The Charge of the God

Listen now to the words of the Great Father, who of old was called Osiris, Adonis, Zeus,Thor, Pan, Cernunnos, Herne, Lugh and by many other names:

My Law is Harmony with all things. Mine is the secret that opens the gates of life and mine is the dish of salt of the earth that is the body of Cernunnos that is the eternal circle of rebirth. I give knowledge of life everlasting, and beyond death I give the promise of regeneration and renewal. I am the sacrifice, and my protection blankets the earth.

Hear the words of the Dancing God, the music of whose laughter stirs the winds, whose voice calls the seasons:

I who am the Lord of the Hunt, and the Power of Light, sun among the clouds and the secret of the flame, I call upon your bodies to arise and come unto me. For I am the flesh of the earth and all its beings.Through me all things must die and with me are reborn. Let my worship be in the body that sings, for behold, all acts of willing sacrifice are my rituals. Let there be desire and fear, anger and weakness, joy and peace, awe and longing within you. For these too are part of the mysteries found within yourself, within me, all beginnings have endings, and all endings have beginnings.

 The Gift of the Sun

We have learned that the intuitive and healing qualities of the Moon is the natural attribution of the Goddess and so,the Sun is the representation of the strength of will often associated with the God. This is not to say that these archetypal energies are not found in the Deity of opposite gender; this is simply the general assignation used initially. The Charge of the God is a devotional that may be used during solar rites or as a daily devotional to the Gods and like its companion The Charge of the Goddess adds the power of calling into presence these specialized energies and bringing them into sacred space. The Charge is often used during the invocation to the God at a Sabbat and the Sabbats and workings that are done during those celebrations are generally categorized as Rites of Solar Magick.

When we choose to work with the energy of the planets, the Sun is a most powerful ally in that work. Rites that are specific to strengthening and empowering, the Fire Festivals of the Sabbats and Rites of Transformation are typical focuses when working with the energies of the Sun. A rite held on a SUN-day would correspond with the energy of the Sun. Astrologically, the month that holds the sign of Leo would also be a potent time to connect with the solar energies as the ruling planet of Leo is the Sun.

The Solar Eclipse

If during the workings of an Esbat a Solar Eclipse occurs there is added opportunity to enhance and uphold the working with the combined energies of Sun and Moon.

T99seq1x

1999 Total Solar Eclipse Sequence
This sequence encompasses the entire eclipse from start to finish.

For An Excellent Explanation of the Science behind an Eclipse please check out this link:     Mr. Eclipse

In Magickal working, a solar eclipse allows for the focus of energy at a point where time seems to pause for a moment; opening the potential for closer scrutiny.

“When a solar eclipse occurs, the Moon is passing between the Earth and the Sun, creating a New Moon as happens every month, but in this case – the alignment is perfect, the occultation of the Sun by our Moon is complete. In a total Solar Eclipse, the intensity of the New Moon is strong because she is so near to the earth, and also because for those amazing few minutes the power of the Sun is bursting out behind her. The luminaries share space in the same Astrological Sign – and there is great power within the energy of that sign.”

 Liber Resh vel Helios

In our discussion of Lunar Magick I offered an alternative adoration entitled the Liber vel Hecate for your exploration and use. The Liber Resh vel Helios is a standard daily devotional within Thelemic practice….

“ Liber Resh vel Helios, by Aleister Crowley, comprises four daily adorations to the Sun, to be performed at dawn, noon, sunset, and midnight. The general object is to focus the conscious mind on the center of our solar system” … The Thelemapedia Encyclopedia.

Although the Liber Resh is more closely associated with the Aleister Crowley and Thelemite practice of Magick, it serves as example of how one could construct a series of adorations or devotionals that follow closely the cycle of the Sun through the day. The God Forms used are Egyptian, but crafting your own and using those God Forms that align with the Pantheon to which you have found the greatest affinity would make this exercise more personal in nature.

A word of note, however. Do not simply use your God’s name in place of the one used in the Liber and keep the rest of the adoration as is. This would create a working that would be not useful and energetically would not be compatible with the intent. Those attributions and adorations stated are specific to the Egyptian God for whom they were offered. So, with that in mind, you should create your own that contains the specific attributes and gifts of the Solar God you have chosen. Likewise, do not mix pantheons. The energies of each are very different and for this specific type of devotional work, you want the words of power to be concise, appropriate and meaningful within the container of the general energies of a particular pantheon and its history.

Liber Resh vel Helios

MCE_Sunburst_Theme
Although the Liber Resh vel Helios is not a traditional form of invocation used in Wiccan practice there is much that can be derived of the nature of the Solar energy in its study.

Let him greet the Sun at dawn, facing East, giving the sign of his grade. And let him say in a loud voice:

Hail unto Thee who art Ra in Thy rising, even unto Thee who art Ra in Thy strength,
who travellest over the Heavens in Thy bark at the Uprising of the Sun.
Tahuti standeth in His splendour at the prow, and Ra-Hoor abideth at the helm.
Hail unto Thee from the Abodes of Night!

Also at Noon, let him greet the Sun, facing South, giving the sign of his grade. And let him say in a loud voice:

Hail unto Thee who art Ahathoor in Thy triumphing, even unto Thee who art Ahathoor in Thy beauty, who travellest over the heavens in thy bark at the Mid-course of the Sun.
Tahuti standeth in His splendour at the prow, and Ra-Hoor abideth at the helm.
Hail unto Thee from the Abodes of Morning!

Also, at Sunset, let him greet the Sun, facing West, giving the sign of his grade. And let him say in a loud voice:

Hail unto Thee who art Tum in Thy setting, even unto Thee who art Tum in Thy joy,
who travellest over the Heavens in Thy bark at the Down-going of the Sun.
Tahuti standeth in His splendour at the prow, and Ra-Hoor abideth at the helm.
Hail unto Thee from the Abodes of Day!

Lastly, at Midnight, let him greet the Sun, facing North, giving the sign of his grade, and let him say in a loud voice:

Hail unto thee who art Khephra in Thy hiding, even unto Thee who art Khephra in Thy silence, who travellest over the heavens in Thy bark at the Midnight Hour of the Sun.
Tahuti standeth in His splendour at the prow, and Ra-Hoor abideth at the helm.
Hail unto Thee from the Abodes of Evening.

And after each of these invocations thou shalt give the sign of silence, and afterward thou shalt perform the adoration that is taught thee by thy Superior. And then do thou compose Thyself to holy meditation.

Also it is better if in these adorations thou assume the God-form of Whom thou adorest,as if thou didst unite with Him in the adoration of That which is beyond Him.

Thus shalt thou ever be mindful of the Great Work which thou hast undertaken to perform, and thus shalt thou be strengthened to pursue it unto the attainment of the Stone of the Wise, the Summum Bonum, True Wisdom and Perfect Happiness.

Bonus: A Chart of the Modalities

Keywords and Energies of the Signs of the Zodiac

astrology-wheel

 The Cardinal  Signs

Aries – Cancer – Libra – Capricorn

Aries

aries-ram-wh

The energy of Aries is that of Fire or action.
The First sign  of the Zodiac, Aries brings an inquisitive nature and youthful energy to the workings. Fire is the place of action and Will and within the energies of Aries, it is the first sparks of flame that are not quite at their fullest, but hold the potential, if directed and guided well to fuel the larger blaze.  Workings that are first steps towards a project and those requiring an energetic and fresh approach are best suited to this sign’s energies. The Power of Exploration, Enthusiasm and Fresh Approach

Cancer

cancer-crab-wh

The energy of Cancer is that of Water  or emotion.
The sign of Cancer is a water sign that is ruled by the planetary energy of the Moon. All things of ebb and flow and those things that are responsive to this type of activity fall under this sign of the zodiac. Because it’s natural ruler is the Moon, when the moon’s phase is in the sign of  Cancer, emotion will run high, the floodgates of intuition will be accessible and opportunities to connect at a deeper level to whatever working is done will be provided.  Workings relating to home life and those we hold close are also well suited to this time. The Power of Intuition, Resourcefulness and Imagination

Libra

libra-scales-wh

The energy of Libra  is that of Air  or intellect.
Libra is an Air sign. The mind and intellect hold full sway here. And, being a cardinal sign, new ideas and ways of mentally approaching a matter are in keeping. Libra is the place of balance and weighing the pros and cons of a situation. This is all taken from the perspective of intellectualizing and finding a logical solution that is cooperative and harmonious as well as “appealing”. Beauty is a key component here. Not just in the mundane sense but also the quality of beauty that occurs when everything is working as it should in a way that makes sense.  Workings to establish or reestablish the seeds of harmonious outcome, through the process of logic and reason are well done under the Libran influence. The Power of Balance, Harmony and Teamwork

Capricorn

capricorn-goat-wh

The energy of Capricorn is that of Earth or strength and foundation.
Capricorn is the sign of the sea-goat; equally at home in the depths as well as able to deftly and precisely scale the steepest cliff.  There is a sense of achievement and often the foundation of earth (physical and in the sense of grounding and the manifest) will be the anchor and pivotal point around which all striving and ambition will be pursued. Limitations are acknowledged, which makes for smooth and safe transition upwards and boundaries that are created as a result of those limitations offer the stable base to reach beyond what inertia would hold you from. Workings in this sign can be prone to excess and creating unnecessary challenge. Be sure to assess first what is the desired outcome as the results will be enduring and lasting. Organize  and plan well before undertaking. The Power of Discipline, Integrity and Goals

The Fixed  Signs

Taurus – Leo – Scorpio – Aquarius

Taurus

taurus-bull-wh

The energy of Taurus is that of Earth or strength and foundation.
Taurus brings to any working strength, determination and an often immovable quality which can be used effectively if this fixed nature is not of a stagnant pose.  This pause allows for assessment of what lays ahead, just as the bull assesses his next move when provoked or thought to be in danger.  Business affairs and decision making are naturally enhanced by this sign and the predisposition towards grounded and well rooted directions lend support.  Goal-making is a suitable working under the Taurus influence. The Power of Determination, Assessment and Goals

Leo

leo-lion-wh

The energy of Leo is that of Fire or action.
The sign of Leo is a fire  sign that is ruled by the planetary energy of the Sun. This is the solar power of kingship, authority and strength that magnetically draws to itself a fire of the will.  Workings that align with a Leo Moon bring the qualities of solar and lunar together in an atomic like fusion. Those areas which need strengthening and are ready to be brought to a place of intense action and will are fired up under this sign. Because of the fixed nature of Leo any working begun at the New Moon will have a solid stability that may not move forward as expected if caught in the rigid stance of immovable action. In this way the energy can be directed towards those things which need the confidence and bolster of leadership. The Power of Generosity, Spontaneity, and Leadership

Scorpio

scorpio-scorpion-wh

The energy of Scorpio is that of Water  or emotion.
Although Scorpio is a water sign; there is an underlying nature of fire held within the scorpion influence. This is the sign of ultimate and permanent transformation.  Workings that require a release and retuning of energy are enhanced by the energy of Scorpio.  But, beware. Scorpio is also the master of pulling up to the surface those things that lay buried deep within, even if you are not ready for them to be exposed.  The resulting benefit can be that of the Phoenix transformed and renewed if you allow Scorpio to do its work. The Power of Release, Renewal and Transformation

Aquarius

aquarius-waterbearer-wh

The energy of Aquarius  is that of Air  or intellect.
Aquarius is a sign of vision and the ability to see far and wide. Innovation and invention are keywords here and endeavors that are humanitarian in nature and to the benefit of all are well worked under this sign.  There is a dynamism about Aquarius that also lens itself to being very charming, charismatic and able to draw the right resources into play. Workings that relate to future experience and an opening of innovative methods fueled by a lightening quick mind are enhanced under an Aquarian moon. The Power of Humanitarian Vision, Innovation and Focus

The Mutable  Signs

Gemini – Virgo  – Sagittarius – Pisces

Gemini

gemini-twins-wh

The energy of Gemini is that of Air or intellect.
Gemini brings to any working the ability to move quickly and adeptly through the situation. This can also be its downfall, as often the details are overlooked. Communication in all forms is particularly heightened; but again with Gemini’s nature of duality, intentions should be clearly stated to ovoid miscommunication. Mental process is the driving component with the Gemini energy so be sure to include some very concrete and grounded action and foundations when planning workings with this moon’s energy. The Power of Duality, Communication and Adaptability

Virgo

virgo-virgin-wh

The energy of Virgo is that of Earth or strength and foundation.
The sign of Virgo is an earth lending strength and concrete energy that will serve to solidify whatever its energy is acting upon. There is a sense of attention to detail and careful analysis of whatever is undertaken.  Virgo breaks it down to a place of greater understanding and then reforms and re-masters it towards a useable form.  Because it is also a mutable sign, the information gathering nature of Virgo is adaptable in its approach, but can at times back itself into a corner  that is overly detailed in nature and slow to act upon. The Power of Adaptability, Analysis and Re-formation

Sagittarius

sagittarius-archer-wh

The energy of Sagittarius is that of Fire or action.
Sagittarius not only walks the path but blazes the trail and lights the way as it moves through new experiences. It is the fire that sends its sparks out in many directions with the aspirations that one or two will energize take root and become the bonfires that quicken and transform. Workings that are  done under the influence of its energy have the added benefit of Jupiter’s expansive nature. What is set into motion will travel, far, fast and wide. If enough sparks are set out something will surely catch the fire of enthusiasm. Workings to set in motion job searches or varied options of course are well suited to the Sagittarian energy. There will also be most likely many returns, so anticipate the need to sort through and narrow down to the ones that are best suited towards stoking the fires of action. The Power of Exploration, Initialization and Disbursement.

   Pisces

pisces-fish-wh

The energy of Pisces is that of Water  or emotion.
Pisces is the sign of compassion and feeling expressed through self-sacrifice and deep emotional connection to all things. The watery and emotional nature of this sign can make it hard to bring logic and reason into the equation, but workings down under the influence of this energy will have a naturally intuitive flow and quality of movement.  At times the messages received may be murky and laden with unnecessary consideration for the outcome, but the feeling nature is one of leading with the heart felt desires and gifts vs. analysis and mind. Being the last of the signs of the Zodiac before return to the initializing energies of Aries, the energy of Pisces is one that has, out of the need for survival adopted fluidity as its main course. With this in mind, workings done within this energy can be hard to solidify; but if you draw on the underlying emotional components, the heart will lead and these underlying feelings will be surfaced to be examined and used in a productive way.The Power of Compassion, Intuition and Sacrifice

Basic Astrology and Lunar Magick

dreamstime_9636735

So What’s Astrology Got To Do With It?

One of the important considerations when doing lunar magick is maximizing the effects of the working through use of the most beneficial astrological sign that your Full or New Moon is transiting through. Each of the astrological signs is identified by two basic qualities: the element (Earth, Air, Fire or Water) to which it resonates and the quality of that particular element (Cardinal, Fixed or Mutable) called the Modalities.

Below is a basic table that outlines the basic qualities of the astrological signs:

Sign Element Sign Element
Aries Fire Libra Air
Taurus Earth Scorpio Water
Gemini Air Sagittarius Fire
Cancer Water Capricorn Earth
Leo Fire Aquarius Air
Virgo Earth Pisces Water

The Elements of the Astrological Signs

One way to approach deciding what the components of a working should include is to be sure to select something that aligns with each of the four basic elements. We work so closely with the elements in Wiccan practice that this is yet another way to integrate those energies into our magickal and mundane worlds.

Keywords: The Elements

Earth=Manifestation/Physical Plane

Air=Mind/Thought/Intellect

Fire=Will/Action/Transformation

Water=Emotions/Intuition/Healing

Keywords:   The Modalities

Cardinal=Becoming/Initiating

Fixed=Stable/Solid

Mutable=Flexible/Flowing

As you can surmise…

It All Comes Together with Past Lessons and Teachings:

You can use these as a guideline for planning what workings would be supportive of the element of the astrological sign the moon is in.

EAST – Mind

Those practices that utilize your intelligence, that move to inspire and make use of air.

Reading and Breath Work

SOUTH – Will/Action

Those practices that fiery up your passions, make you move and stimulate you to take action  and make use of fire.

Exercise, Dancing and Creating

WEST – Emotional/Intuitive

Those practices that utilize your feeling nature, that open the intuitive nature and make use of water.

Journaling and Divination

NORTH – Physical

Those practices that utilize your physical energy, that make you move and make use of manifest reality.

Movement, Drumming and Hand Crafts

The list is endless and the combinations of work are only limited by your own creativity. Review the lessons about the elements and their energies. Remain open to the many possibilities and allow your inner guidance to direct you towards a practice that will be reflective and in resonance with your magickal self.

The Modalities of the Astrological Signs

The Modalities of Cardinal, Fixed and Mutable map closely in their dynamics to that of the waxing, peak and waning of the moon. The Cardinal qualities are those of initiating whatever they are exerting their energy upon. The Fixed signs are stable and the product of the initial burst of movement to a place of permanence and center point.  And, the Mutable signs are those that are flexible in nature. Their movement is that of having come from a stable center point to a place of stretching towards endings, completion and anticipation of the next phase of new catalytic action.

Below is a basic table that outlines the modalities of the astrological signs:

Sign Quality Sign Quality
Aries Cardinal Libra Cardinal
Taurus Fixed Scorpio Fixed
Gemini Mutable Sagittarius Mutable
Cancer Cardinal Capricorn Cardinal
Leo Fixed Aquarius Fixed
Virgo Mutable Pisces Mutable

The Cardinal Signs

Aries – Cancer – Libra – Capricorn

The Cardinal signs of the Zodiac offer an energy that is initiating and growing in nature. This is the initial thrust of energy that moves  in accord with the bursting forth of the energies that surround. We see this in the inquisitive nature of Aries, the healing intuitive nature of Cancer, the equalizing balance of Libra and the solid expansive range of Capricorn. Cardinal signs are those best used when you want an added boost to kick-start your endeavor, a fresh perspective and energy to put into motion your hopes, desires and dreams.

The Fixed Signs

Taurus – Leo – Scorpio and Aquarius

The Fixed signs of the Zodiac offer an energy that is strong, reinforcing and consistent in nature. This energy forms the container that stabilizes the initial outpour of the Cardinal signs. It coalesces and brings this burst of energetic force into a state of form and cohesion. Permanence and resilience are native to this modality with the ability to transform and remake into something innovative and different. We see this in the steadfast nature of Taurus, the fierce protective nature of Leo, the transformative powers of Scorpio and the far reaching vision of Aquarius. Fixed signs are those best used when you want to strengthen and transform your workings seeing far into the future.

** It is worth noting that the Four Fixed Signs of the Zodiac are the astrological attributes of the Four Holy Creatures.

Taurus is the winged Bull- earth

Scorpio is the Eagle – Water

Leo is the Winged Lion – Fire

Aquarius is the Winged Man- Air

The addition of wings to these creatures represents the elements of nature and man in their highest form and the aspirations and achievement of spiritual purpose having transcended the lower planes.

The Mutable Signs

Gemini – Virgo  – Sagittarius – Pisces

The Mutable signs of the Zodiac offer an energy that is fluid and adaptable in nature.  Unlike the initial thrust of the Cardinal signs and the solid stance of the Fixed signs, those of the mutable energy move in accord with the ebb and flow of the energies that surround. We see this in the quicksilver duality of Gemini, the analytical nature of Virgo, the exploratory sparks of Sagittarius and the fluid emotions of Pisces. Mutable signs are those best used when you wish a certain amount of flexibility in outcome, with room to rethink, remold and reinvent.

How does this apply in planning a Lunar working?

imgres

Timing:

The Moon is New in Capricorn.  So how can you use the energy of this New Moon (New Moon= new beginnings- starting projects, goals, planting, seeding, etc…) in the Cardinal (becoming/initiating) Earthy (manifest/physical foundation) sign of Capricorn.

The New Moon in Capricorn is a good time to start that project which has been on your mind for sometime now, but procrastination has won out.  Diligence and hard work will bring the necessary steps towards scaling those high ambitions for manifest and material return.  Capricorn energy is the foundation of earthly delights having been attempted from all possible angles until just the right place of passage is found. Because it is a cardinal sign there is potential for tangible results, but the energy is often slow to start and sheer determination is what will win out.

So, with all this enhanced energy in earthy Capricorn- the sea goat- set your sights on the highest peak of the mountain, but first stabilize and anchor yourself in the foundation of digging deep into your watery, emotional roots and then set foot on the path, sure, steady and strong.

For more ways to use Astrological timing, look at the posts in The Temple of Cosmic Spheres Blog.

Lunar Magick

Moon wonder child

The Moon rides high in the sky as Her light floods down bathing me in her embrace. I stand in the cold, cloak wrapped around my body with feet planted firmly on Earth. I breathe in deeply taking in the energy of the air around me and lifting arms, fingers stretching up to hold the orb of milky whiteness, I begin my devotional esbat in honor of the Star Goddess and call to Her with words of invocation….

Charge of the Star Goddess

Listen to the words of the Great Mother, she who of old has been called Artemis,
Astarte, Dione, Melusine, Cerridwen, Diana and by many other names:
“Whenever you have need of anything, once in the month, and better it be when
the moon is full, then shall ye assemble in some secret place to adore the spirit of Me,
who am Queen of all the Wise. You shall be free from slavery, and as a sign that
ye be free, you shall sing, dance, feast, make music and love, all in My praise.
For Mine is the ecstasy of the spirit, but Mine also is joy on Earth.
My law is love unto all beings. Mine is the secret door that opens
upon the land of youth, and Mine is the cup of the wine of life,
that is the Cauldron of Cerridwen, that is the Holy Grail of Immortality.
I give the knowledge of the spirit eternal, and beyond death, I give peace,
freedom and reunion with those who have gone before.
Nor do I demand aught in sacrifice, for behold, I am the Mother of all things,
and My love is poured out upon the Earth.”

Hear now the words of the Star Goddess, the dust of whose feet are the hosts of Heaven,
whose body encircles the universe:

“I who am the beauty of the green earth, and the white moon among the stars,
do call upon your souls…arise, and come unto Me.
For I am the soul of nature that gives life to the universe.
From Me all things proceed, and unto Me they must return.
Let My worship be in the heart that rejoiceth, for behold – all acts of love
and pleasure are My rituals. Let there be beauty and strength, power and compassion,
honor and humility, mirth and reverence within you. And you who seek to know Me,
know that thy seeking and yearning will avail thee not, unless thou knowest this mystery:
that if that which you seek you findest not within thee, you will never find it without,
for behold – I have been with thee from the beginning, and I am that which is attained
at the end of desire.”

A Form of Devotional

The Charge of the Goddess is the quintessential devotional offered to the Goddess. The Charge was found in the Gardnerian Book of Shadows and is attributed to Doreen Valiente. Over the years the Charge has been adapted and there are now several versions.

The Charge is often used as the invocation to the Goddess during most Esbat rituals. An Esbat is the time of working Lunar Magick within a ritual setting. It is during these ceremonies and rituals that we seek to connect with the energies of the moon, her phases and the gifts that each brings. These rituals could include:

Rites of Healing
Divination
Rites of New Growth and deeper awareness

Working with the Moon and her phases are part of the Natural cycle that is used in the Craft of the Witch. We draw from the energy of the Goddess as represented in her various forms of Maiden, Mother and Crone and see these in manifest form as New, Full and Dark Moons.

Given all of the diverse energy and mystery surrounding the Moon is it any wonder that its greater mysteries are used to enhance sacred work. Dancing around a fire on a moon lit night, moving to the beat of drums is the nearest one can come to being totally absorbed into the Natural world.

If we also work with the energy of the planets, a rite held on a MON-day would correspond with the energy of the Moon. A moon phase in the sign of Cancer would add additional lunar energy as the astrological sign of Cancer is ruled by the MOON.

Another devotional that could be used in your lunar workings is:

The Liber Vel Hecate

The Liber Vel Hecate was developed based upon the model of the Liber Resh Vel Helios . It comprises the phases of the Moon and the many and varied names and pantheons that honor the Goddess in her power as Queen of the Heavens. This could be used as invocation or devotional during an Esbat.

The Phases of the Moon

space_bc69390a
When planning an Esbat there are several types of information that are taken into consideration to optimize the working that is planned. The first would be to match the energy of the moon phase with the working. If not in a hurry,, the next would be to look at the astrological energies of that specific phase. you will want to decide which Deity you wish to invoke; if not using the traditional Charge of the Goddess. Once you have settled on a date, phase, astrological correspondence etc.- the work begins.

If you have no specific working in mind, celebrating the New, Full or Dark Moons and allowing their general energies to flow through you is a must when walking a Wiccan Path. Attuning to the cycles of the Moon, honors the Goddess in all her forms and the lunar tides that flow within us.

Moon Phase Basics

The Waxing Moon is the time between the New Moon and the Full Moon
The Waning Moon is the time between the Full Moon and the last day of the last quarter- just prior to the New Moon.

Although Magickal working can be done at any time, there are specific times during the lunar cycle when your workings can be enhanced. One of the first considerations is what type of energy you want to use for your intent.

The waxing of the moon, from New to Full, provides a crescendo or building effect and the waning of the moon from peak of Full to the subsequent New Moon allows for release and diminishing of energetic effect.

NEW MOON
The Maiden

The New Moon is a time of beginnings and first seeds towards growth. New projects, goals and behaviors are all supported when given focus during this time.

The New Moon is the beginning of the cycle of increased flow and dynamics. It embodies the Goddess as the Maiden. Full, fertile and ripe with creative outpour and though lacking the experience of the Crone, has more than enough enthusiasm to seek out the many paths that could be taken. It is to some degree the allowance of nature taking its course, directed towards a goal of productive manifestation. It is the yearning and desire that is inherent in the Maiden that will attract to Her that which she desires most. And, it is this energy, which if with intention and correct thought is set into motion during this phase will blossom with the waxing of the Moon.

Magickal workings would include:
∗ Beginnings of any new endeavor
∗ Fresh starts at old projects/pursuits
∗ Dedications to a new pursuit
∗ The first steps towards a specific goal

FULL MOON
The Mother

The Full Moon is the peak and product of all efforts begun at the New Moon. Additionally, any working that needs extra oomph, magnification or energetic boost, will benefit from Full Moon energy.

The Full Moon embodies the energies of the Goddess as the Mother. She is the giver of life and the nurturer and guardian that ensures that that life will be productive, fruitful and at the apex of whatever endeavor is undertaken. The expansive light of the Full Moon shines upon all under its sway and the dynamics of ebb and flow are at their most potent.

It Must Be A Full Moon

We’ve all heard the varied stories of increased aggressive behavior during the time of the full moon. IS it really the moon’s influence or is the expected and pre-determined energy surrounding the potency of the moon’s greater influence that fulfills that expectancy. A scientific take on the phenomenon of the Full Moon and the connection with increased births, violence and general “lunacy” can be found here:

Moon Myths: The Truth About Lunar Effects on You

A Personal Note: Being one who knows and believes in the potency and subtle levels of effect that the natural world has on humanity, my theory is one of both science and myth. I do believe that some individuals are more sensitive to the ebb and flow of energy that surrounds them. So, at the time of the full moon when the pull of magnetism from that celestial source is at its peak, it does not seem so far a stretch to believe that those energies can cause disruption in the regular state of being for those individuals. How that presents itself, whether it be in the form of mood swings, elation, feeling more energized or depleted, depends on the individual and the basis or foundational state from which they started. I also believe that for others it is simply a matter of self-fulfilling prophecy.

The Moon Light Sonata

wolfDMp16_468x672

A beautiful full moon stirs our instinctual animal behavior. The feelings of running wild beneath the primal light of the moon surfaces in everyone’s fantasies or yearnings at least once in a lifetime. Some take up the call and find a primal nature within that lay long buried or was hidden by the conventionality of society’s expectation. It also stirs the passions within. Staring back at your lover with star-filled eyes and other-worldly light reflected on smooth skin ignite the desire to move and merge as one flowing being. Flowing in rhythm with each other just as the tides respond to mother moon’s pull.

With all this diverse energy and mystery surrounding the Moon is it any wonder that its greater mysteries are used to enhance sacred work. Dancing around a fire on a moon lit night, moving to the beat of drums is the nearest one can come to being totally absorbed into the Natural world.

Mother Moon shines down to light the way that all may fall under her seductive spell. And, as energies rise in response to her call time stops, the veils are parted and transformation begins.

Magickal workings would include:
∗ Celebrating the fruition of a goal, desire or working begun at the New Moon
∗ Strengthening a relationship, situation or personal trait that you wish to use productively
∗ Strengthening and Reaffirming of Dedications to The Great Work, a magickal Path, a Deity or spiritual pursuit

DARK MOON
The Crone

The span of time from completion of Full moon, up to and including approximately 3 days prior to the next New Moon is the optimal time for release, cutting away and inner preparation. These 3 days prior to the next New Moon are also known as the Dark Moon phase.

The Dark Moon embodies the Hidden nature, that if embraced in the fullness of the dark reveals what may lay beneath the surface waiting to be used and transformed. This is the Goddess as the Crone. She holds nothing back, invites you to look at the truth of your own reflection and then demands that you release what serves no purpose and what hinders your growth. She carries the wisdom that has grown through experience and she knows the secrets of the darkest of places and holds within the Light that illumines those who have courage to enter.

Using the energy of the Dark Moon is to call upon the reserves of knowing that are contained within what it is you seek to release. This is a time for culling, pruning and preparing for the upcoming New Moon where what is viable may be planted anew, with greater understanding of the process that ensures success.

Magickal workings would include:
∗ Uncovering what holds you back
∗ Releasing a negative habit or energy
∗ Uncovering your shadow nature
∗ Healing and removal of blockages

The Lunar Eclipse

TLE2004seq5x2004 Lunar Eclipse Sequence
The total lunar eclipse of 2004 Oct 28 was widely visible from the USA.
This sequence of images captures the eclipse from start (right) to finish (left)

For An Excellent Explanation of the Science behind an Eclipse please check out the link below:

Mr. Eclipse

“During a lunar eclipse, we experience what might be called a “micro month”. The moon is full, then partially or completely hidden, and then visible again. Within just a few minutes, an energy similar to a complete cycle of full, waning, new/black (if it is a total lunar eclipse), waxing and full again.

In addition to this cyclical energy, we are aware of the Earth’s presence. Her shadow falls across the Moon as she appears between the Moon and the Sun. This adds the unification of earth and lunar energy, reinforcing the sense of wholeness, completion and cycles of a lunar eclipse. Because both the Earth and the Moon are considered “feminine,” it is a good time to focus on the Goddess aspect if you desire.”

In practice, how could I make the most of these phases?

Suppose I want to seek new employment. On the New Moon, I may do a meditation, plan, brainstorm and journal about the type of work I may wish to acquire. I may even, physically plant a few seeds in a pot as concrete visual symbols of my intent. Each day thereafter I will tend the seeds- mentally and/or physically- enriching them with more concrete ideas and goals for obtaining my ideal work. On the Full Moon, I will give thanks for the new growth in my life towards my goal. Perhaps do a meditation, visualizing in as much detail as possible my future work surroundings, myself enjoying and looking forward to each day, etc. And, finally as the moon wanes and the days prior to the next New moon approach, I spend some time identifying and releasing any negative thoughts, words or actions that are preventing me from bringing into manifest reality my goal. This release may take any form as long as the symbolic or actual release is something you can strongly connect with, and is of harm to none. This or a similar cycle may need to be repeated several lunations, depending on your goal, the strength of your focus and intent and ability to truly release that which may be holding you back.

And, If I add the astrological energies as well…

If you elected to start this working with the New Moon of March in Aries (cardinal sign – enhances new starts and beginnings) you would be using zodiacal energies that are in support of new beginnings. Aries is the first sign of the zodiac~ beginnings in the stage of infancy and youth. This would be a good time to allow that “inner child” to imagine all those careers you had previously had aspirations for or those that with the enthusiasm of youth feel are within your grasp. Really brainstorm what feeds your enthusiasm, what fires up your passion. The caution, however is to be sure to have a reality check with the “adult “ you as to what is financially viable and what may be best left to dreams. As the days progress and we begin approach towards the Full Moon – March 29th in Libra- this is the point of taking all those employment choices and weighing them each against the other. Libra is an Air sign so really give some “thought” to what the implications are of each of the choices and what possible outcomes could result in selecting that path. Libra is also a cardinal sign (becoming and initial thrust) so the full potential for crafting a new employment picture is full of good starts. As the lunar month continues and we then move into the waning phase, I am ready to narrow down my choices feeling confident that I’ve maximized my final choices filtered through enthusiasm, passion and level-headed analysis and thought. See how maximizing all the components and energies that you are familiar with can give the added boost that makes for a successful and productive working.

Liber Vel Hecate

imgres-2

Although the Liber Vel Hecate is not a traditional form of invocation used in Wiccan practice there is much that can be derived of the nature of the Lunar Goddesses in its study.

Hail Luna, as you rise, IxChel,
Kia, Lady pale,
Queen of dreams, Cast your spell,
Of triple veil
Ar-iadne, Ar-ianhrod, Ar-achne Moerae,
Hail Hecate
Of faces three,
Shining from afar,
Spider of Destiny
In your web of Silver Stars

WAXING MOON:

Hail Diana, Huntress,
As you draw your silver bow,
Hail Artemis and Io,
Oh Horned waxing luminous present glow
Nu and numinous maiden crescent shewn

Hail Clotho, Spinner of life’s thread
Drawn forth from Nix Night
Turning Fate’s first strands
With nimble hands
Twining twixt the dark and bright

FULL MOON:

Hail Moon Mother,
Full and fecund, round and bright,
Isis, We draw you down from the night,
With your cauldron-womb of luminous white

Hail Lachesis, Weaver, Craft your web
Weave the lines between the times
Of wax and wane; And tides
Of flow and ebb
Gossamer silver cords
Of dreaming draw together
In your matrix matted of matter and ether
DreamMother, give Birth
As your light shines down to Earth

WANING MOON:

Hail, Grandmother Spider,
Crone and crow,
Wisewoman, elder, seer,
Help us face, and destroy our fear

Hail Hecate of the Crossroads,
Oh old and ominous presence glowing
Your waning numinous crescent going

Hail Atropos, Cutter,
With your waning silver scythe,
You cut the thread of Life.

DARK MOON:

There is a fourth face, though unseen
There is a fourth path, whom few know
A fourth Fate, who awaits
In shadow

Hail Kali, Blackness,
From whom the kalas of Time emit
Three Norns converged,
Past, present, future merged,
On the path of Blood beyond the Wheel we surge and scry

To Caer Arianhrod, Castle in the Sky

Hail Nought, Not, Nuit, Maat,
Yours the dark and secret art

While crone’s scythe cuts breath and with death
The thread of life appears to dwindle
From No-thing you craft another mask
And re-splice it back, on another track
To Clotho’s spindle

Overview of the Lesson: 9 – Lunar and Solar Magick

moon

Luna looks down
And the spell is cast
Father Sun heats the intent
And sustains the
Creative flow.
Weave your magick
For you are the child
Of sun and moon
And the heavens await your
hand of creation.

I see the Sun and the Sun sees Me
I see the Moon and the Moon sees Me

We have come now to the place on our Path where the still waters run deep and magick is woven with the threads of intuitive guidance and strength and courage. This is the magick of the Moon and Sun. We work the Esbats to draw on Mother Moon’s healing waters and celebrate the Sabbats of Fire and desire to energize our Will to Action.

This month we will explore those energies that are held within the Natural cycles that surround us. It is they who control and wield their power over all of Life and it is to their embrace that we return each month, each morning and evening to bathe in their sustaining and opening powers.

This month’s lesson will also include a brief introduction to the astrological timing of Lunar workings and a suggestion for daily practice to connect more fully with the solar energies.

Foundations of Practice

The Foundations page this month includes two meditations, each of which are designed to connect you more fully to the moon and the sun. Continue your breath work as this still remains the staple of every magickal endeavor. And, we kick off the year and this lesson with a journaling exercise that will provoke thought on your definition of lunar and solar work.

Reading and Resources:

Be sure to check out the Reading section this month for additions that will offer more insight to your lunar and solar work. There will also been some additions made to the Book of Shadows page.

So, let us begin the work at hand dancing in moonlight’s grace and sun’s molten core….

Luna bright and Sun God’s flame
Fill me with your essence
Cool the waters that
Flow in turbulence
And
Heat the passion that
Spills from mind’s creation.
I move within your cycles
Hear your call
To return
And
Light and darkness
Join in sacred union.
Strength and Healing
Divine Spark and Gnosis of Womb’s Birth
We answer
We are
We aspire….

Journaling
The Sun and Moon Flow Through Me

As you move through this month’s lessons think about creating your own personal devotions and ways of honoring the Sun and the Moon. You could begin by brainstorming all the words that come to mind when you think of the Sun and the Moon. What emotions do those two words evoke? Use these are your framework around which to build your words of adoration. Use the cycle of the New-Full and Dark Moon to craft, build and then edit. Use the daily cycle of the Sun to begin each day with this practice- add to it at mid-day and review what has been written at the day’s end. Rest in the knowledge that each step of the process is drawing you deeper and nearer to Luna and Sol.

Meditation
In Contemplation of the Moon and the Sun

These brief meditations can be used at any time to strengthen your connection to the Moon and Sun. Begin with this simple format and then expand upon it as you become more familiar with the specific energies of each cycle and the Deity that you may be drawn to in their exploration. As with any endeavor, practice makes perfect, so consider incorporating an acknowledgement of the Lunar and Solar in your daily practice. Each time you connect in this way, the opening that occurs will inform all of your magickal/spiritual work and the greater mysteries will begin to reveal themselves.

Connecting To The MOON

full-moon-reflection
At the next full moon, set aside some time where you will not be disturbed and sit outside under moonlight’s gaze. Quiet yourself and simply sit. Just as you would drink in the warming rays of the sun on a beautiful summer’s day, drink in the energies of luna’s downpour. As you sit, let her tell you her own stories and lore. Listen with the rapt attention of a child sitting and listening to a story wrapped in the embrace of a mother’s love. And, with just as much love, gaze upward into the face of the radiant moon.

Luna watches milky white
And veiling of soft embrace
Beams of light and truth become
Pools of wisdom and grace.

Illusion’s cunning mirror
And knowledge of inner flood gates
Beacon the seeker deep into
Watery depths where SHE awaits.

Filter and flow of celestial sight
Velvet darkness parting the way of
Expanse bowing to your Path of Surrender.

The veil parts
The portal opens
And ALL stand waiting
In anticipation of your
Sacred Kiss.

Connecting To The SUN

sun-worship

This series of meditations will serve to connect you to the energies present during the daily cycle of the Sun. It is ideal if you can be physically outside during these times, but if that is not possible, opening yourself to deeper connection and looking out a window can serve as well.

At Dawn:
Sit quietly and watch as the Sun rises in the East. This is the dawn of new beginnings. The time of potential and moving towards those goals and plans created to be made manifest as the strength and cycle of the sun increases. Feel its gentle, yet potent energy filling every cell of your being; enlivening and awakening you to the “possibilities”. Open to the newness of this energy, filled with hope and promise. The start of the day. The start of new experience. The Beginnings of spiritual resolve and strength.

At Noon:
Sitting out beneath the noon-day sun, open to the warmth; the heat; the strength that is uplifting.  This is the Sun at its peak. Full, strong, potent and having mastery over that which it has birthed from the Dawn. This is the place of looking in fully illumined light the outcome of your efforts and well laid plans. This is the space of greatest reflection back to you of what goals have succeeded and which have failed in their course. This is the time of revealing ALL so that adjustments and acknowledgement can be offered up. This is the space of courage and strength where nothing remains hidden under the all seeing eye of noon-day’s vision.

At Dusk:
Sitting in an energy that has opened you to potential and revealed the product of your effort, allow the setting of the Sun to bathe you in its power of mystery held within and final release of what must be transformed, and reborn within Dawn’s embrace. Think on the activities of the day. Feel the strength that has accumulated and the greater resolve you have gathered into your being simply by sending awareness to the cycle of the Sun. This is the time for rest and renewal. This is the time for movement into the dreamscape of the Lunar Waters. This is the time for return.

Be sure to record your experiences in your Book of Shadows.

Breathing

meditationbreathe

By now you should be in the habit of beginning each of your meditation sessions with the Four-Fold breath. You may also be using the grounding meditation regularly as well.

Another technique is Alternate Nostril Breathing. This aids in opening both of the pathways of energy that run concurrently in our bodies; specifically, the Lunar and the Solar. The Right Nostril is aligned to the Solar energies and the Left Nostril, that of the Lunar.

* The Technique: Alternate Nostril Breathing
Nadi-Suddhi-Pranayama-alternate-nostril-breath-feature-470x260

Beginning with the right nostril, using your right thumb press the right nostril closed and inhale through the left – Hold.

Pinch the left nostril closed with the index finger and exhale through the right-Hold.

Inhale through the right nostril – hold. Pinch the right nostril closed with your thumb and exhale through the left.

Repeat the cycle of inhaling through one nostril. Pinching closed, then exhaling through the other. And so on. Repeat this pattern for 8 sets. When you have completed the cycle, you should feel a sense of clarity and energized calm. This exercise is an excellent way to begin your daily activities and your evening meditation practice.

Now, simply visualize the yellow flow of vibrant life sustaining energy as you breathe through the Right Nostril; this is the Solar energy. As you exhale and inhale through the Left Nostril visualize the cool healing energies of the Moon as breath moves in and out. The points of transition in alternating the nostrils are actually the place of union of the solar and lunar energies working in cohesion and synchronicity with one another.

Time to Grow (A Practice of Your Own)!

colors20dropplet20ripples20water

Here is a suggested schedule and time-line to consider when beginning a regular practice. Something good to do initially is to take some time to sit down and write out 3 goals you have for yourself and your spiritual development for a year and a day you start the first day of your routine. As you will see, when you return full circle back to the date -one year later- that you began, you will look back on those goals of intent- modify, celebrate and adjust as needed as you begin the next year.

Daily

• Meditation
• Breath Work
• Journaling

Weekly

• Pathworking
• Energy Practice
• Review your Journal and the week’s work

Monthly

• Ritual Work – Esbat or Sabbat, if it falls within a given month
• Breath Work
• Review of the month’s work and experiences*
* you can certainly do this more often, but sometimes starting with a monthly look back provides information that can help to identify any specific patterns that are evolving as part of the work you are doing.

Annual

• Review your journal
• Look back on what practices worked and what didn’t.
• Celebrate your year’s work by doing something special. This could be a trip to your favorite place in nature, attending a workshop, purchasing a magickal gift for YOURSELF.

And, The Next Day….

• Write out the goals you have for the upcoming year’s progress. Then, keep an eye out for those oh so synchronistic opportunities!
