What Are the Hidden Worlds?

sacredgrove

Of all of the lessons thus far, this one is by and far the most expansive, illusory and subjective in nature. As I sat to write this lesson, a flood of ideas, topics and experiences poured in, and all of it just as easily slipped through my grasp as the subject itself.

Everything that is known of these realms and the beings who inhabit them is held in concert with every other piece of information, teaching and experience we have had in past and present lives. Deeper understanding through practice and use (both magickal and mundane) of the elements leads to greater potential for communication with the Elementals. Consistent and preliminary work at developing the subtle bodies aids in communion with the more refined (energetically) spirits and entities. Just as knowing something about the culture, language, etc.. of your chosen vacation spot allows for more enjoyable and deeper experience, the greater and more expansive your knowledge base of the arts and sciences sets up a point of reference and therefore an interface through which we can be more clear in defining what type of energetic being we are contacting.

They Are Right Beside Us…  into-the-faerie-wood_src_1

If we think on the “known” information that most children sense and engage in other than real worlds all the time, we are given clue as to the proximity and shape these worlds may hold. Many move simultaneously and congruently along side of or interwoven within our own physical reality.

It is these worlds that we catch a glimpse of as openings in the fabric of what we see on our physical landscape. The fleeting half shape or flickering strand of light that seems to slip as it were between the folds of our background. The shadow of form that was “just there” and seemingly disappeared. The key to differentiating between their world and our physical state is largely held in the parameters and laws of vibration and refinement of energy. Ours being of the same vibratory level as our physical state of being; therefore our ability to function, see and move through this reality we call the physical plane. Within each of their own realms of existence, the inhabitants of the otherworld realms exists in much a similar fashion; each resonating and vibrating to their specific realm’s energy. And on those rare occasions achieved through work and spiritual preparation (whether having been done in this lifetime or others) or vibratory rate matches that of another realm, we are offered glimpses, journeys or entre into those worlds.

Everything Evolves…

The worlds and their inhabitants are subject to the evolutionary paths just as we humans are; the only difference being in what form that evolution may take and the baseline that has already been achieved thus far.  In fact, the entire Universe is engaged in a constant Path towards refining, recalibrating and expanding. With each of these incremental expansions new life forms, new worlds and new possibilities are brought into being or awakened in a greater state of awareness. And, in accord with the Law of Causation (Cause and Effect); each evolutionary push affects All Beings in Every Realm.

With this thought in mind I offer for consideration the article below. Although, this may seem hardly relevant as analogy, please read through and keep an open mind..

The Machinery of the Mind
by Violet Firth (Dion Fortune)

Chapter II: THE EVOLUTION OF THE NERVOUS SYSTEM

“The easiest way to grasp the organization of our complex nervous structure is to study its evolution from its humble beginnings in the simplest forms of life. In single-celled animalcule, the most primitive type of living creature, a single cell performs ) all the functions of life; it moves, breathes, assimilates, excretes and feels. With the . development of multi-cellular organisms, however, different cells are given different work to do, and made to do that and nothing else.

It then becomes necessary that co-ordination should be maintained between the sense organs that perceive the prey and the muscles that move to its capture, and for this purpose other cells are used to specialize in communication.

Thus it will be seen that the functional unit of the nervous system is not the nerve cell, but what is called the SENSORY-MOTOR ARC, consisting of a nerve carrying the incoming sensation from a sense organ and making contact with another nerve which carries the outgoing impulse to a muscle or organ.

When a multiplicity of muscles becomes available for movement, it is necessary to further link up the sensory-motor arc. So that other parts of the structure may be brought into play and the response not be confined to one muscle alone, nerve cells form loops upon the arcs, and loops upon the loops, with further intercommunications among themselves. The organization becomes more and more elaborate, admits more and more complex reactions to stimuli, till finally the wonderful complications of the human brain are achieved.”

As above, so below. As within, so without…

Now, having read through this explanation of our nervous system, let’s compare this to the state of affairs in the greater Universe and the evolutionary process of the many beings, energies and forces that flow through a similar pattern of evolvement. Therefore, if we think of the links and modalities of communication between worlds, planes and their respective inhabitants, with all reaching towards a greater understanding (or gnosis) the linkage and process might be very similar to that which is reflected within our own bodies. As the need for improved and greater communication increases new branches of nerves grow and change. As one form of energetic being moves upwards into a higher state of being, all other levels are impacted. The need to reform, restructure, add and redefine everyone’s role in the process produces new links of exchange, communication and interaction. And, all is comprehended, and acknowledged in the space of the master regulator or primary source of information, The Limitless All (aka; the Brain).

Bonus Foundation: Lesson Ten

Use this bonus foundation as a practice for an existing Tarot interest or to try out a new divination tool. Read through the poem and the description of the basic energies of Tarot Key II: The High Priestess.  Then, speak aloud a simple query. Something like-

Where is my space of strength?
What do I need to be aware of now?

Keep it non-specific, not something like:
Is he/she my true love?
Will I get that new job?

Just relax and let the information flow as you remain open to what presents.
Note: You do not need to purchase a tarot deck. Double click on the image and it will open on a blank page.

I am the Middle Pillar
I am the essence of the Moon and all her mysteries are mine to command
I know the secrets of the Soul and the ease of balance
I hold the key to questions yet unasked and I am the Gate to your Higher Self

The High Priestess is the embodiment of the Divine Feminine and the Cosmic Creator. She sits placidly between the Pillars of Severity and Mercy. The penultimate figure of balance, and union of both Pillars. She is the still, quiet voice of ancient wisdom and intuition, opening us to the depths of our spiritual potential. The High Priestess beckons us towards moving beyond the mundane experiences that bind us and to gaze upwards towards the Divine potential that we bring with us into this physical state of embodiment. When we embrace this truth , we open ourselves to the Greater Mysteries and the intimate connection we share with all life in its aspiration towards evolutionary growth. Having the High Priestess present in a spread is a call to taking a closer look at your spiritual nature, your connection to the word at large and how you navigate between living in accord with spiritual pursuits and endeavors and mundane responsibilities. This may also be a call to bring your actions, thoughts and feelings to a place of grace. To move through your world knowing that you are of the Divine Nature and as such carry the great mysteries within. She is the Gate Keeper of occult (hidden) wisdom and to sit in her presence within the abode her temple of initiation is to experience the peace of self-realization.

Some Tarot Basics

The cards of the Minor Arcana speak to the day to day issues. The people represented on the cards are easily identified with vs. the more symbolic and metaphoric imagery of the Major Arcana. Each of the suits of the Minor Arcana cards has significant and relevant meaning as well, so you want to take into consideration what story the suit of the card tells as well as the number and picture represented. The reading tells a story, so always think in terms of connections and links, each card to the other. Depending on the number of cards used and the specific layout it is helpful to consider the diagonal line of cards as well as what appears overtly near one another.

The Tools of Spell Casting

John William

Some Not So Obvious Tools

Practical Experience:

The mechanics of spell work force us to expand our knowledge base of Self, as well a show that Self operates in the larger cosmos. What begins as a desire to manifest a specific outcome, quickly becomes the tool upon which we base our greater work. The paradox is that to do a healing spell we must become the healer. To affect a love we must first be the love that we desire. To change the world, we must be that change.
The most important tool is you and your energy. Having a balanced sense of your parts of self allows you to engage those that will be of best assistance in achieving what your goal is. Take some time to review:

Review Me, Myself and I: The Parts of SELF from Lesson Seven. It is the integration and cooperation of these selves that makes for effective spell working. You are, after-all, calling out to the Universe and its energies to recognize and reward you for your efforts.

No, these next two are not typos or redundancies. These are the recurring themes that form the foundations of ALL your work.

Meditation:

Meditation is a primary and essential part of magickal work. Training oneself to sit quietly, observe their thoughts or listen for inner guidance is a discipline that will spill over into your mundane as well as spiritual life. It teaches you to relax and quiet your physical being and your mind. Setting aside time on a daily basis to engage in this discipline also teaches you how to focus and either expand or narrow your perception. These are the skills needed as we work magick and in ritual to keep us anchored in the work we are engaging in. The process of meditation is the creation a firm base of self-awareness, heightened experience and union with the Higher Self and the Divine.

The act of meditation has been used for centuries as a tool for health restoration, spiritual endeavor behavior modification and self-awareness. A regular practice of daily meditation has been clinically proven to relieve stress, reduce blood pressure, enhance the ability to maintain productive attention and contribute to the general well being of an individual. Despite all these obvious benefits, many people find it difficult to establish a regular and consistent meditation practice.

The focus of your meditation does not always need to be the same. This can change as you move through your work. You will want to use this quiet time for connecting with or gaining information from a Deity you may be working with; use it to enhance your visualization skills; de-stress after a stressful day; or as part of ritual or personal work to enhance the overall concentration and intensity. Be sure to record in your journal your intent, focus and results. These can proved quite useful in the months that follow. And, in accord with the act of meditation, it is generally the easiest time to write down thoughts with clarity as you have stilled the mind to outside distraction and opened to a source within.

Breathwork:

Energy follows awareness. Breath builds and directs energy. Learning to more effectively control, direct and manage your breath can make for very effective direction of energy and focus in your spell work.

Some of the More Common Staples of Spell Work

Candles

Candle Magick makes use of the properties and energies of a candle, color, etc. to direct the focus of energy towards a desired outcome. It is for this reason that candles are used in High Magick/Ritual workings. They become the physical representation of God or Goddess, the transformative power that lights all others or the symbol of the inner fires of Will.

In spell work a candle not only provides a point of focus, but also acts as a container for the energies gathered and worked upon. Allowing the candle to burn down completely releases the spell into the flow of universal law. Lighting the candle for several nights can build the effect and acts something like a slow simmer. Holding the heat and intensity, but carefully and slowly releasing the essence allowing all the flavors and nuances to mature.

Colors

Using a specifically colored candle enhances the effectiveness of the spell. These are some of the common color correspondences used in selection.

White – Light and reflect all colors back.
Red- Will, action
Pink for love of the heart.
Orange – for attraction. Communication, energy.
Yellow – well being, concentration, intuition, health, strength.
Green – represents health and healing, money, changes and renewal, fertility.
Blue – spiritual, healing, memory, calming and centering.
Indigo – Brow, third eye, psychic center. Helps to see aura. Psychic awareness.
Purple – Crown center, royal color, Deity, spiritual.
Brown – Stability, the earth, growth, potential.
Grey – represents intuition.
Black – contains and holds all colors, shields and filters

Herbs

For a listing of some commonly used herbs and their magickal properties check out:
Herbs for Magick

These herbs can also be formulated into oils and plant essences. Oil is used more effectively for rubbing into a candle to be used than the dry herbs. Dried herbs can be added to any liquid that is incorporated in to the spell or works nicely for sachets, or spell pouches. Flowers, roots, petals and leaves are sometimes difficult to find depending on the geographical area in which you live. Using flower essences may be a more viable option in allowing you to obtain an ingredient that may be otherwise difficult to come by. Think first about what the medium is that you will use and then decide on what would be the most compatible form of the botanical.

Allspice – Money, prosperity
Lemon Balm – Love, success, healing
Cinnamon – Psychic work and love spell
Clove – Protection, fidelity, success
Feverfew – Protection
Frankincense – Protection, spirituality, purification
Lavender – Love, purification, calming
Mint- Money, healing
Mugwort – Psychism, prophetic dreams, strength
Sage – Longevity, wisdom, protection
Vervain – Protection, purification, money, youth and restorative properties
Yarrow – Courage, love

Astrological or Moon Phase

There are several sites on the internet that will give you accurate information about both the phase and astrological sign of the Moon or Sun. If you are planning to incorporate specific planetary energy in a specific astrological sign you will need an ephemeris. This form of listing will allow you to plan more in advance and can be quite useful in your regular workings and rituals as well.

Astrodienst: Swiss Ephemeris

Temple of The Cosmic Spheres – an online resource for astrological phases and solar events. I will be starting an online astrology course in April. Stay tuned!

The End Game

This list is only the briefest of ingredients that can be used for spell work. As you begin your writing process, remember to be creative. Try to make cross connections between the items that represent the symbols of your spell and what you choose. Twine or embroidery floss work well for spells that are used to bind something. Coins or game money can be used to represent the suds you are wishing for in a prosperity spell. A page from a planner with dates planned for rest and renewal can be used for spells involving a more relaxed state of being or more restful home life.

Happy Spell Casting!

High Magick vs. Low Magick   (Practical Magick)

There are generally two specific types of magickal working. High Magick and Low Magick. This does not denote that level of effectiveness or potency, but rather the nature of the working and more specifically the energies and entities involved in the process.

High Magick is work done with the specific intent of achieving a spiritual, mystical goal. Ceremonial Magick, commonly employed by followers of the Order of the Golden Dawn and Qabalistic Magick all work with the formality and formularies of High Ritual. The work is done in a ritualistic manner; always with a circle being cast, energies of the quarters called and statement to the seen and unseen regarding the intent. The work is formal, structured and well planned in accord with the desired results. The intent is one of connecting with the Divine, in celebratory or communal process and for the purpose of devotion and/or personal spiritual development.

Low Magick includes Folk Magick, spell work and those workings that seek to affect the mundane world using the tools and energies of the mundane in concert with the spiritual to bring about a desired result. These are the practical workings that we do on a daily basis in accord with our life or communities needs. Those who were the pagans of an agricultural society and worked from dusk to dawn, had little if any time or need for elaborate ceremonies; therefore the practice of low magick was straightforward and to the point with little fanfare. Feathers, stones, herbs, flowers and other natural items were the ingredients used to work magick to ensure a good crop, fertility in marriage or protection from those who it was perceived would do harm.  These needs have transformed to some degree in modern society, but the underlying premise is still the same; that of improving or safeguarding those things we need or desire.

Now, this is not to say that never the two shall meet. In fact, workings that are intended to affect change at a global or cosmic level often incorporate both the structure and formalities of High Magick as they employ their work at a mundane level using many of the same tools of ingredient that operative magick would make use of.

The SPELL: A magickal working directed toward the achievement of some goal such as obtaining, banishing, changing a condition, etc. Sometimes refers to the verbal part of the ritual.

Spell work is generally categorized as Low, Operative or Practical Magick. We cast spells as we cook. Carefully preparing and choosing the finest ingredients to produce pleasure and nourishment for ourselves and those we love. Sitting and writing that special sentiment in a birthday card or sharing condolences intended to comfort are crafts of spell work. Prayers offered up for a loved one’s health and the even the simple gesture of a hug and kiss accompanied by words of “have a good day” are spells cast. Sending out the intention to obtain a parking space or have the traffic light change in our favor is spell work. These and more are done transparently and largely unknowingly as we move through our daily routines. Now, doing these actions purposefully and in full awareness transform the routine into the extraordinary.

The Tools:

Adding layer upon layer of compatible and supportive tools onto the energetic working of the spell gives the extra oomph for success. Additionally, the extra time, care and effort in selecting just the right ingredients activates the process of intent and desire before the actual working is done. When each of these preliminaries is checked off the list, you will have sent out the etheric template of what you wish to manifest and set up the first steps of calling forth what you desire.

The Basic Ingredients:

Words create and set forth the necessary vibration that interacts with the vibratory state of energy that surrounds us.  We’ve talked in previous lessons about how we are effected by and affect energy. Spell work sets up a direct line of communication between the energetic creation, or thoughtform, of what we wish to have occur and introduces/inserts it into the flow and fabric of universal energy.  It is for this reason that we try to work in support of those energies by assessing and making use of moon phase, astrological timing, specific Deity and so on.

*** A little aside. Take a look at the shape of the intro spell for this page. In addition to using specific word and rhythm, often a form or shape can be embedded or (reveals itself ) in the way the lines flow. This silhouette makes me think of a very full short trunked Tree with plant life extending out beneath.  (And, no I rarely drink alcohol and have never taken drugs)

Symbols that represent the thing we wish to draw towards us:

Symbols are employed in all aspects of magick. These appeal to and open our visual senses as the mind forms its connections that stimulate the recalling of latent memory. Sigils, amulets and glpyhs are some of the geometric forms that can be added to your spell work. (More on these in future lessons). The most asic of symbols that can be employed are color and numbers:

Color – Using candles of specific color and/or incorporating color into altar cloths, etc.. bolster the energetic support for your spell.

Red – Love, action, stimulating
Yellow – Strength, mental pursuits, communication
Blue – Healing, serenity, prosperity
Green – Fertility, prosperity, growth
Orange – Joy, enthusiasm
Purple – Spiritual matters, psychism
Black – Introspection, release, generic color
White – Illumination, purity, generic color

Numbers – the number of lines in the written spell, # of objects used, # of times of repetition, etc…

Petition to appropriate deity, spirit or entity:

Some use the Archangels in their spell work:

Raphael – health issues – Air
Michael  – protection – Fire
Gabriel  – miracles and change in resolution – Water
Uriel  – information – Earth

Or Gods/Goddess:

Vesta – for matters of the home
Venus/Aprhodite – for matters of the heart
Hermes – wisdom
Brighid – fertility of all manner
Toth – insight and knowledge
Ra – light and empowerment
Ma’at – justice and order
Cernunnos – earthly matters and animals
Lugh – skill and mastery
Hecate – transformation and the ancestors
Sekhmet – courage and ferocity
Isis – magic of all forms

The Cosmic Connection : Making use of planetary energy (including Planetary Hours) and astrology to establish the time frame for your spell is a very effective tool.

Planetary

Sun – strength
Moon – healing
Mercury – communication
Venus – relationships
Mars – assertiveness
Jupiter – expansion
Saturn – structure
Uranus – change
Neptune – psychic development
Pluto – shadow work

Astrological

Libra – balance and refinement
Scorpio – surfacing what lay behind, transformation, revealing
Sagittarius – networking
Capricorn – perseverance in manifest endeavors
Aquarius – innovation, larger perspective
Pisces – compassion and all loving kindness

The Process:

First and foremost is INTENT:

Think clearly about what you need. If you need a car, perhaps it would be best to do a spell that will help you to bring a car into your life, rather than asking for a few thousand dollars to come your way so that you can buy a car. Magic can work in many ways and you might be limiting yourself if you don’t stay open to all possibilities! But remember, magic works best if you really need something, rather than just wanting it.

What is the premise for this? When we are in need we are genuinely fueled by desire for and the energetic predisposition towards action to obtain whatever that desire is. When we simply want something, there may be wavering in the intention set out, and not enough of action in follow through. Think of it this way. Someone who is hungry and starving is motivated to manifest food and will take the necessary steps to getting food.

Be As Clear And Concise As Possible In What You Want:

Unless you are imminently pressured to perform a spell immediately, the best practice is to thoroughly plan out and make the necessary preparations for an effective spell. Sit down and think through what it truly is that you wish to manifest. Once you have this narrowed down, think about what that manifestation would look like. Add as much detail to the image as possible. If the spell is for a new job, what would that job involve? What steps would be needed to qualify you for this job? What would be the optimal setting for this job?  Be as specific and detail oriented as possible. In magickal workings open-ended means precisely that. What you may be imagining as outcome and how the universe perceives that request are generally very different. If however, you can specifically and clearly give image, voice, shape and form to that request, you are more likely to achieve the desired result in a way that replicates your need.

Maintain And Direct Your Focus:

If what you wish to manifest has many steps involved towards the final outcome; work on each step fully before you move to the next. This works in accord with fully directing your intent and focus towards a singular purpose. As each step is realized, then begin the process of calling forth the next.

Work In Accord With The Natural Flow Of Universal Energies:

Choose the correct timing for your spell. If the spell has focus on new growth begin the working during a New Moon. If it regards something you wish to bolster, strengthen or bring fully into manifestation, execute the working during the Full Moon. And, if you wish to release or transform something do your working during the waning phase.
Always focus only on one spell working of magic at a time. For best results, channel your intention and energy in one direction and don’t scatter it on multiple goals.

Set An End Date:

Setting a goal date to accomplish the fruits of your spell gives boundary to what has been set forth. It also gives more focus to what is being done because you have narrowed in. You also do not want to have the energy of your spell lingering needlessly. This keeps you accountable for cleaning up what you have begun, and also gives markers along the way that allow you to modify, change or redirect with additional boost as needed.

Ethics…

The most popular spells are those for Love or the acquisition of money. These in and of themselves are not of ethical issue, but when they are constructed in a way that is manipulative of another person’s will, that crosses the line of personal gain at the expense of another. Ethically, we of the Craft seek to work in accord with Free Will and responsible action, knowing that what we set out as intent will return to us. With these thoughts in mind, accountability is the prime motivated in the type of spell work we chose to engage in.

Now, this is not to say that there will never be a time when a spell of negative outcome is not appropriate, but if executed be mindful that the same mal-intent will find its way back to you in some way. I will give you a specific case in point. Last year I had my driver’s license, credit card, bank card, mother’s bank card and license taken from my wallet while in a park. The thief took the cards out of my wallet, put it back in my purse and I only realized this later in the evening when I pulled out my wallet to pay for dinner. I immediately went home and checked my accounts. More than 15,000 had been charged to my cards within 2-hours! No leads, nothing!

I thought about the fact that they were in possession of merchandise that was not theirs and how many others they had pulled this trickery on. And, I thought about the consequences of cursing the thieves and exerting my magickal will towards justice. What resulted was carefully and intentionally phrased and was focused on:

  • The disabling, breakage and destruction of what had been gained through finances that were illegally gained and actions that were at the expense of those who had not given their permission for use.
  • All cameras and brilliance of light would reveal actions that were illegal and unjust, taking what was not given with permission from another and any action that knowingly caused financial harm to another.
  • All was prefaced and ended with the condition of “for the highest good of all concerned and harm to none to were obeying the laws of property that is not your own to take.

I do not know if this spell worked, but I held the intention that it would save someone else from the inconvenience that it caused me. So, what does all of this have to do with a Love spell? Setting a spell into motion to attract to yourself the same energy of love that you are willing to share with another, leaves the opening for that attraction to be made because of free will. Setting into motion a Love spell specifically directed at someone, removes that free will from the equation and although you may find joy with that individual for a time, more often than not the illusion fades and what you thought would be the ideal match is not.

Always include…” For the Good of All”

When creating the wording for your spell, remember to include the phrase, “For the good of all!” This phrase will help your spells to enhance your life, without having your good fortune being at the expense of another. Another useful phrase is, “This or something better now comes to me.” Often that which you want at this point in your life may be different from what you really need, and it’s only when you look with hindsight from a future point in time that you can realize this. So, by asking “for this or something better,” you leave yourself open to greater possibilities becoming available to you

Consequences…

When something comes into your life, certain responsibilities come along with it. Nothing is free. Even those things that do not cost money, still incur a price of time, effort and maintenance. For example, when doing a spell to get a car, remember that along with the car comes registration costs, oil and repair bills, perhaps monthly loan repayments, etc. Are you in a position to handle these? A Law of Exchange is always at work when magic is used. Sometimes what you have wished for seems to come out of thin air, with little effort on your part, but often it will arrive from more mundane sources

Wording…

Spell books are great resource for ideas but the spell will work better if you put it into words that are meaningful to you. Always frame your spell in positive words, actions and outcomes.   Your subconscious will respond in the appropriate way to that which is phrased in a way that is in support of what you desire. Unless you are specifically trying to release negative attributes keep it in a positive light. If you are releasing something you feel is harmful, name it but be sure to call to yourself the positive things that will replace these negatives. Nature abhors a vacuum, so whatever is released leaves an opening for something else to enter.

Lastly, Be Realistic In What You Want…

Spell work is not the equivalent of rubbing the genie’s lamp and asking for things that exemplify greed, lust and overindulgence. Of course everyone has their own perceptions of what is realistic and what is not. If you hold fast to the thoughts of not only looking at what you desire, but what the consequence of achieving that thing would be and what measure of true happiness and benefit it will provide this may give you pause to set you sights on what is achievable and will produce the best outcome for all concerned. Beginning spell work to obtain a job with the Bolshoi Ballet wont’ be of any benefit if you have not done the hard and physical work of training in classical ballet.

After the Spell has been Cast:

To BE Silent:

Do not discuss your spell with anyone. This dissipates and dilutes the energies. What you have carefully woven, is now open to receiving the energies, input and thoughts of the person you share the information with. Remember, “energy follows awareness”, so by casting the light of awareness on your spell it can now lay open to energies other than that of the Deity, spirits, essences and others that you worked so hard to gain support from.

The Necessary Work:

Setting forth a spell will not be successful if you do not also do the work necessary at the mundane level to help it along. In other words, asking to be guided towards new employment will not occur, if you do not make the effort to look and put yourself in places where the manifestation of opportunity will present itself.  Spell work for health will not manifest if you continue to pollute your body with alcohol drugs and cigarettes. Be sure to follow through to the extent of your mundane capabilities.

A Final Tip:

Familiarizing yourself with the basic Universal Laws is a way to enhance your spell work. We often use these intuitively, such as the Law of Correspondence- As above, So below- but knowing them in the fullness of their intent and then using them appropriately as you set the energy of your spell into motion gives that extra boost to a finely tuned engine.

The Law of Vibration
The Law of Correspondence
The Law of Polarity and others;

The Tools for Divination

imgres

Some Common Tools of Divination

Below you will find a listing of the most commonly used tools for oracular work.  Take some time to explore the various options and go with what feels right to you. Be aware that sometimes what you feel is absolutely the right option may lead you to something you have more interest and ultimately more engagement in and are better at using.  I started with runes, moved to a brief stint with the Oghams and finally settled on the Tarot as my primary tool.

The irony is that at the very beginning of my search into the options, the Tarot was something I had the least interest in and just did not feel anything calling me to its use. With that being said, the experience of trial and error has however, offered opportunities to incorporate some of those tools in ritual or when the Tarot is just not the right source, I have other options I am familiar with that give the information I need in the form I need it. As with everything on this Path, you change, your spiritual nature changes and evolves and so do the tools, interests and those things that enhance and enrich your experience.

I’ve included links to more information on the internet that might prompt a closer look. Enjoy..

TAROT

tarot spread

” Tarot came to me in early 1970, when a fellow English teacher in the State University of New York offered to read my cards if I would give her a ride home. I remember nothing about the reading except the effect the cards had on me. The pictures, and the stories hinted at in them, and the book of symbolism that went with them totally fascinated me. I found a deck and began to read for my friends, and explore what lay behind the pictures. That exploration continues more than ever”... Rachel Pollack, Author and Tarot Grand Master

Tarot cards are one of the primary tools of Divination used by witches. The visual imagery, the ease of handling and the general interest and curiosity, even among those who would be skeptical of other forms of divinatory practice makes them all the more engaging.

Tarot cards, which were an early form of today’s playing cards, entered Europe in the 14th century. Feliciano Busi described the tarot cards as being “from Saracinia” or Arabia. Then, they were used to play a game called tarocchi. Some theories suggest that tarot cards were created around 1410 to 1430 in Milan, Ferrara or Bologna in northern Italy and that some additional trump cards were later added to the suit. These new cards were known as the triumph cards. They began to be used to play a card game similar to bridge. The game of triumphs gained popularity in the northern regions of Italy and eastern France. The cards underwent certain changes in pictures and symbols depicted on them. Tarot cards soon became popular in Sicily, Austria and Germany. This type of tarot cards exists in the form of fifteen fragmented decks painted in the 15th century for the rulers of Milan … The Tarot: History and Symbolism by R. Place

A good basic deck to start with is the Rider-Waite. Its symbology was created by members of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn and contains a wealth of esoteric and mystical keys within the visual depictions. Learning the basics of interpretation and symbology using the Rider-Waite deck. Undertaking study of the Tarot and ultimately gaining proficiency in it is a long and methodical process.

In a reading, various spreads (or ways to lay the cards out in a specifically chosen pattern that will assist in obtaining answers to the query) are used depending on the nature of the question. A simple three card spread representing past, present and future can be used for most queries. The more elaborate multi-card spread of the Celtic Cross will give more information that can be gathered together as pieces of a puzzle that will answer the various aspects of what is being questioned.

More about Tarot Spread and suggestions later…

SCRYING

Scrying makes use of the medium of reflection. The intent and focus is directed while gazing into or on a surface that is smooth and often glass like. As you gaze into the surface, shapes and images may form that give answer to the query of intent. Common scrying tools include:

  • Crystal Gazing

highres_12435689

This is the stereotypical crystal ball that is commonly associated with Witches and Gypsies. Most crystal balls are clear and made of lead crystal, glass, or natural quartz. They are best used for scrying in lighting that is not glaring or at full level.  You may also see crystal balls made of obsidian, amethyst or selenite. Just as crystals have specific energies, so will the spheres of these crystals have differing ways of connection to them.

Generally the ball should be 4-5″ in diameter so the surface area is large enough to comfortably maintain focus within. Try not to place your crystal ball where reflections of a lamp will create pockets of unnatural light within it. Holding the sphere in your hands creates a kinetic connection to the crystal and adequate shading for visualization.

  • Candle or Fire gazing

divination-theatricsIn this form of scrying you would look into the central flame of the candle. Observe the shapes that it may take; the colors and the impressions that may run through your mind as you are seeking answer to the query that has been posed. If you able to be at a camp fire or bonfire, often the larger density and area of flame offers a wonderful screen to look into. Again, make note of any shapes, forms, colors or impressions that are received as you gaze into the flames. A small firepit in the backyard is a great tool to develop this skill.

  • Water Scrying

waterscrying

Water scrying – also known as hydromancy is an ancient form of divination that has much in common with mirror and crystal ball divination.

Water scrying was a common feature of pagan and shamanistic cultures because of its connections with nature. The water concerned was often the surface of a smooth lake and it was common to scry by the light of the moon. Indoor water scrying can be performed by using any bowl that is large enough and can be dedicated and consecrated for scrying.

Once technology evolved to allow the production of scrying mirrors, these provided a more convenient alternative to water divination. Many modern pagans still prefer the natural connection to water and the feeling of oneness that it gives.

  • Mirror Gazing

mirror_scrying

Mirror scrying is an evolved form of water scrying. When it became possible to build mirrors they were regarded as being like water that was fixed into one place. The early mirrors were made of polished copper, brass, marcasite, tin foil or mercury behind glass, polished silver and obsidian. All types of mirrors may be used for scrying and the size is not important, although many prefer to use a black mirror. The use of black mirrors may be traced back over the centuries. John Dee used a black mirror of obsidian. When using a mirror for scrying you do not want to see your reflection, so you would generally place or leave the mirror on a table and look at it from an angle.

$_35I was given a black onyx scrying mirror pendant for my scrying_mirror_5_12_inch_mediumThird Degree initiation. The back side is a simple circle of onyx; the perfect black mini scrying mirror! This has proved useful at times when a larger mirror or other surface was not available or I wanted a more discreet method of retrieving information.

PENDULUMS

  • PENDULUM Scrying

Excerpted from a Witchvox Article by Salix Alba

“The Ancient Romans first originated ‘scrying’. The first pendulums ever used were merely inscribed rings, hung on thread. Now-a-days, modern scryers prefer to use small pendulums of natural stones and crystals. (At times metal or wooden pendulums may also be used.) When I speak here of modern, I mean modern 1930’s, which was when the very first crystal pendulum was used for contact with the paranormal by a famous psychic investigator, and Ghost Hunter by the name of Harry Price. Price thought up the idea of using a pendulum in the paranormal after observing a French water douser by the name of Abbe Gabrie successfully locate water with the pendulum in his presence.

The swinging pendulum method is generally used to ask “YES” or “NO” questions to entities or spirits who are talkative, and active around the area of the investigation, or personal altar area. Sometimes a pendulum board may be used for further communication by spelling out answers with letters, or by giving out coordinates with the numbers etched upon it. This method is quite similar to the “ouija board” (or spirit board) method. However instead of the use of the Ouija planchette, the pendulum is used.”

PALMISTRY

excerpted from  The History of Palmistry

Judging by the number of hands painted in prehistoric caves it would seem that palmistry held a interest for humans since the stone age. Archaeological discoveries have discovered hands made of stone, wood and ivory by ancient civilizations. The emperor of china used his thumbprint when sealing documents in 3000 bc. Information on the laws and practice of hand reading has been found in Vedic scripts, the bible and early Semitic writings. Aristotle (384-322 bc) discovered a treatise on palmistry on an altar to the god Hermes. The greek physicians Hippocrates and Galen (ad 130-200) were both knowledgeable about the use of palmistry as a clinical aid. Julius Caesar (102-44bc) judged his men by palmistry. Notable people such as Paracelsus (1493-1541) and Fludd (1574-1637) brought respectability to palmistry through their writings. Later Dr Carl Carus, physician to the king of saxony in the 19th century matched palms to personality. Advances in genetics, psychology and forensics have propelled palmistry into the modern age. In 1901 Scotland Yard adopted the technique of fingerprinting in criminal investigation and identification.

Medical researchers studying skin patterns (dermatoglyphics), have discovered a correspondences between genetic abnormalities and unusual markings in the hand. Research has confirmed a link between specific fingerprint patterns and heart disease. These days palmistry is well accepted throughout the world. Professional palmists can be found reading palms in every country in the world. Pick up almost any copy of a women’s magazine and there is some information on palmistry. There are thousands of books written on the subject and there are palmistry clubs the world across.

Ancient Alphabets:

Runes – Norse

rune_divination

Runes are an ancient Germanic alphabet, used for writing, divination and magick. They were used throughout northern Europe, Scandinavia, the British Isles, and Iceland from about 100 B.C.E. to 1600 C.E. Runic inscriptions of great age have even been found in North America, supporting stories that the Vikings arrived in the Americas long before Columbus.

Oghams – Celtic

Ogham - D064 hazel

The Ogham (or Ogam) form an ancient Celtic alphabet, based on species of trees and used both for inscriptions on monuments and for the organization of knowledge. There are 20 original Ogham, with a later addition of 5 more; this version uses the original 20. The Ogham are in some ways similar to the Norse runes or Futhark, both as an alphabet for inscriptions and as a system for divination; however, the Ogham’s use as an index to a comprehensive system of knowledge is distinctive.

I Ching – Chinese

iching2

Excerpted from  The I Ching: Sacred Books of the East  Vol. 16 by James Legge

The I Ching, or Book of Changes, is the most widely read of the five Chinese Classics. The book was traditionally written by the legendary Chinese Emperor Fu Hsi (2953-2838 B.C.). It is possible that the the I Ching originated from a prehistoric divination technique which dates back as far as 5000 B.C. Thus it may be the oldest text at this site. Futher commentaries were added by King Wen and the Duke of Chou in the eleventh century B.C.

An I Ching interpretation is performed by making six binary decisions (a hexagram). This is called ‘casting the I Ching’. These are written down as a stack of six solid or broken lines. This was traditionally done either by tossing yarrow stalks or coins, although there is no reason why the hexagrams can’t be generated by some other means (such as a computer program).

imgres-2

There are actually four possible values for each of the lines; the two on/off values, and a line which changes from on to off or vice versa. Thus one cast of the I Ching can generate two different hexagrams, which adds depth to the interpretation. The sophistication of this method has not escaped modern interpretation, and the four-valued logic has been compared to the biochemistry of DNA amino acids. How a Neolithic shamans’ divination technique presaged the basic logic of the human genome is one of the ageless mysteries.

The Care and Keeping of Your Divination Tools

Your tools of Divination will become densely charged with energy as you regularly use them. If you do readings for others, they will also draw in the energies of those people. It is therefore, very important that you keep them clean, covered from daily energies and limit the amount of handling they have from someone other than yourself. They should be treated with respect and care as these are the vehicles that help to stimulate and carry the energies that provide the information needed. With continued use they become an extension of your own energy.

Once you have settled on a particular tool, it should be consecrated and dedicated to its specific use just as was done with your magickal tools. Refer back to the Consecration Ritual you used to consecrate your athame, wand or other.

Tarot Cards

If you use Tarot cards, they should be kept covered when not in use. A beautiful cloth or decorated box is a good choice. I keep a crystal in with the deck to absorb any residual energies and then regularly cleanse the crystal. Tarot cards should be cleansed after any reading that is done for another. Handling your cards as the querent pours the intent of their query into the cards also means transference of their individual energy.  Purifying them with incense and wrapping them in black fabric with a quartz or hematite crystal will continue the cleansing process. Left overnight, the stone can then be removed to be cleansed of what has been absorbed and the cards placed back into their box or cloth they are normally kept in.

Crystals

If you use a crystal pendulum, there are several ways it may be cleansed.  The easiest is to place it in a small bowl and cover it with sea salt. This can be left for several days. Usually the weight of the crystal is a give away as to its needing to be cleaned. As the crystal absorbs energy it will become slightly to overtly heavier when held. Depending on the stone this can be easily felt as in the case of hematite. There is often a significance difference in the weightiness of the stone if left out to gather peripheral energies.  It is also for this reason that pendulums should be kept in a bag so as not to gather energy continually. Most will come in pouches. Just be sure to select or make a pouch from a fabric that is thick and opaque. Velvet works nicely, as does suede cloth.

Mirrors and Bowls

Mirrors, bowls or any reflective surface should be kept clean and dry (if water in placed into). Be sure to dry thoroughly after each use. Wrap it in a soft, dark cloth and store somewhere that it will not be broken. Routinely smudging with incense or sage before and after use is a good practice.

The Basics of Divination

imgres-1
Know Thyself

” I must first know myself, as the Delphian inscription says; to be curious about that which is not my concern, while I am still in ignorance of my own self would be ridiculous.”

Plato
(427?-347 B.C.)

When we hear the word “Divination” it usually conjures up a picture of the gypsy fortune-teller who will predict your future love interest, dream job or soon to be received wind-fall. In reality, divination can take on that form, but it can also serve as a highly effective tool in extending and solidifying your energetic and psychic connection to the world around you. Lest, it be believed to be a less than a reputable source for information remember that kings, queens, politicians, warriors, dictators, businessmen, corporate giants and many others who would be considered “too rational” to believe in such “stuff” have routinely consulted with those having oracular abilities. The horoscope scrolls placed strategically at cash register’s end weave their magick and often engage even the most resolute of skeptics – if for no other reason than curiosity.

In ancient times those who practiced the art were called oracles, soothsayers, shamans, sorcerers, mages, fortune-tellers and more. The art, itself, in recent years has moved from that of being shrouded in mystery to the forefront of magickal workings with books, workshops and training in abundance. The internet is abuzz with “plug in your question and receive an instant reading” sites which are frequented daily by those needing “to know”. I use the word “art” because in its most pure, undiluted and non-commercialized form, divination remains a skill, that even with a natural predisposition towards natural ability still requires practice, hard work, a substantial knowledge base of magickal systems and years of study to elevate its effect beyond “parlor tricks”.  So, what then are the mechanisms and guidelines for the serious student of Divination?

Expectations or Fate vs Free Will/Choice

Many who come to the diviner’s table accept whatever information is received as being the sealed deal. And, it is also those same who are often either disappointed when they do not meet the future lover with blonde hair and blue eyes or subconsciously manipulate their interactions and surroundings to fulfill the said prophecy. Neither scenario is good outcome, nor what the expectations should be. If we consider the information received as being simply that – “more information” this allows us greater option in how to exercise our free will and consequently how we will use that information. If approached in that manner, rather than allowing that information to narrow and limit our choice, giving excuse that Fate expects us to obey blindly, we open to the possibilities of making choice of a potential outcome based on the consequences of our will, not that of a diabolical Universal Plan. Take the information received in Divination and mull it over, meditate upon it and then act upon it in a way that is now fully informed by having pieces of a larger picture afforded you.

The Focus and Intent

We’ve talked of the importance of Intent upon any magickal working and the ultimate success or failure given the specificity of that intent. Divination uses this same important component to draw the information received into a concise form. In order to align yourself with energies that are able to align and resonate with the answers sought, the work of developing a state of focused and directed energy towards that goal is also required. Quieting oneself, visualizing that you are in alignment with the source of all knowledge and removing your conscious mind from the distractions around you opens the subconscious to retrieve what is needed. It is precisely this principle that accounts for those flashes of inspired though when least expected and when you are most relaxed and not actively trying.

A nice analogy is to use is the idea of your focus and intent as being the zip code that is added to that important bill payment. If left off, it will eventually be received at its destination, possibly late enough to incur a penalty for the lack of clarity. If added, that piece of mail will be promptly sorted and directed towards its destination on time and in support of future good credit when that all important purchase is made.

Developing the receptivity necessary for a clear stream of information can be cultivated through development of a regular meditation practice. This component, as stated in prior lessons, trains the mind to remain fixed, clear and precise in what its desires are. This is what also makes it an excellent tool to incorporate into your practice of learning to work with a divination tool. In the work of Divination a large portion of what is received will be filtered through your own understanding, so to minimize the internal interpretation (particularly if you are doing readings for others) you want to set aside a portion of your own consciousness and work from a state of consciousness that is receptive and open to pure communication devoid of internal commentary. Most importantly you also want to be able to actively turn off the extraneous noise and distractions that convolute the stream of flow and setting into a tangled mess of miscommunication.

Reading for Yourself

It is for this reason that doing a reading or Divinatory work for yourself can be a bit more challenging. You know what outcome you wish to occur (albeit often at a subconscious level, but it is there nonetheless). You know every weakness and strength that you overtly display. You already have more information about yourself than you would any client you are reading for. So, subjectivity in the reading and filtering the information will be colored with these known as well as those unknown biases. And, if you are anything like me I LOVE to play mind games with myself! So what to do?

Remember the act of focusing and getting the preconceptions of your mind out of the way? This is where dedicated practice (meditation) will help. And, having this pre-sorted information does play into the clearly formed query. Most importantly, rather than a detriment, the subconscious can be an ally, as long as the intent is clear and the focus strong. Remember, we carry within ourselves the solution and answer to every problem, query and situation and the storehouse of memories, past experiences including ways of coping that were both productive and negative are stored as well. We do already know the answer, ultimate the solution and the precise course of direction to be taken, that once received and processed through the Higher Self’s understanding is exactly what the action should be.

The process in reading for others is largely the same, with the exception that the focus and intent are directed towards connecting with their subconscious store-house or experiences through the information you are getting. As you relate to them the information received (it generally will make no sense to you and your work is not to restructure and interpret that information through your own understanding) it opens keys and connections within their own framework that can be processed and ultimately understood within their context of what is being asked.

*** As a side note. When I do tarot readings for others I do not ask what the question is. I have the client silently focus their intent and query into the energy of the deck I will be using and then begin the reading. My feeling is that I want to go into the reading in a state that is unprejudiced and unbiased to a specific answer as possible. Now, there have been times when I sensed that it was important for the client to state his/her query; largely because it enabled the person to open more fully. In those circumstances, the client would have shut down the energetic connection made and the information received would have been more consciously driven and manipulated to fit the situation. This is not necessarily the right approach for everyone, but I have found it to be most compatible with my way of receiving and processing the information received.

Meditation

The pathway to good INTENTion is paved by Meditation”

Meditation is a primary and essential part of magickal work. Training oneself to sit quietly, observe their thoughts or listen for inner guidance is a discipline that will spill over into your mundane as well as spiritual life. Meditation teaches you to relax and quiet your physical being as you still your mind. Setting aside time on a daily basis to engage in this discipline also teaches you how to focus and either expand or narrow your perception. These are the skills needed as we work magick, and in ritual to keep us anchored in the work in which we are engaging. The process of meditation is the creation of a firm base of self-awareness, heightened experience and union with the Higher Self and the Divine.

For some, the stillness is perceived as boredom and feeling as though there is not enough “active” process. This can be overcome by using different foci in your meditations.

This is best done as part of the meditation itself and immediately following your contemplative session. This record can prove to be quite useful as you make progress in all the varied aspects of your magickal training. And, in accord with the act of meditation, the impressions you record are often infused with greater clarity as you still the mind to outside distraction and open to a limitless source of serenity within.

The Question?

Opening yourself energetically to receive the information is more easily accomplished if you have sorted out beforehand and started the process of narrowing the focus towards what it is you wish to know. Formulating questions and queries that have fewer ambiguities in answer can pull out exactly what is needed to inform the final decision. A question such as “Will I be happy?” can have multiple outcomes and relate to multiple experiences and levels of daily life. Changing it to “Will I be happy working within the job I have been offered?” gives more information to draw upon and therefore more option at an answer that is relevant to that particular situation

Take a look below at some good starter questions that can be easily adapted to fit the specifics of your situation.

Be as specific as possible about what information you are seeking.
• Please give me insight into ….. (be precise)
• How can I move forward?
• What lies behind this situation?
• What can I learn from this?
• How is the past affecting the present?
• Please clarify this situation for me. (set out the situation first)
• Please show me how to resolve this situation. What is needed to heal this situation? Please reveal what is hidden from me in this situation.
• Please give me guidance as to whether I should .. (be precise)
• What would be a good course of action for me?
• What would be the result of this action? (specify action)
• What would be the result of embarking on this relationship?

Meditation
Visualization Practice

This visualization exercise incorporates several disciplines and can be used a variety of ways to enhance your workings. Memory and observation play a large role in all magickal work. We draw continually from our subconscious experiences to inform and enhance our work. This store house holds everything we have encountered as we move through the world. Honing your skills of observation, being able to transfer those things observed into visual images on our inner screen and retaining those impressions within our sub conscious mind trains us to exercise and strengthen our working base.

In spell work, being able to clearly and concretely visualize the outcome provides to the universal flow of energy what specifically is desired. That image may then be used as the basis of a manifest form or a blue print, if you will. In the art of divination, being able to draw upon the memories stored and experiences seen, enables us to make a more informed interpretation of the information that is being received. Additionally, if divining for yourself, these added layers of resource push to the surface which treasures have been excavated for a closer look as the more relevant answers are revealed.

To begin:

• Ready yourself by taking some restorative calming breaths and setting the intention of being open to what is received.

• Set a timer and spend at least 20 minutes looking at the picture above. Do not write anything down; but, do make mental note of the things that initially draw your attention.

• Make note of as much  as you can about the details of each singular item that draws your attention. These would include; color, shape, size, number of those objects in repetition, etc.. Once you have fully scanned one object, move your vision out to include additional objects and more of the picture in the lens of focus.

• Now, make note of how these objects fit together in the picture. The colors that are compatible or dissonant; the moods evoked; their placement in relation to one another, etc.. Extract as much information as you can, allowing it to fill your mind’s eye.

• When the timer rings, close your eyes and then recreate as much of the scene or portion of the picture that has been in your focus. Bring as much into that inner picture as you can. Color, shapes, form, number of objects, their relationship, etc… Just relax and allow the image to build; do not force it.

• When you feel you have as complete a picture as you can create at this time, open your eyes and look once again at the original picture.

• In your journal, write down those things you were able to re-create and write down those things that you missed or gave different attribution to.

Do this exercise until you can recreate most of the picture in your mind. It is okay to work on pieces of it; it is after all a very large and densely filled picture. But part of the process is also learning to train yourself to focus in and out like the lens of a camera. There will always be certain objects whose energies immediately draw your attention. Go with those first and then train yourself to expand your vision from there. If the point of interest is large, train yourself to focus in towards a smaller piece. To bring into focus the detail that might otherwise be over looked. There will be times in your work when you will need to have this ability to zero in on what needs minute attention or to be able to see all that is in your periphery to accomplish the task at hand.

Be sure to record your experiences in your Book of Shadows.

sc-rying-bowl
Practicum: Scrying Practice

These past months you have finely tuned your breath practice and should be able to control your breath in preparation for the work at hand. Begin your practice sessions by taking several calming breaths and opening your self to receive the information you are seeking.

This foundational exercise is going to develop your abilities to scry into water. The reflective surface of water moves in a way that is not distracting versus that of a scrying mirror. Because the surface is so reflective of the iteration of your facial image, this can sometimes detract from the ability to soften your gaze and allow the secondary images to form. More importantly, this is an excellent way to begin training yourself to relax, be open and receptive and does not require anything that you already do not have.

Water Scrying

Begin by establishing a calm breathing pattern. Sitting in a place where you will not be disturbed, begin to focus your intent on formulating the question you wish to have more information about. You will need:

  • A wide bowl (approx. 7-9″ diameter across)- preferably dark in color or you may use a clear glass bowl with a dark black cloth underneath and surrounding it. You may also color the water if you have food coloring. The object is to create a dark reflective surface to gaze into.
  • Water
  • 2/ Candles in holders
  • Mood setters (optional): incense and or soft, relaxing instrumental music

Place the bowl on a surface that will allow you to sit comfortably as you gaze downward in to the bowl. Place the candles on either side of the bowl: 6-12″ away from the edge of the bowl. Experiment with how far away they should be to allow a gentle light source but so as not to be seen reflected in the water. NOTE: Be sure that the candle flames are not near your hair or any flammable headwear!!!

As you gaze into the surface, allow your mind to relax in the train of random thoughts, soften your gaze and allow whatever wishes to present to take form on the surface of the water. You may see shapes, forms, patterns or colors.

It takes practice, so don’t be disappointed if you do not get the theatrical results you may be anticipating. Everyone has the capability to vision, but often this skill is made all the more difficult to retrieve if you are anxious about having a specific type of experience.

Continue in this relaxed open state for no -longer than 20-30 minutes, initially. Be sure to record any impressions you may receive. What may not seem significant at the time, can often, given a second look provide just the key that is needed to unlock the greater answer.

Write Your Own Spell

Now it’s time to write your own spell.Review the post: The Basics of Spell Casting. Before you gather your supplies, sit quietly and reflect on what you will to attract to yourself.  Begin to write out what what this thing is.  Don’t censer or try to structure what you are writing; just let it flow.  Now go back and add the structure as you refine.

When you have tweaked what has been written, gather the supplies that you feel would be appropriate and in support of what you want to set into motion. Be sure to put the finished piece in your book of shadows. Remember, the more you put of yourself and your energy into the spell the more successful you will be.

As the witch’s pouch
Is held tight.

The cauldron is filled
With water and moonlight.

Gaze up towards Lady Moon
And call forth your desire.

The herbs in the bag of art
Throw now into the heat
Of the blazing fire.

As we continue with our studies of those still waters that hold much in their reflective surface the art and practice of Divination and Low Magick ( or Spell Casting) calls to us. Words of power, allies of plant and resin and carefully planned timing, all hold the keys to aiding the process towards successful outcome.

This month we will explore the tools and methods of gaining information through divinatory techniques and calling to ourselves those things which we desire, wish for or hope to manifest in our lives through the crafting of spells.

Foundations of Practice
The Foundations page this month offers up opportunity to investigate and try out some of the divination techniques we have learned about. The meditative focus will center on honing the tools needed for successful spell work and pointing the lens of inner sight towards what we wish to bring into manifest form. And, you will be adding to your own BOS, a specific spell of your own creation.

Reading and Resources:
Be sure to check out the Reading section this month for additions that go into more depth about the varied techniques of Divination and suggestions for creating your own spells.

Solar Cycles

big-orange-sun-4

The Sun’s movements can be seen in all of its glory as we move through the day. We begin our day with the rising of the Sun at dawn; stand in the full light overhead in the peak of the Sun’s power at Noon, and settle in to the winding down of the day’s activities during the lessening of this profound Light of the Sun as we move towards Dusk and the darkness of night.

The energies of the Sun are also further accentuated by the occurrence of the Solstices and the Equinoxes.  The Dark or Waning half of the Witch’s year occurs from the time of the Summer Solstice (longest day) until the Winter Solstice (longest night). And, the Light or Waxing time of the year flows from the Winter Solstice to the Summer Solstice.  The Equinoxes mark the times of between where both day and night are of equal length.

So, we feel the power of the Sun’s energy upon us both daily and throughout the year. If we also take into account the magickal, spiritual and metaphysical attributes that we associate with solar energy, we see that this flaming star that stands at the center of our Solar System is all pervasive in our daily experience.

The Solar Energetic:

The Sun is connected to the chakra (energetic center) which is located centrally within our subtle bodies – the solar plexus. It is from this point that we generate and release energy. It is from this central location that we most often feel the beginning stirrings of the rise of the inner flame of energy. This is the place of energetic awakening and return. You could envision the space of the solar plexus much like the vision of our physical Sun and as being the sustainer (of aroused energy), the life and light bearer (energy produces light and a new state of being). This is our inner forge that warms (energy produces heat) and promotes growth (energy moves us from one state of being to an expanded and enhanced state of awareness).

The Subtleties of Physical Connection:

Awareness of and connecting with those daily cycles of the physical Sun provides us with opportunity to finely tune our own enlivened or solar state of being. We rise in the morning- renewed from an evening’s rest. We welcome the experience of Dawn and the promise of new beginnings into our being; readied for work or action within the day’s activities.

dawn

The heat of the noon day – the time of the sun at its peak finds us fully energized, having completed half of our day’s tasks and fueled and ready to complete what lay ahead. Lunch and the food that has grown from the efforts of sunlight nourishes our bodies and a brief hiatus outside allows for taking that sun’s energy into cells and mind.

And, as the last rays of Sun’s orb fill the sky, we are now ready to rest, relax and review the accomplishments of the day. Night slowly descends as the Sun sets (its rays the gift of dawn on the other side of the world). We are content with bodies recharged and ready to embrace the healing temple of sleep.

Tapping into the Sun’s energies in this way opens the magnetism that allows for freely flowing energy between you and the sustainer of our planet. Moving in accord with the cycles of the sun allow those cycles that are solar in nature to move freely within our being. We move through our day as radiant, reflective beings that are enlivened energized and fully attuned to the mysteries of the cosmos.

Solar and Lunar Deities

how-to-draw-a-celestial-sun-and-moon

Although, commonly the solar aspect is thought to be Male and the Lunar aspect is thought to be Female, in respect to the true polarized nature of each, Solar Goddesses and Lunar Gods can be found throughout many cultures.

Solar Deities

Every culture has at one time held the Sun personified as a Deity of supreme and immense power. Each carries different names, but the central theme running through all is that of bearing the Light each day that was required for survival. How the Sun moved across the sky was often part of the mystical nature of the Supreme Deity, and just as the Sun rose at dawn, reached it’s peak at noon and began its decline as night fell, so did the persona of the Deity change to replicate those changes. This was particularly evident in Ancient Egypt.

In the Ancient Egyptian cycle of the sun, RA is the supreme Deity associated with the Sun. The solar cycle of RA began as the Sun rose at Dawn and was known as Khepra-RA- the dung beetle.Khepri RA

Each morning, having spent the night in the Underworld, Khepra was reborn and mounted the Solar Barque to commenced the crossing of the Sun across the sky as daily routine dictated.

At noon, Khepra-RA transforms into Amun –RA, the Deity now in his full power and glory. The world alight and ablaze with his brilliance.

And, finally at Dusk, RA assumes the persona of Atum-RA. He is now the ancient of ancient carrying the wisdom of all Life within his body. Each evening the weakening sun would enter the Underworld and face multiple challenges as he battled towards rebirth and restoration the following day- reborn again as Khepra. And, thus the cycle began again.

Another key component to this daily solar rite was the necessity for this cycle to continue as this was also the task of RA to collect the deceased King of Egypt as he made his transition through the underworld at the time of his death. If the King successfully met each of the challenges presented him throughout the hours of night, he was carried across the sky withRA that next morning, resurrected as a Deity himself.

The concept of a Solar Barque, the sun as traversing the sky in a boat, is found in the later myths of ancient Egypt, with Ra and Horus. Earlier Egyptian myths imply that the sun is within the lioness, Sekhmet, at night and can be seen reflected in her eyes or that it is within the cow, Hathor during the night, being reborn each morning as her son (the bull). Proto-Indo-European religion has a solar chariot and the mythos of the sun traversing the sky in a chariot.

news.nationalgeographicThe importance of solar worship came to its peak in the City of On or Heliopolis, (Greek: “City of the Sun” or “City of Helios”) which was one of the oldest cities of ancient Egypt. It was located in the apex of the Nile Delta, and was the capital of the 13th Lower Egyptian nome.

His chariot was drawn by winged horses. HIs home was a golden palace at the eastern ends of the earth in the River Okeanos. At dawn he emerged from the East guiding his steeds across the sky and at sunset he descended into the West. Carried within a Golden Cup he moved through the Northern streams and was brought back to his palace in the East. The cycle began anew each day.

The Solar Deities of the Celts and the Norse fill the Myths and stories that form the basis of many of the Wiccan  Sabbats of the Great Wheel.  Within our coven, Brighid of the Triple Flame is the Goddess invoked at Imbolc.brighid

lugh2Lugh is the God that is invoked at Lughnasaad. Both deities offer the energy of transformation, healing and forging a way of newness and clarity by flame and brilliance of solar light.

And in Norse Mythos, the Solar God Freyr is the god of sun and rain, and theFreyr_by_Johannes_Gehrts-224x300 patron of bountiful harvests, sexual and ecological fertility and general health and abundance. Here we see the Solar cycle expressed as the products of alliance with the energies of the Sun and its life-giving properties. Abundance in crops, health and fertility of physical form and control over the rains that feed what the sun enlivens are key points.

 Lunar Deities

imgresVirtually every culture has at some time included Deities that were likened to the energies of the Moon. Around these deities grew many tales of their gifts and either benevolence or rage. Although the most widely known are female, many had male deities. In Egypt, Khonsu, son of Amun and Mut was god of lunar energies and time. His name means “traveller” and he is associated with the God, Toth as also being a marker of time.

7826360_f520In Hindu mythology Chandra rode his chariot (the Moon) across the night sky drawn by 10 horses. He was also the God of vegetation, which makes sense in terms of the seasonal cycles of planting and the moon tides of agriculture. Chandra is also considered the lunar polarity opposite Surya (the solar) in kundalini yoga.

“Selene /Luna. These are the names of the Moon Goddess in Greek and Roman mythology respectively. In the myths associated with these goddesses, the goddess is paired with the god of the sun. He travels throughout the day and she takes over the journey at night. She is typically considered to be a passionate goddess who takes many lovers and who represents the desire associated with the moon.

The Mayan people have several stories about different moon goddesses. One goddess frequently associated with the moon is Ixchel who is associated with the moon because she is a fertility goddess. However, it is believed that she may actually be the “grandmother of the moon” and represent aging and the drying up of fertility in old age so she is most commonly linked with the waxing of the moon and not the moon at all times.” An aspect of her fertility is attributed to her role as Mother to four sons born to a Sun God.  Each of the sons corresponds to the four cardinal directions; holding up the heavens a pillar for each.
