Process

The Law of Resonance states that everything in the Universe is energy or vibration and when a strong field of vibration is introduced to a weaker field of vibration, the weaker will change in frequency to match that of the stronger one. This is the basis process that occurs when we take note of our energetic field with a simple exercise such as rubbing both palms together- slightly parting the hands and being able to still feel a connection between each, although separately. We have created the conditions for our resonating now with the energy around our hands, and in turn that energy is responding and pushing back against the pattern we have generated.

Universal Source, the Divine

The FIRE within and all around (tendency towards heat when the energetic fires are aroused- hands become warm, might feel the sensation of warmth spreading throughout body) is generated by a Universal Source. Energy embedded information is available for us to tap in to. For most , however, they remain oblivious to that storehouse and plethora of revitalization. By default magick workers are also energy workers.

The Foundations are Elemental

the_four_astrological_elements_in_relationships_1
East = Air = Mind
South = Fire = Will, Desire and Action
West = Water = Emotions, Intuition and Flow
North = Earth = Our physical bodies, Foundations and Fertility

One way to approach what the components of a personal practice should include is to be sure to include something that aligns with each of the four basic elements. We work so closely with the elements in Wiccan practice that this is yet another way to integrate those energies into our magickal and mundane worlds.

EAST – Mind

tumblr_static_7gtki6hf2doossc4c0wokwkcg

Those practices that utilize your intelligence, that inspire and make use of air.

Reading and Breath Work

SOUTH – Stoking the Fires

imgres

Those practices that utilize your inner desire and will, that catalyze and make use of fire.

Energy Practice and Chanting/Toning

WEST – Emotional/Intuitive

imgres-1

Those practices that utilize your feeling nature, that open the intuitive nature and make use of water.

Journaling and Divination

NORTH – Physical

imgres

Those practices that utilize your physical energy, that make you move and make use of manifest reality.

Movement, Drumming and Hand Crafts

The list is endless and the combinations of work are only limited by your own creativity. Review the lessons about the elements and their energies. Remain open to the possibilities and allow your inner guidance to direct you towards a practice that will be reflective and in resonance with your magickal self.

Know Thyself

Hebrew_Pyramid
” I must first know myself, as the Delphian inscription says;
to be curious about that which is not my concern,
while I am still in ignorance of my own self would be ridiculous.

Plato
(427?-347 B.C.)

In order to build an effective personal practice it is vital to engage and be familiar with all the bits and piece s that comprise your physical, spiritual and energetic make up. Last month we discussed using the parts of Self to create the Magickal Persona. Knowing how each of these energies play out in your day to day activities can help you draw upon those types of experiences, exercises and tools that will resonate harmoniously with your personal path of development. So, please reread through this excerpt from last month. This time from the perspective of how to engage each in an active way of regular, sustainable practice.

Review of The Parts of Self

“When we enter sacred space or engage in a magickal working, we do not enter alone. We bring onto that space the sum total of all the pieces of our experiences physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Each of these experiences are processed through our consciousness and it’s varied states of being.

A core component of the process of creating a Magickal Self is integration and communication between all the levels of our consciousness. In many spiritual traditions there are 3-5 levels or states of being that are embodied within the human being and are the holders of the Universal energy pattern. These parts act individually but are also interdependent upon one another to achieve a balance and bring the body into a place of Self-hood or wholeness.”

These Feed and Fuel our way as we cultivate the tools of choice in crafting our spiritual practice:

Lower/Physical Self
I Have

The Lower Self ( Lower Mental) is our primal instinctual nature. This is the physical body we inhabit and the conscious self that responds and reacts to stimuli in the physical world through our senses and tactile abilities. This is the self that we rely upon for the creating a practice that is satisfying and stimulating enough to keep us interested. This is the place that we seek the tangible and concrete results that provide us with the inspiration to continue.

Middle/Emotional Self
I Want (to Become)

The Middle self more closely relates to the subconscious mind. The place of dreams and aspirations; of emotions and feelings. In this space of selves the desire to Know, to be to dare and to dream are manifested. This is the fuel that we use to catalyze when doubt sets in. This is the fuel that ignites the will towards action and to keep going despite challenges. This is the food we sup upon when the hunger to do the Great Work of Self sets to rumbling the void that is needed for the Divine to fill.

Higher/Mental SELF
I Will Become

The Higher Mental self is the super or Higher conscious self. It knows the results of the subconscious desire working upon the conscious mind and has transcended to a place of “knowing it will be”. Accessing this self calls forth the awareness that everything is continually striving towards self-awareness and a deepening of understanding that connects us to the greater cosmos. We use this intention in personal practice as we reach out to our Deities, Patrons and Guides to assist us in our progress. We also hold this as the ideal towards which we are stretching, knowing that everything must change and in that process of change we become the version of ourselves that we are seeking.

The Spiritual SELF
The Divine Spark
I AM

The Spiritual SELF is the continued contact and communication with the impulse of the Divine. There is no longer a need to Have or possess. There is no desire for anything; for it is all and at once formed and formless. Using this Self to inform and enliven our personal practice is the affirmation that we are already Divine in nature and thus already possess whatever knowledge is required to advance our spiritual nature in accord with and for the highest good of all.

We discussed last month how these parts of Self interact as the Magickal Persona is crafted and called into being. We use these in the same way as we move through the daily pursuits of our practice. In fact, if we think in this way than any act we take that holds the intent of sustaining a viable spiritual practice will be done with the idea that the Magickal/Spiritual and the Mundane aspects of ourself are working collaboratively.

Overview of the Lesson: 8 – Personal Practice

Do not wait; the time will never be “just right.” Start where you stand,
and work with whatever tools you may have at your command,
and better tools will be found as you go along.
… George Herbert …

Developing Your Spiritual Practice
Knowing the basics of the Craft, acquiring the Tools, creating your Book of Shadows and Light and all that we have discussed thus far will not be sustained unless you have established a regular practice that feeds and enhances those components that are the basics of a Wiccan Path.

The Path of Devotion
Pursuing a magickal path is hard work and requires discipline and practice, practice and more practice. As we move through this lesson, we’ll take a look at those things that comprise a basic form of spiritual practice. As you become more adept at the magick you are working, those practices will change.

Know Thyself
The famous quote that stood above the entryway to the Oracle of Delphi states: “Know Thyself”. In magickal work, we need to know all the parts of self that comprise our physical and spiritual being. The greater the knowledge we have of our inner workings the more drawn we become towards walking The Path of Devotion.

I Sing the Body Electric
We move through this world as energetic beings and offer up our Devotion whole heartedly, body, spirit and mind. Enhancing that energy requires us to see ourselves as The Body Electric- vibrant and full of light and life. We will explore other tools that can be used to facilitate an effective personal practice and set up a few guidelines to follow in establishing a time-line that is proactive, productive and doable.

Foundations of Practice:
The Foundations page this month will be excluded as the entirety of this lesson is centered around those practices which form your core studies.

Reading and Resources:
Reading and resource suggestions are scattered throughout this month. Be sure to check out all that are recommended and add a few of your own to be revisited and reviewed.

Time to Grow
So, let us begin the work at hand and make this work our own set of practice….

I sit in the quiet of the space
Of my creation.
Breath and manifest being
Weaving a dance of life.

The singing bowl rings in harmony
With the levels of my being
And throat gives way to
Tone of vibration
And sounds of the
Universe.

I am whole
And complete.

My practice is that of
Knowing and my magick
Weaves through time
Anchored
In my
Stillness…..

Developing Your Spiritual Practice

master
The First Steps

Spend some time contemplating what is written in this poem. Envision it as the steps you move through as you prepare for the sacred work of “you”. Breathe into the words and enliven them with your feeling, your intent and your will. Allow them to move through you empowering you as you set to the task of crafting what will become your own tools of practice…

I sit in a place of quiet
And the tensions of the day
Fall like droplets of water at my feet.

Before me is a candle of light
That opens my mind to the
Potential that lays within.

Below me is the floor of
My home that is the
Strength and foundation
That supports and holds
Me in its warm embrace.

Above me is the shelter that
Keeps me warm and dry as
The elements rage and winter
Takes its icy hold and Summer’s
Heat blazes igniting all that
Fall within its potent rays.

I sit and I connect with
My innermost thoughts
And this sacred space
Holds my secrets and
With silent encouragement
Moves me along my chosen Path.

Definitions of:

Spiritual
1. Of, relating to, consisting of, or having the nature of spirit; not tangible or material.
2. Of, concerned with, or affecting the soul.
3. Of, from, or relating to God; deific.
4. Of or belonging to a church or religion; sacred.

Practice
1. A habitual or customary action or way of doing something.
2. Repeated performance of an activity in order to learn or perfect a skill.
3. A session of preparation or performance undertaken to acquire or polish a skill.
Archaic Use – The skill so learned or perfected or The condition of being skilled through repeated exercise: out of practice.

If we consider the definitions above, we see a pattern emerging. To be effective, this practice should incorporate components that become an established part of your routine; is acted upon daily and with the intent of making progress in whatever area of focus your intent is directed towards. It is a way of “being” that improves and progresses as you are affected by the changes this regular state of being initiates. Fundamentally, a personal practice is that, which through specific action, intent and goal inspires growth and feeds all aspects of your being as reflected by its products of outcome.

The Tools of Use

You are the first and foremost ingredient in creating your own recipe for a successful and fulfilling practice. It is through you that energy moves and connects to all the subtle levels and permutations of its essence. It is your physical state that enables expression and manifestation of the lessons of your experience and engages others in this process of change and growth. It is your mind, heart and will that act as vehicles of communication with the finer spiritual nature of those physiological parts of yourself and are ultimately capable of dialogue with your Higher Self. Altars, incense, books, and creation of dedicated and sacred space are all wonderful additions that engage you at different levels, but if you had none of these, You simply sitting quietly and reflecting on what your beliefs and philosophies are would do much in the way of propelling you forward on your path and reflecting the core of your true Divine nature within. Your magickal and spiritual practice is part of that essence that makes you who you are and is a mantle you cloak yourself in as the metamorphosis of your personal development takes place.

Your Personal Goals

One of the first steps towards maintaining a meaningful practice is to Assess (and therefore, Access) Your Personal Goals. As we become more adept in going through the motions of our practice, the need to redefine what currently is working and what more will need to be added and/or subtracted to keep the enthusiasm and dynamics alive for forward growth is of increasing importance. Revisit the questions you asked of yourself that fueled the identification of how your practice should look and feel initially. Then, modify and expand in accord with your growing baseline of information, experience and action. The initial pursuit of developing yourself may have been spurred on by the desire to be of greater service. Ask yourself, what “service” means to you now that you have more experience in the workings of your chosen path. Be mindful that those philosophies and goals that were so important to you early on may have diminished in their need for fulfillment, having been replaced by renewed interest and desire for what seemed unimportant at the time. This is particularly relevant to the types of studies you engage in.

My path is aligned with that of the Western Mystery Tradition. Therefore, I include Astrology, Qabalah, the Lunar and Solar mysteries as part of the daily routine I have. I also incorporate a component of Eastern Philosophy that I brought with me from previous experience and practice in the form of energetic and subtle body working. Initially, my beginning practice was not as inclusive of so many overlays. This took time and fine-tuning of what I believed to be true when I began this work and how that truth changed at all the incremental markers along the way. As I developed more familiarity with the paths of connectedness between many of the studies of both Eastern and Western magickal practices, my goals towards learning and integrating some of these changed. Had I remained rigid in what my practice should be, I would not have included some very important pieces that inform all of my working.

Being mindful of the astrology of a specific day, allows me to fine tune an energetically based meditation I may do that evening to align and draw more fully on the energies of the lunar or solar pathways. Having a solid foundation in the Qabalah, allows me to draw from some of the magickal exercises that engage specific spheres of the Tree of Life that further enhance the properties of the meditation. The result is a rich and deeply satisfying meditative experience that I can then use in my coven work, my mundane activities and informs my writing and teaching. Routinely setting aside some time to get in touch with your changing inner needs and interests will set you closer towards a spiritual Path that enlivens and resonates more fully with your full spiritual potential and is both flexible in its boundaries and justifiably selective in its filters.

Making the Time

Finding the time to maintain consistency of practice can often be a challenge. This is where creativity and discipline come into play. The discipline aspect requires that you do something every day, so it becomes a habit and as naturally integrated into the fabric of your life as eating and breathing. Creativity can step in and carve out 15-minutes of a lunch break spent outdoors with a focused intent to connect with the natural surroundings. Taking a shower can provide 5 minutes of quiet to reflect on the water as it cascades over your body, how it feels and the rhythm and pulse of its energy. The act of eating a meal and taking the time to intentionally “taste” each and every bite and giving thanks for those who have prepared it and the energy of the food opens multi levels of experience that can be cross referenced through all of the disciplines of study you’ve selected. And, ideally, 15 minutes when you arise spent in quiet reflection and 15 minutes in the evening before you go to bed engaged in a study, breath work, journaling or some other activity that aligns with your spiritual goals is what you should be trying to establish. The what and the where will change out of necessity but the keynote of the active form of “practice (the persistent effort)” is what fuels the desire to be consistent; much like the endorphins released in exercise which become a daily craving.

In conclusion, refining and maintaining a personal practice can be as varied and diverse as you wish it to be. There is no right or wrong way. It is refined and colored by your uniqueness and individuality. And, as you move along your chosen spiritual path, there will and should be change. Listen to your inner guidance and follow your instincts. You will know when to add, delete or amp up a notch a specific component of your practice in accord with your personal growth. And, always remain open to the possibilities, for when you least expect it, the jewel of who you truly are as defined by and created from your efforts of practice will shine for all to see.

To use a closing analogy near and dear to my heart: In theater terms you could think of your practice as being the collaboration of all of the supportive components that go into the final product (ion). The carefully chosen venue is your Path or Tradition. The stage, costumes, choreography, script and music are the tools of your Craft, working together in a cohesive fashion and informed by the level of expertise achieved through practice and refinement. The multiple layers of lighting illuminate and accent what you wish to bring to the foreground and the painted scenery are the planes and levels of subtle being through which the action takes place. The well-rehearsed lines offer up the articulation and breath of inspiration to move you forward along your precisely choreographed Path. The audience is select in their expectations and includes all those seen and unseen; and the many parts of your psyche and Spiritual Self all waiting in anticipation and excitement at what creative act of inspiration will be brought forth. And the Show (of great acclaim) is the interpretation of the Great Work of your personal practice that has been crafted to be shared broadly and widely as an expression of joy, your truths and the power to transform oneself to stand brightly lit in the spotlight of the many faces of the Divine.

* This posting has turned up in various iterations and speaks tot eh work of spiritual practice by that very statement. As the years have passed I have learned more of what is best for evoking specific response and growth for myself. These have remained stable at the core of their intent, but the various forms of expression that have emerged move and flow in a flexible way.

A Book is Not (Always) Just Another Book

adeptbookofshadows1This page will give you a jumpstart on creating your own Book of Shadows and Light – aka. BOS

As we continue through our Year and A Day on the Wiccan Path you will want to begin a Book of Shadow and Light. This is essentially a journal or guide that holds special Quarter Calls, rituals, information and results of herbs used, incense recipes, spell work ,etc.. It is your own personal record of your magickal workings. It is called a Book of Shadow and Light to correspond to the polarity of all magickal workings. That which is overt and that which is hidden from plain sight. This journal should be dedicated to holding your magickal process and not used for mundane or other purposes.

A Book of Shadows may also contain journal entries that relate to the work done and the after effects. I prefer to keep these entries in a separate journal, since I often will go back and review them and it is more portable to carry a smaller journal. You will also want to bring your Book of Shadows into sacred space with you; especially if there is a specific call, invocation or order of ritual that you wish to repeat precisely as done previously.

Generally, your BOS is not something to share with others, hence the mystery that often surrounds such a record. It is your own personal journey and committing that journey to writing gives power and intent to the works that you do. It is also a history of your beginning steps on the Path of the Wise and can be used as a treasured and valuable resource as the years progress, your skills and knowledge increase and truly living a magickal life has become a 24/7 experience.

What Should It Look Like?

There is no preferred style or set and fast rules about what form or how your BOS should look. Some prefer an actual journal type book; others prefer to use electronic files and keep everything on the computer. One is not more effective or better than the other. The important thing is to make it your own.

Personalize it in your own unique style. If it is an actual book handle it frequently. You are then also imprinting your energy into it in a physical and manifest way. If it is electronic, BACK UP your files regularly. Open them regularly and as you are typing establish a flow of energy that moves with intent from your hands and fingers into the keys as you type. Remember, as with all magickal working and practice, INTENT is the basis of movement forward on your desired path. With that thought in mind, your BOS can be as simple as a spiral bound notebook from the dollar store or as elaborate as a finely decorated handcrafted journal. Journals make wonderful magickal gifts and since they are used up readily, having several on hand, when just the right spell, insight or ritual presents itself is invaluable.

Journaling Your Entries

BOSYAD7

As we learned in our Lesson about the creation of Sacred Space; using such a space is perfect for making the entries in your BOS. Information is freshest just after completing a ritual. So, if you are working a solo ritual, remain for whatever time is needed to record your experiences and make note of what worked and what didn’t etc. You can even incorporate this into part of the working so this act becomes part of the ritual itself. If attending a public ritual, there is usually time and space after to jot down a few notes before leaving. I have often sat in my car after a potent ritual and committed everything to my BOS before I started my journey home. And then completed more the next day as other insights revealed themselves.

Regular and daily entries can be done in a space you have selected to be your writing area at home. It does not need to be permanent. A cleared table top, folding wooden table or corner of a desk can easily be transformed for a designated amount of time and then returned to its usual state thereafter.

Here are some files to get you started and feel free to print out anything posted in our lessons that you feel would be useful to have readily at your fingertips.

Clothing Your Intent

Within the Ceremonial Magick Traditions every piece of clothing and jewelry has its own intent, meaning and order in which it is put on prior to ritual. Although there is not such rigid structure within the Wiccan Path, I have always felt that it is important to begin your intent as early on as possible before magickal work. And, this would also including “robing up”, as we often say when it is time to get ready.

When we put on clothing and jewelry that is specifically dedicated only to be worn in sacred space and working it helps to transition the mind into the head space that something important and different is about to happen.  It is for this very reason that we wear special clothing for weddings, funerals, to impress at a job interview, etc.. A portion of this process is the visual impression offered to those seeing us, but at the very fundamental roots of cause it is our own signal to shift gears and get into a different mode of thinking. The same is true with ritual clothing. We are donning outer garments that will be a reflection of the inner work we will be doing.

The care and keeping of these tools that become an extension of ourselves in much the same way as  that of our magickal tools should be executed with thought and care. Keep your ritual clothing clean, in good shape and protected in a garment bag, beautiful wooden box or other place of your choosing. Covering and separating these from mundane wear is a good practice as these garments will, to some degree,  pick up the energy of the ritual space in which they were worn. No matter how enjoyable or potent a ceremony may have been, removing the ritual garb and re-clothing in mundane wear brings your mind back to the place of the present moment and physical space to begin the process of adequately grounding excess energy. It would be ill advised to remain in the head space of ritual all the time.

Ritual Robes

A ritual robe is a highly personal statement of how you wish to present yourself before the seen and the unseen. Traditionally, it would have be sewn and fashioned entirely by hand and by yourself. This is still preferable, although it is understood that everyone has different abilities with a sewing machine, needle, cloth and pattern. If you start with the basics of what you would need in a variety of settings a simple black and another simple white robe would fit the bill. Some witches wear the black robes during the dark half of the year and the white to signal the transition into the Light or waxing year. Colors and patterns  can always be added later.  Some sew specific sigils or embroider or bead the neck or sleeves of the robe to further enhance the energy they have been working towards.

As to what is worn beneath the robe, that again is a personal and oftentimes practical consideration. Naked underneath and barefoot in ritual are very empowering, but if the ritual is out doors in 50 degree damp weather in the woods, warm clothing and shoes are a definite must. Remember we did say that the body is a temple and should be honored. Keeping yourself warm and dry goes much further in allowing your focus and intent to remain, than “looking the part” but being completely disconnected because of physical discomfort.  Be creative in what you choose and pick or create something that expresses you.  This will be a piece of ritual clothing you will wear and use often.

A cloak over the robe is another option that many witch’s select. Typically, when outdoors the cloak served as warmth and a certain amount of camouflage in the darkness of night. Historically, the cloak was the first type of outer garment worn for many of the reasons above. There are many beautiful selections for cloaks nowadays beyond the simple woolen black or dark weaves.

There are many options available for finding just the right ritual wear. Stores that are Celtic themed often have appropriate clothing. This is also a reason why the Ren Faires are so popular with pagans for finding ritual garb. And, don’t forget that Halloween stores often reveal treasures that are affordable in price and fit the bill nicely. My first black robe (with attached hood) was purchased at a Halloween store and I have used its simple shape as pattern for many other robes. This has served me well for more than 15 years!

Amulets and Other Jewelry

pentacle

An amulet or magickal pendant worn in ritual space goes well beyond just a pretty piece of jewelry. It can serve as an anchor for the collective experiences of the rituals you’ve attended. It can hold specific energy as needed for your magickal working. And much more. The choice of sigil or symbol should be made with intent and you should not simply choose an amulet because you think it looks good. If you are drawn to a particularly symbol, do the research and find out what its meanings are and how they fit into what it is you are wishing to create around yourself.

If you choose to select a god or goddess image for your amulet, be sure you know what type of energy that Deity encompasses. Sekhmet, although a popular choice has a very dynamic and powerful energy that may be too potent for most to have nearby for every working. Take your time in making a selection and once you have settled on what best expresses you, the amulet should not be worn for anything other than magickal work. Clean it regularly and keep it in a protective case when not being worn.

In addition to an amulet, some also dedicate a ring to be worn during magickal work. The ring may have a specific stone or crystal set into it that acts to balance, energize or stabilize the energies within the witch. In some Traditions, the magickal ring is received as confirmation that a specific high level of initiation has been received by the adept or magician. This ring holds the power of that initiation and is reminder of the oaths and responsibilities that are inherent in holding that position.

Whatever your choice in jewelry and ritual wear, be specific in what statement is being made, research the meaning and symbology behind your choices before settling on anything specific and then clothe yourself in the integrity and honor that wearing these symbols of your Path requires.

X’anyuae- Part II

X’anyuae exhaled a clear and intention-filled “yes!” and she stepped through the archway and into the sacred chamber. As soon as she passed through she felt the first of the changes in her physical form take hold. Heat spread through her like wildfire. It was not I the least unpleasant as she had developed a tolerance for this phase of the transition. It had not always been so and the memory of her first time entering this chamber flashed quickly through her mind’s eye.

She had been told that a change would occur as her body changed its frequency and energetic pattern to resonate with that in the chamber. But, she had not been told how sick it would make her the first few times it happened. Read More..
