Hail to the Maiden of Fire and the Youth of Earth!

tumblr_nnadxnNUHM1so7ugco1_1280

All Hail to astrological Beltane and the parting of the veils of new life!

A little background..

In many traditions the date of celebration for Beltane is May 1st and that of its counterpart, Samhain is Oct. 31 or Nov. 1. Although these dates have accumulated much astral energy from repeated use, if you wish to follow the astronomical approach, which is where the origins of the cross-quarter days lay, those dates are premature.

Beltane falls mid-point between the Vernal Equinox and the Summer Solstice. Each of the cross-quarter Sabbats – Beltane, Lammas, Samhain and Imbolc fall within that half way point between an Equinox and a Solstice. And, for those ancient practitioners who strongly followed the correlate of Solar tides, this placement provided very specific energy in relationship to the line of the Sun’s outpouring onto Earth, its placement during these times between and what was called into action in celebration, ritual and devotion.

If you look a bit closer at the timing of the astrological correlates and know, even a bit, about the energetics of the zodiacal signs as they move through the Solar Year, there is a wellspring of underlying meaning that can be drawn from as you open to new levels of connection that deeply inform how you construct your personal ritual or celebration of these cross-quarter days. Stand Down-Mars Retrograde and More!

maxresdefault-1

I chose the phrase “stand down” as the title for this post because that is exactly what is being called into motion with this cluster of potent retrograde planets; the most recent being Mars and Pluto.

One of the definitions of the phrase “stand down” is …

“to relax or cause to relax after a state of readiness.”

And, this state of being is one that will serve you in good stead as Cardinal (initiating and catalyzing) energy and Mutable (flexibility)energy play their games of contraction and expansion cloaked in the mantles of their astrological/elemental signs. Be alert and ready for change and disruption, but be sure to give enough time to rest and integrate what has newly been formed. There will be outbursts, flare ups, challenges and more, but co-existent with all of these are times for reflection, cooling down and gates to be opened and accessed as we re-think the limitations and possibilities that are available to us.

Below is the auspicious line-up that will be exerting maximum influence with the potential for change that is not going to be a quick and easy fix. Then again, another phrase that comes to mind is…

“nothing truly worthwhile and lasting comes easy”

CofMagick-3: The Hall of Divination

Slide1

The Fool
I am the bridge between completion and new beginnings.

I stand at the precipice of the world, willing,
Ready and able to take that leap of faith.

I am the representative of foolhardy youth
That is beauteous of form and I have
Neither care nor thought to weigh me down.

The Sun is warm on my back
The ground solid beneath the
Delicate placement of my feet.

All the world waits with suspended
Breath to see what folly my next
footfall brings.

They will wait in vain
For what they
Lack in faith
Is the solid foundation
That prevents me from
Faltering on the Path.

You stand in the Center Hall of your Temple of the Wise,  and pause taking time to look around once again at the beauty of what you have created and the magick that is beginning to flow through it. You breathe in deeply taking in the smells of this space, a hint of Sage burning weaving through an aromatic mixture of wood, marble and more.

You move towards your Hall of Divination. Each step bringing back the memory of your time spent here previously. Your first lesson here was that of scrying. We used an element of earth; that of water. You may wish to revisit this exercise and review some of the fundamentals we discussed:

Divining the Waters of Insight

You step towards the fourth door within your Temple and note that its color, pattern and substance appear to be shifting and changing. You take a breath in and a pattern and color take shape on the door. You exhale and it changes color, pattern and texture. You take another breath and it seems to respond to this contraction of breath, ebbing and flowing from one vision to the next. You remember the lesson of this transition, and refocus your attention as you clearly formulate what you wish the image of this door to be. Continue breathing holding this intention, until all of the parts come together and you reach out, pushing the door open.

This is a journey of learning about yourself, because until you fully know the inner landscape of your own being you will never be able to completely understand the unique process that is your way of making sense of information received and information shared.

This visit we are going to begin  building our knowledge of basic Tarot and using earth again, engaging our sight as a means of interpretation of specific imagery. The Rider-Waite deck is the standard Tarot deck used in beginning study of this craft, although not the only choice. There are hundreds of decks now, many are themed and once you have learned the basics, you may find yourself drawn to another.

You step through the doorway and time stands still, the reality of the moment dissipating as your eye adjust to the dimly lit space contained within. You take a few steps forward and now see that in the center of the room stands a wooden table. It is round and has a simple black cloth covering it. As you move closer, you see that there are Tarot cards placed centrally.

The deck contains 78 cards, 56 of the Minor Arcana Cards and 22 of the Major. We will learn more about the meanings of the cards and their attributions, but for this visit, we are simply going to “sit” with one of the cards and remain open to what impressions are received……

The Fool Begins the Journey….

Be sure to review Lesson 10: Divination and Spell Work (Year and A Day on the Wiccan Path). We will refer back to this lesson as we fill the library of information in this Hall. Our next visit we will learn more about the Tarot, use a 3-card spread and exercise our Divinatory skills.

The Fool Begins the Journey

TheFools-481x364

Image:Rider-Waite Tarot Deck

You pick up the deck of cards, shuffle it and draw a single card from the deck. This card is one of the Major Arcana – Key O – The Fool. You find a comfortable space in your Hall and sit on one of the chairs placed against the wall.

Breathe deeply and fully. Relax your gaze and simply sit with the card. Open your mind to whatever impressions of what you are seeing choose to present.  The colors, the characters, the scenery… everything. Take as much time as you need.

When you have finished your exploration. you stand and walk back to the table and see that there is a book on it. It is called “A Walk Through the Major Arcana” and you open it to the page that contains information about Tarot Key O – The Fool. You begin to read…

” The Fool is either the most dimwitted of mortals or is the very essence of absolute release and trust in the Universe. There is no obvious fear nor worry in the fact that he is at the very edge of a cliff and even the nipping at his heels of the dog, does nothing to disturb his picturesque “posing”. I suppose the question to ask would be how he came to be in this place, what drove him to the “ends of the earth” and will he blindly continue moving forward falling to certain death.

One of the things I have always liked about this card is the utter unknown or unknowing that it conveys; and that the outcome is all of our own making. He is off on a journey, with no specific destination and where he finally ends up is a matter of his own WILL and faith. This card reminds me of the grace, balance and ease with which we should all move through life- not foolishly unmindful of what treachery may lay beneath, but with joy, confidence and the unquestionable knowledge that if we move with faith and a Divinely inspired Will, the Gods will be watching our back!”

As you think on these words, your own impressions begin to bubble up and interweave creating a deeper and more connected source of interpretation. You look at the page and see that as you think through your impressions, each is written into the book, filling the page and by no seen hand or pen. Your thoughts are literally transferring to this volume and your impressions are creating new paragraphs of understanding.

When you have finished, you pick up the book, read through all that is now written about this first Tarot Key of the Major Arcana. You smile, satisfied and very happy with the progress you have made. These thoughts and feelings move through you as the table, cards and book begin to fade and you find yourself once again in the dimly Hall, seemingly empty of furnishings. You look around, knowing that visual seeing is not the only way of knowing, and so this is also true of your Hall of Divination. You walk towards the door, gently push it open and return once again to your Temple of the Wise.

Full Moon in Libra
8:01am

Lunar Eclipse

Sun in Aries

Mother Moon waxes Full at 8:01am (EDT) tomorrow morning in the astrological sign of Libra. Libra is represented as Cardinal (catalyzing and initiating) Air (mental processes and movement). This is an airy energy that moves in a more refined way so it can actualize what it aspires towards.

This is a Full Moon of opportunity to establish a harmonious and more centered mental outlook. The Full Moon occurs at the peak of the lunar cycle and as such brings the dynamic of realized potential that is illuminated, expansive and heart centered.  Libra’s symbol is that of the scales, so balance is a theme of this sign; not equanimity; rather a balance that occurs when everything is as it should be with the appropriate amount of energy in dominance that will bring about refinement and productivity.

If you breathe deeply
You can smell the
Damp soil holding
The seeds of new life.

If you breathe deeply
The subtle fragrance
And the promise of
Flowering fields
Fills the senses.

If you breathe deeply
Taking in the energy
Of potent and fertile
Space you can feel
What is awaiting the
Awakening.

If you breathe deeply
You will see the power
Of what is exhaled out
From the Maiden’s breath
Of promise and light
Is the template of form
For what will be
The act of creation.

Bonus Post: CofM-The Hall of the Goddess

Brighid-39955453249

Happy Imbolc Everyone....

I wanted to share with you a post and pathworking I wrote a few years ago in honor of the Goddess Brighid. This is a bonus post that you may add to the energy of your Hall of the Goddess.  Enjoy…

Brighid’s Healing Sword: Imbolc

This turn of the Greater Wheel moves us towards a place of newness and the quickening of what was brought to light at Yule, the Winter Solstice. We stand at the mid-mark between the act of revealing (Winter Solstice) the fertility that lay dormant from the triple harvest and the action of sowing and planting (Spring Equinox) what we hope will prove viable and grow to its fullest potential. This is the time of quickening and enlivening the hidden seeds of transition and preparation of what will wither and die and what will germinate to become a viable product.

Our coven, Coven of the Mystic Path of the Assembly of the Sacred Wheel Tradition, uses Imbolc to focus on the Celtic Goddess, Brighid. We call forth the Fires of Brighid’s forge, infusing ourselves with their quickening properties. We make oath to our chosen path and to the Greater Work of ourselves so that the quickening of our minds and hearts awaken what can blossom in the months ahead. And, we call upon her creativity to inspire us as we move forward towards the next turn of the Wheel. This year we will call forth the Goddess as Warrior and wielder of the healing sword.

For most, the first encounter with this fiery Goddess is one associated with her triune nature. She is Maiden, Mother and Crone holding the keys to creativity, inspiration and deep healing. She is also the Triple Flame, acting as central catalyst of the purpose intended and initiator of those who willingly cross the threshold of transformation. As the patroness of poets, divination and prophecy she is the Fire of Inspiration. In her role of patroness of healers and Goddess of fertility, she is the Fire of the Hearth and childbirth. And, as patroness of smiths, craftsmen and the forge, she is the Fire of the Forge, burning brightly and transforming and transmuting all that enter the heat of the flame.

But, there is also a lesser-known aspect of the Goddess Brighid. Her ancient name of The Fiery Arrow gives some indication of this aspect, although it is usually associated with the Goddess as maintainer of justice and right action; setting the course of action in a balanced way and clearing away all that would interfere or challenge that state. If we take this idea to a deeper place of understanding, Brighid’s energy becomes that of the Warrior who wields the flaming sword that destroys, cauterizes and then heals. It is She, who heals with the precision of the surgeon guiding the scalpel. She, who cuts through the glamour and unyielding ignorance of ego driven will and carves the path of knowledge that becomes true gnosis. And, it is She, who plunges the un-tempered blade of inventive mind into the hellish fires that forge and manifest a blade that is pure, clear and strong in its action and intent.

I have worked with this aspect of Brighid for many years and in many ways, and the mark of its transformation has been lasting and opened the way for growth and a deeper understanding of the process of release and healing. Just as the sword’s blade goes through multiple steps of heating and cooling, resting and shaping to achieve the brilliance and beauty of what will become a finely crafted sword; the process of this healing warrior Goddess tests the metal of your own making. She allows you to see the rough product that is your will and plunges you deep into the flaming desire for what you wish to achieve. If you remain too long from inertia or misguided will, what emerges is misshapen and unusable. It’s brittleness breaks your spirit and the wounds it inflicts are jagged and long to heal. If tempered with enough flexibility to change course as needed, the honing and sharpening of the skills required for successful change are exacted. All is brought to the quickening fires so that what has been reshaped and reformed may become as one and part of the finished product. A time of rest and integration occurs and finally as the blade is brought from its place of synthesis and strengthening, it is plunged once again into the heart of greater Will and the flames of Intentional Desire. The finished product is a work of beauty and a gift from the forge of Brighid.

I offer to you a pathworking, inviting you to invoke the energy of Brighid’s Healing Sword and the opportunity to stand in Her radiance of remaking. May your journey be powerful and may the Goddess bless you with the crafting of your own healing blade….

The Smith’s Blade

A Pathworking of Brighid:The Smith’s Blade

unnamed

The Smith’s Blade

Take a few deep breaths and allow your consciousness to settle at the space of the third eye. Turn your attention within and see on this inner landscape a blank screen and allow yourself to be drawn towards it. As you focus on this space you become aware of a small mist of indigo blue energy forming in front and around you. The particles are very small and the energy is both uplifting and relaxing as it encircles you. Take a few deep breaths and step through this veil.

As you emerge, you find yourself standing outside what appears to be a blacksmith’s shoppe. You can hear the rhythmic clanging of a hammer and smell the fires from the forge. It is evening and all is dark around you save for the light glowing from within and shimmering through slats of a wooden building. You step forward towards the open entryway and stand quietly observing a wiry built man bent over and working deftly as the glimmer of unpolished metal flashes.

Repetitively and with great precision, he places the unshaped metal into the forge, heating it and then pulling it out to the edge of the table, gently hammering it into the desired shape or at times simply allowing the red glow to cool before it is placed once again in the hot flames. This occurs for several times and with each heating and hammering, the metal takes on more of the shape of the blade.

He looks carefully at what has been crafted and satisfied that this process is finished, he gently wraps the blade and places it aside allowing it to cool completely. He pulls from the space in which he placed the cooling blade another wrapped item and as he unwraps it you see that this is a blade that had been crafted a day earlier.

He steps over to the grinder and begins to sharpen and finely hone the edges and point of the blade. You notice that this blade seems to glow and has a certain shine to it already, although it is not polished. You feel drawn to it, but remain standing in the doorway, hoping that you will remain unnoticed. He looks carefully at the edges and then plunges the sword into the heat of the flaming forge. Quickly the glowing red blade is retrieved and plunged into a water bath to speed the cooling and hardening process. Again the blade is tempered by heat and water and you think on the process of emotion and will and the need for the correct balance of each to be in place to make for supple yet strong action and purposeful will.

You see the Smith smiling as he lifts the blade upwards, knowingly and assured that it will have a certain amount of flexibility yet still retain its sharp edge. Now the sword is ready for completion. He selects the necessary parts of pommel, guard and hilt and with skill assembles all precisely and artistically. The sword is now complete and he lifts his gaze, staring directly at you, beckoning you to come towards him.

You are ready to speak, but he lifts a finger to his lips indicating for you to be silent and to follow behind him as he brushes past you. He steps outside and you turn towards him, both of you facing a sky that is now colored with the rising of the morning sun. He lifts the blade upward and it shines brightly as the first fiery rays of sunlight stream across it. The brilliance of its reflection expands and for a moment you close your eyes, the intensity is so great. You open them and see that the blacksmith is gone and hovering mid-air the sword glows red and pulses with heat that seems to course through you. The flaming glow fills the space and from its center the blade elongates and transforms into a woman of great beauty and flaming red hair. Her eyes glow like sunlit embers of flame and you bow in homage to the Goddess, Brighid. As she approaches you feel the power and strength of Her presence. You see that she carries the sword that you witnessed being crafted and you feel a gentleness about Her that offers you comfort as to how this Divine sword might be used. She has come as the healing sword to offer her many gifts if you ready for her transformative energy.

You approach and kneeling before her you speak of what needs healing and transformation. Each word spiraling up and out like wisps of smoke heated and released by her power. You surrender to her all your doubts and fears and one by one each is dissected and removed from your being leaving you feeling light and unencumbered. When you have finished offering all that has troubled you, she bids you to look upwards and as she lifts her fiery blade warm droplets of healing water shower down about you. Compassion and warmth envelope you and you are held in the embrace of the Goddess as she quickens and enlivens you. Rest in this state for as long as is needed.

When you have received all that is needed at this time, you gently rise and offer up gratitude to the Goddess for the blessings she has given. As these thankful thoughts quicken in your mind and move easily from your lips, you begin to step backwards, as flames begin to rise where Brighid was standing. They reach upwards like strands of red hair caught in a breeze and give the appearance of flickering with shades of emerald green and flashes of silvery metal. You stand taking in the beauty of the sight and the warmth of its heat and the knowledge that you have been transformed by the Goddess, Herself.

The flames gently dwindle and fade and in their place is the smith holding the sword of the Goddess. He walks towards you and gently places it in your hand, softly telling you that it had been crafted for you. He tells you that the gift of the healing sword is given to those who will use it wisely and courageously. And, that the Goddess who offers this gift is always near at hand, ready to inspire and offer her healing so that you may thrive and grow as Her Divine Child.

You take a deep breath in and close your eyes, holding the sword tightly to your breast and as you exhale and open your eyes, you see that your awareness has returned to that of observing the blank inner screen of your consciousness. You take a few deep breaths in and with each exhalation your awareness settles back into the space of your physical being and space surrounding you. You gently flutter your eyes open and look around at your surroundings with keener sight and the knowledge that you carry the healing blade within.

So Mote It Be!

CofMagick3-The Hall of Celestial Wisdom

222584_544852958861678_1500746040_n
You stand in the Center Hall of your Temple of the Wise, taking a moment to look around and take note of how this space is changing. Each time you enter, something new has been added as this Temple truly becomes a reflection of your work and progress.

You breathe in deeply taking in the smells of this space, a hint of Frankincense burning and the mixture of wood, marble and the aroma that is your personal signature from your many times here. Last month you entered your Hall of Celestial Wisdom and explored the Great Astrological Wheel. Your lessons are just beginning in this vastness of space, time and light and each time you enter this space a broader perspective of your place in all of it will begin to reveal itself.

You step towards the third door within your Temple and smile in recognition of this door of dark wood. Now, with anticipation you push firmly to open it. There is no figure to greet you and the Hall is dimly lit with flickers of light here and there. You step through the doorway, and are surprised that the circular walls you found on your last visit have been replaced by clear glass, looking out onto a moonlit terrain. You look upwards and take note that what should be a ceiling, opens out onto a black velvet sky. You breathe in deeply and allow your eyes to adjust to the dim light and sit down on the cool marble floor, surrounded by the beauty of the Cosmos and a night illuminated by a Full Moon….

To continue our studies and in honor of the first Full Moon of 2016 that waxes in all of her glory on Saturday (Jan. 23rd), our focus will be on role of the Moon in Magick and our mundane world.

The Moon is most often associated with the Feminine principle; the Goddess. Her phases of New, Full and Dark correlate to the triple aspects of Maiden, Mother and Crone, respectively. In the study of astrology, the Moon rules the astrological sign of Cancer, a Cardinal Water sign. The energy of Cancer is typified by the deep attachment to home, emotional attachment in relationship and a deep and abiding loyalty in conserving what nurtures. These are all attributes of the Moon as the life giver, and protectress of the ebb and flow of chronological time as the product of that life catalyzer evolves towards maturity and fullness.

We call to the energies of the New Moon as the space of time to seed what will germinate as the pressure of waxing  and bolstering takes hold. The exuberance and expectation of the Maiden, not quite ready to reveal the entirety of her beauty, presses her fertility into the soil with graceful fingers and gentle hands. If we have tended and nurtured what we initiated, we eagerly await the Fullness of our efforts. Mother Moon waxes full shining in all of her glory, proudly illuminating the creation of tender loving intent.

The cycle continues and what has peaked at the Full Moon, now completes its measure of return as the energy wanes and the protection that was the Mother’s now flows into the strength and confidence of the Crone. The time of nurturing is over and in its place stands the wise woman who does not mince words, holds us accountable and pokes and prods with bony finger if displeased with the choices made. The Moon settles into her cloak of darkness, shrouded once again in the mantle of velvety black sky. This is the commanding power of one who does not need to stand in the light to exert a presence that is palpable and reaches into the most remotes spaces of our souls.

The magick now is held in the space of transmutation. Old becomes the youth. Endings herald new beginnings and the silence is a pregnant pause awaiting new life as the Maiden of the New Moon and the cycle begins anew.

Each of these Moons does not move through these tides alone. The dialogue of exchange is formed as the actors take the stage; planets ready to exert their influence on whatever phase holds sway. Some of these actors will remain in their roles for extended periods of time (retrogrades) and others will give a gentle or abrupt nod as the transit on their way. The costumes selected change and the designation of what type of role is to be played moves from that of the catalyst (Cardinal) to the stalwart (Fixed) and dependable character into one that shape shifts and morphs (Mutable) as needed. The costumes also tell the tale of time and all, from the enthusiastic child (Aries) to the mature individual (Libra) and finally grow into the wizened aged one (Pisces). All of these pieces come together is their specific and unique patterns to create a story that is unique to the date and time that Lady Moon steps onto the stage and calls to the devotees of audience to Hail and Welcome her talents and gifts.

As you think on these things and look out at the Moonscape surrounding, the magnitude and power of this Moon of Fullness floods through you. This energy is subtle and electrifying; serene and energizing; fluid yet strong. You stand drinking it all in as the veiling of who and what you thought you were slips away and the truth of your being shines as brightly as the Moon Herself. You close your eyes, offering up thanks for these lessons of the Moon, breathe deeply and opening eyes that are now starlight, you walk towards the door and pass through, back into your center hall…
