CofMagick3-The Hall of the God: Toth

thoth_by_cherishedmemories-d39iw9a
You stand in the Center Hall of your Temple of the Wise, taking a moment to look around once again at the beauty of your space and the life that is beginning to flow through it. You breathe in deeply taking in the smells of this space, a hint of Myrrh burning and the mixture of wood, marble and more. You visited your Hall of the God some time ago and you are excited to enter this space once again.

You step towards the massive wooden door, noting that there appear to be symbols etched in the wood. You take a moment to look more closely and note that they are Hieroglyphs and fade in and out of sight. You push firmly to open it and look into a space that is adorned with columns and sandy colored stone. Greeting you is a figure that is human and animal. His head is that of an Ibis and his body is strong holding the energy of the space in dominance and power.

He looks at you and you have the sense that this God knows all that is held within your being…

He speaks and the words move through the air, commanding and power-filled…

I am known by many names
And write the wisdom of
The ages within my
Halls.

I pen the words of the other Gods
As they fall from the heavens in
Wisdom and might.

I am God of the Moon and
Stand with Ma’at in her
Hall of order and write
Her decree of judgement
In the weighing of the Heart.

My wisdom held the space
Of time for the those
Five who would weave
Their power of Magick
Life, Death and Re-membering.

I am known as Tehuti and
Hermes Trismegitus.

I am the voice of RA
And the Reckoner of
Times and Seasons.

My wisdom is that of
The heavens and the Aeons
Of creation that are held
In its mysteries.

thoth

We visited last, The Hall of the Goddess and found within it Seshat, consort and equal to Toth as scribe and keeper of Wisdom in her own right. She oversaw the the scrolls and tomes of wisdom that were housed within the Library of Toth.

This versatile and very active God served many roles in the ancient world and his legacy lives on in the many streams of both science and the humanities. His presence extends back to association with the Ogdoad, the eight Deities of  the Egyptian creation stories. The Greeks called the city of the Ogdoad- Hermopolis (City of Hermes), giving the connection of Toth (as the Greek version – Hermes). This transference was easily made as Hermopolis was known to the Egyptians as the City of Khmunu where Toth was its venerated God.

Toth’s presence and power took many forms and his epithets show the metamorphic nature of his worship. Like Seshat, he commanded words and the hidden knowledge contained within them and it was suggested that Toth created himself through the power of words and language.

Hermes, the Greek name given to Toth enhanced the gifts of this messenger God and elevated him to one whose skill of communication was also infused with the Wisdom of the Gods whom he served. A secondary connection to the name Hermes is that of the fabled Hermes-Trismegitus, credited as the father of Hermetics and the ancient wisdom held in the authoring of the Emerald Tablets. It is from these tablets that Hermeticism and many of the Laws, correspondences and magickal workings contained have formed the basis of modern practice.

Toth was considered master of the (“workings”) of the Universe. Because of his role in the creation myths of the Ogdoad, in one version being considered the Creator God who sang the eight deities into creation, his command of the heavens spoke of the mysteries hidden within the darkness of the night and was often considered a Moon God as is referenced below in the story of Horus eye and its restoration by Toth….

“The moon and the sun were initially thought of as the left and right eyes of Horus. According to legend, Horus’ left eye (the moon) was injured in a fight with Set and was restored by Thoth (“the eye of Horus”). However, as time progressed the moon came to be associated with Thoth, possibly because the crescent moon resembled the beak of an Ibis. During the Late period Thoth gained prominence when Khnum (Hermopolis Magna) became the capital. Archeologists found thousands of mummified ibis who were buried with honour in his name.” (J. Hill. Ancient Egypt)

Toth’s skill reached not only into the heavens but also into the Underworld, noting him as scribe and recorder of the deceased deed’s in the Halls of Ma’at; taking the epithet of “He who balances” and Master of Equilibrium”. As “the voice of Ra” Toth represented this God in the afterlife. This was a role that was similarly associated with Seshat, giving support to the Egyptian desire for order and balance of the polarities.

As scribe of the Gods, Toth  was often described as the “Lord of the Divine Body”, “Scribe of the Company of the Gods”, the “voice of Ra” or the “counsellor of Ra” who (along with Ma’at) stood on the sun barge next to Ra on his nightly voyage across the sky.

As a Deity who knew the mysteries of all Magick, it was said that Toth, with the assistance of Anubis, created the first ritual of mummification and helped Isis with the resurrection and re-membering of Osiris. In some ways, the power that Toth wielded was greater than that of the luminaries that dominated the Egyptian pantheon. His wisdom and ability to not only understand, but make practical as well as magickal use of what was taken in was interwoven into many of the prominent stories of the workings of Egyptian Alchemy and Magick.

Be mindful that in wishing to work and establish relationship with these most ancient of Gods, the blessings received will come with great responsibility. These are Deities that hold the accumulated wisdom of Aeons within their scope and Toth is the master of this library.

Every activity that you undertake in some way is related to the mastery of Toth and his skill in all disciplines. The sciences that are the containers of order and structure that hold the potential for manifestation. The arts that are the creative vibrations of science that moves and flows in the breath of newly formed pathways of expression. The language that conveys the desire of mind and heart to create and the simple and complex mechanics of a body in action infused with its own library of the ancient mysteries.

These and more were the tools of this Master of Scribes and Magician of life’s inter-workings. Your work is as simple as acknowledging Toth’s magick in you as human form, living, breathing and animating life force. Or it may be a journey of learning and then sharing what has been learned, bringing the power of language, writing and words into the magickal and manifest world.

All Hail Toth!
All Hail Tehuti!

HE who moves the
Fires of the Mind

HE who speaks the
Sacred words of the Gods

HE who stands at the
Threshold and waits
For the Seeker to pierce
The veil of darkened slumber

All Hail Toth!
All Hail Tehuti!

Overview of the Lesson-3: The Pillar of Manifest Air

1400x1400sr

A pillar of flow
A pillar of thought
Our mind
Our words
Our creations.

We take what moves freely
As inspiration breathes
Life into our vision.

Communication and invention
Enfold us in deep thought.

It is the space of imagining
Gusty winds sweeping dusty
Corners of mind’s intention.

This pillar of Air
This pillar of Ephemeral Grace
This pillar of my Making
Holds the keys that unlock my
Re-membered Gnosis.

We begin the next phase of our furnishing the practical floor of our Temple of the Wise. We have constructed our Pillar of Manifest Earth and unlocked some of the mysteries of form and Divinity, insight and physical experience.  Within those earthy realms the anchors have been strengthened and all that we thought we knew of foundational effort has been tested and refined to be a more suitable support for the work at hand.

The Pillar of Manifest Air

This month we move on to the next pillar to be created on the ground floor of our temple. In the Hall of the Goddess we will greet Seshat, Goddess of Wisdom and Scribe of Gnosis. In The Hall of the God, we will call to Tehuti, Scribe to the Great Gods and holder of the first knowledge.

The Hall of Celestial Wisdom will offer experience of Mercury, planet of communication in all of its forms and in the Hall of Divination we will begin our studies of the Major Arcana of the Tarot as mind and intuitive sight seek answers.

Digging Deeper

This month’s Digging Deeper page will stimulate the creative mind. Writing prompts, vision quests and other openings will engage the mind of manifestation.

Breathe deeply and fully
Feel the air rushing through.

Step strongly and with purpose
And approach the Great Hall’s door.

The Goddess awaits you
She of writing and wisdom.

Push open the doorway and in
Seeking cross over to stand upon
The floors of your making
In The Hall of the Goddess.

Seshat waits at the threshold
Crowned with Star of Papyrus and pen in hand.

CofMagick3-The Hall of the Goddess:Seshat

hathor-seshat-e-mut-9849
Light fills the Hall as you step through the doorway and Seshat stands centrally awaiting you. She does not lift her gaze, so intent is her work as she writes on a palm reed. You approach, curious to see what she has crafted and as you come nearer, she looks up and you see an intelligence that is older than the beginning of time shining in eyes that sparkle. She finishes the last bit of recording, pauses a moment checking what she is scribed and then turns to face you.

She is radiant and stands with power as a gentle smile face. She extends a hand and beckons you to come closer and as she speaks her words of power, Her Hall fills with the light of star and planet and the sound weaves images of creation filling you….

My words of power
Are written in the
Halls of Wisdom
And I stand at the
Threshold of entry
To the House of Life.

My magick lay in
The seas of creation
And my writings
Hearken a new age
Of
Nature’s wisdom.

I am ancient born
But my vision
Will lay the foundations
Of
What humanities gifts may be.

I am keeper of the histories
Calculator of all sum’s worth
And as I measure each grain
Of time’s sandy shore
You shall come to know
Your own creative
Power.

Who is Seshat?

The Goddess, Seshat is known as the goddess of accounting, writing, measurement and mathematics. Her name means, “female scribe”, “sesh” (scribe) and as such she is considered the feminine counterpart to the Scribe of Wisdom, Tehuti (Toth).

She wears a leopard skin (dress) an honor that was normally held only for the “sem” priests; denoting her high status. The recording and writing components of Egyptian life were executed only by those of higher status and teachings, and as such represented the defeat of the God, Set.

Her headdress is that of a seven-pointed star or a rosette above which is a pair of inverted cow’s horns suggesting a crescent moon. The star, in particular, was associated with being the source of all of creation, possibly representing the seven inner planets and their dynamic energy as that of the Sun and Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn.

Her connection to Toth presents in many ways. She is considered y son to be his consort/wife and the feminine principle of a duality that played a significant part in Egyptian life and the desire for Ma’at or Order. The Egyptians believed that Seshat invented writing, while Thoth taught writing to mankind. She was also known as ‘Mistress of the House of Books’, indicating that she she held prominence in maintaining and effectively using Thoth’s library of spells and scrolls.

In Egyptian Mythology, Seshat holds great responsibility in the workings of The Tree of Life. The Tree of Life was believed to hold the Knowledge of the Divine Plan or the equivalent to a map of destiny which existed from when the world was created and marked the beginning of time. Seshat and her counterpart Thoth kept a record of the pharaoh’s name and the length of his reign on the Tree of Life which protected the ruler and perpetuated his name. Thoth and Seshat were the guardians of the sacred hieroglyphs.

For this reason. Seshat was an important ally to the Pharaoh. She served as record keeper of his oratory and historian of his deeds. She also assisted the Pharaoh at the “stretching the cord” foundation ritual which involved the accurate measuring of what would be the architectural foundation at chief Temple sites. To the ancient Egyptians, the Temples were the manifest forms of the Cosmos itself. In her role as Mistress of Architecture, Seshat was considered as she who held the correct “blueprint” for laying the foundation of that Cosmos on Earth. This was accomplished by her knowledge of the stars and the Cosmic realms, ensuring the precise alignment of the Temple with astronomical emphasis…

“ One of the most important ceremonies in the foundation of Egyptian temples was known as Pedjeshes (Pedj–“to stretch,” Shes–“a cord”) and it forms the subject of one of the chief monumental ornaments in the temples of Abydos, Heliopolis, Denderah, and Edfu. The reigning pharaoh and a priestess personifying Seshat, the goddess of writing, proceeded to the site, each armed with a golden mallet and a PEG connected by a cord to another PEG. Seshat having driven her peg home at the previously prepared spot, the king directed his gaze to the constellation of the Bull’s Foreleg (this constellation is identical with Ursa Major, “Great Bear,” and the “hoof” star is Benetnasch, Eta Ursae majoris). Having aligned the cord to the “hoof” and Spica as seen through the visor formed by Seshat’s curious headdress, he raised his mallet and drove the peg home, thus marking the position of the axis of the future temple.”

– Cyril Fagan, Zodiacs Old and New (1951)

This month is a wonderful time to come to know this Goddess. It is the beginning of the calendar year and a time when resolutions are made and new ways to improve ourselves are sought out. Consider including in these the gift of creativity. Send out the intention of getting to know more of your nature as scribe of your own destiny.
Spend some time with Seshat. Open yourself to her creative wisdom. Write, paint, sing and dance in joy calling out her name as you weave her magick of creation about you.

A Bonus Post for your Hall of the Goddess! Happy Samhain…

79519784d655d8109cbe8134e7e34b34

This time of the year is one of connection. The veils between the worlds have thinned and many will reach out to the Goddess Hecate as they seek the deeper wisdom of her triune form.

Some will call to the Goddess to guide them to the land of the ancestors as they seek the gifts of those beloved who have passed on. Others will call to the Goddess seeking greater knowledge of their own strength and the power held in the trinity in the human form. And, some will use the energy of Hecate to transform and renew what will be carried into these months ahead that may be used as space of reflection.

I invite you on a journey to the Crossroads. The link below will take you to a recording of a pathworking I wrote last year entitled:

Hecate’s Labyrinth

The recording is an mp3 and is downloadable for future use. May the blessings of Hecate fill you as you stand at Her crossroads and seek Her wisdom.

Digging Deeper

901677783

You’ve done a lot of foundational work this month and your Temple of the Wise is coming to life filled with your intention and effort. Your Temple now holds Four Halls of creative intention and the balance of the Divine, Inner Sight and the Wisdom of the Stars. In the months ahead, these Halls will not only become resources for your study and practice, but a stream of integrated information to draw upon in all of your endeavors.

I’ve purposefully paused instead of jumping directly into the next Lesson. In order for a foundation to be lasting, it must be tried and testing. All the proper assessments must be made that it can sustain and hold what it was built to accommodate and often there is the need to re-do, refine and re-structure.

To complete this lesson, the work of digging deeper is that of anchoring. I want you to read through each of the week’s lessons again. Analyze what you find has been created and be ruthless in what meeds reshaping. Return what is not the best of your efforts to the Great Mother to be used and transformed.

Do Not Rush through the work you have done. This may seem tiresome and boring, especially if your enthusiasm has been piqued; but there is always something new to be gained in returning to what was lain as the basics. Remember, the work of this month’s lesson was that of establishing the Pillar of Earth as support to your building. Earth requires the full measure of your attention. Earth requires the tender care of a loving hand to mold and shape it into useable quality. It is from this Pillar as we move into the next of Air and soar that the tethers planted in Earth will provide the solid ground of return.

I will post some special workings that will assist in this process throughout the month. The first being a pathworking of balance in honor of the New Moon in Libra on Monday.

So, Dig in Deep and let the inspecting begin…

CofMagick2: The Hall of Divination

gdm___delphi_oracle_by_r_omero-d67nex1

Gaze into that
Which holds the key
Reflecting back the
Treasure of answer to me.

Wood and wax
Crystal and flame
The truth revealed
The heart’s desire
Thusly named.

You stand in the Center Hall of your Temple of the Wise, taking a moment to look around once again at the beauty of your space and the life that is beginning to flow through it. You breathe in deeply taking in the smells of this space, a hint of Frankincense burning and the mixture of wood, marble and more. You are now ready to begin filling your Hall of Divination. Here, you will practice the art of scrying, tarot and more. Here you will open all of your senses to the information that always surrounds and is available.

This is a journey of learning about yourself, because until you fully know the inner landscape of your own being you will never be able to completely understand the unique process that is your way of making sense of information received and information shared.

You step towards the fourth door within your Temple and note that its color, pattern and substance appear to be shifting and changing. You take a breath in and a pattern and color take shape on the door. You exhale and it changes color, pattern and texture. You take another breath and it seems to respond to this contraction of breath, ebbing and flowing from one vision to the next.

This is your first lesson; the lesson that all information constantly changes in response to our interaction with it. To be able to draw from this flow what is useable now, you will need to learn how to identify what is viable, what is other people’s stuff and what is imagination taking hold.

Take another deep breath and this time, clearly formulate what you wish the image of this door to be. Continue breathing holding this intention, until all of the parts come together and you reach out, pushing the door open.

You hesitate for a moment, afraid of what may be found within. It is dark and smoky and you can barely make out what is contained within. No need for fear abut the unknown. The unknown comprises each of the “next” moments that we experience daily. They move so quickly and this state of their being is so transparent that we don’t perceive them in this way. But, truly, we do not know what the next moment may bring, and even so, we do not fear it. We just move through our day. You step through the doorway and time stands still, the reality of the moment dissipating as the smoke clears and you see a large round bowl in the center of the room……

Within this Hall of Divination we will explore the various tools of Divination and learn what our method of discernment is. Some are visual receivers, others hear, others feel or have sensation and others receive downloads of information, much like the abstract format of a computer print out.

Review Lesson 10: Divination and Spell Work (Year and A Day on the Wiccan Path). We will refer back to this lesson as we fill the library of information in this Hall.

You begin your building in this Hall from the perspective of Earth, and making use of the elements within Earth are great tools of connection. Water, is a primary conduit of information. The waters of the earth and within our manifest form ebb and flow in accord with our celestial Mother Moon. Our emotions rise and fall as we interact and information flows from our bodies connecting all of us.

This first exercise is one of water scrying. Scrying or to descry by def:

a : to catch sight of
b : to find out, discover
c: to make known; reveal

We peer into the reflective surface of the water and hope “to catch sight” of the answer to our query. Don’t concern yourself with having to see right away. That is not the point of this exercise. Experience and practice will open you more deeply. So, consider this exercise a first “exercise”……

Divining the Waters of Insight

CofMagick2-Divining the Waters of Insight

scrying_plate_colored_water

Suggested Audio you may wish to use to accompany your scrying:
Weaving My Ancestor’s Voices by Sheila Chandra
Track: The Dreaming

You will need:

Three candles- one for either side of the bowl
A dark-bottomed bowl
Water
A journal and pen
A space where you will not be disturbed for approx. 3 minutes

Place the bowl on a surface that is tall enough for you to peer down into it. If you are sitting, use a low table. You want to be able to look from above down into the water. Place two of the candles on either side of the bowl. Place the third candle directly behind the bowl. Pour enough water into the bowl to rise about 2/3rds of the way.

Dim the lights and reposition the candles if necessary so they are not directly reflected in the bow. They should provide back lighting, but not be a distraction. Take a few deep breaths, acknowledging your physical body in the space of your choosing and the surroundings. Take several more deep breaths, now envisioning that your space is filled with peaceful energy and that only that which is positive and for the highest good for all will be held within.

Take another deep breath- if you have chosen a piece of music to accompany this session begin it now- and quiet your mind and any distracting thoughts. Breathe deeply- and hold the intention of allowing your sight to be opened and whatever visions wish to present themselves to fill the energy of the water.

Adjust your gaze as you peer into the bowl. Soften the lids and allow the impressions to flow.Continue to breathe deeply and fully simply remaining open to the experience. Remain in this state of intention for as long as you wish, but no more than 30 minutes.

When you have engaged for some time, begin to restore your clarity of hard focus on the bowl and candles. Offer the space of gratitude to what you have experienced and breathe deeply feeling lungs expanding against ribs. Return your focus to your surroundings and fully engage your senses in the physical experience. Breathe deeply and extinguish the candles, restore the lights and write down the details of this first experience.

Some Thoughts:

It is of no importance if you did not see anything. You are training yourself to open more deeply and see with eyes that are not just physical. Trying too hard to make something happen creates blocks that become a distraction to what is actually occurring. Practice will bring deeper relaxation into the protocol. Deeper relaxation will remove the usual physical distractions. Be sure to record any dreams you may have that you feel are pertinent as well. Sometimes, these exercises will stimulate other modes of perceiving information. Remember, I said that everyone has their own unique way of Divining.
