The Hermit’s Light: Celebrating the Autumnal Equinox

The Great Wheel has turned once again and we find ourselves at the place of the Autumnal Equinox. The Equinoxes astronomically mark a point when the North and South poles of the Earth are neither tilted away nor towards the Sun. Twice yearly, this event means that both hemispheres are in receipt of equal amounts of day or night respectively. In the Northern Hemisphere the air is cooler, the leaves are turning and beginning to fall from brittle branches and all of life is giving pause to prepare for what changes lay ahead. This is the second of the three harvests and the fields are already beginning to brown as the day’s light gently wanes and we are enveloped in the quickening darkness of the setting sun. In a few more weeks the silence of Samhain’s energy will issue call to the Ancestors and their wisdom. But, for now we must lay the foundations upon which we will stand as we reach deeper into the waning year’s shrouded light. Read more:

The Smells and Bells

EssentialOilsPicture
The Smells and Bells of the craft is a fun way of identifying those things considered as enhancers to magickal working. Because we are sensory driven beings, most of these things are selected because they  act to stimulate our subconscious and form the necessary neural connections associated with energy and magickal working.

Another compelling reason to use these items is that they each carry a specific form of energy that can be woven into the basic mix of intent to produce a result that is fuller and richer in expression. Some of the ways these tools are used are in spell working, ritual, devotional and meditative practice. Be creative as you explore how and when to use these additions. As you become more familiar with these and other items that can be incorporated into magickal workings you will find that your foundational knowledge begins to expand in accord and this process is the beginning of formulating what works for you and what you enjoy working with as your tools of the craft. Always record your impressions of efficacy of use and the outcomes in a journal.  This will actually become your own personal set of references for correspondences based on first hand experience.

The Tools of Purification

These are the basic items used to purify space and yourself prior to entering and/or establishing sacred space. When combined in this way, they represent the four elements and you as Spirit stand centrally in receipt and use of these purifiers.

Incense – The Combination of Air and Fire

ss11In times of old, incense was used as a way of cleansing and purifying. Frankincense historically was used in churches as a disinfectant at times when plagues, disease and hygiene was less than sufficient and the routine death toll was high. Copal is noted for its ability to open the inner sight. Lavender calms and soothes and Myrrh works as both purifier and opener of the psychic and spiritual realms.

Incense comes in many forms, sticks and cones being the easiest to use. Resins of incense are used with charcoal discs and heat proof burners and produce the most aromatic and robust fragrance. I love using the resins, but care should be used if burning indoors in making sure the room you are using is well ventilated and fire proof under-liners are used for any burners set on furniture or other potentially flammable surfaces. The  other caution is to have an oven mitt handy. There has been more than one occasion where I was so enthralled with the working, etc.. that I forgot about the practicality of not lifting a hot censor without gloves.

Recipes for making your own incense are readily found on the internet, and as with all magickal work, the more of your personal time, energy and effort you pour into the tools and products you use, the more effective the outcome. Making your own also allows for creativity in combining different ingredients and then tweaking the recipe til its exactly what you imagined.

The smoke from the incense can also be effectively used as a scrying tool. Review the Foundational Practice from last week:

Observation: Spirit Flows

Salt Water – The Combination of Water and Earth

yola saltSalt Water is often used as part of the purification process when entering sacred space. The combination of water and the mineral of salt from the earth serve to align those parts of self within as you enter into a sacred contract with the energies and realms you are about to experience. Ideally, if you can obtain salt water from the ocean (beach vacations are good for this) it brings with it the energies of all that has lived and moved upon and in its boundaries. The caution with this is to strain and boil it to remove any harmful bacteria and sediment that would be less than desirable to use as a topical purifier. It should then be stored in a clean airtight bottle or flask.

You can create your own salt using purchased Sea Salt and purified water. Mix a small amount of the salt in a small dish of the water. Stir it gently with your finger. To energetically “charge” the water:

Place your hand, palm facing down over the water. Breathe deeply calling forth your intent to enliven this water with pure and positive energy. Breathe into this intent and envision a stream of that energy flowing from your hand into the water. Hold this intention and allow the energy to flow for a few minutes. When complete, you may scribe an invoking pentagram over the top of the dish if you wish and make declaration of – So Mote It Be!

The Tools of Mother Earth
Herbs

herbsHerbs have long been used in ritual and healing practice. They are, after all, intimately part of nature herself and carry the life and light of the sun and moon’s energy. In celebratory ritual the herbs may be used in their entirety as altar décor, crushed to create an herbal incense or in a more elaborate process used as the ingredients in hand made tinctures and oils. The listing of herbs and their magickal and medicinal properties can be easily found on-line and in The Master Book of Herbalism by Paul Beyerl, which has long been a useful standard point of reference for witch’s and healers.

Herbs bring the raw energy of nature into our practice, and when ingested (food safe herbs only please!) as part of the ritual process can anchor that connection to nature we have. As part of our Lammas ritual, we have often made pizzas and infused them with specific herbs of our choosing to attract into our lives what we wish to harvest and have transformed in the months ahead. Eating these gifts is part of the ritual process and acted upon in sacred space is done in the witness of our Gods and Goddesses with focus and intent. ** See Below for a Cautionary Statement.

In fact, there is nothing more sacred, and mundane, than preparing a meal for those you love.  Adding specific herbs and ingredients that promote well-being is nothing short of pure magick!

Oils

OilsOils, being the highly condensed product of herbs, transformed through a process of distillation, filtering and carried within the fluid of oil are often used in as a tool of anointing tools or as a purifier for the magick worker or ritual participants. Fragranced oils have been used for centuries in the making of candles and are often used when doing candle magick. Their application to the candle intensifying the intent and the rubbing onto the candle itself representing the union of solid and liquid- earth and water- contained within the vessel that can ignite the fires of intent and will by air’s breath. Others have the oils added directly to the candle making process to provide a specific scent that could be released as the candle slowly burned.

Depending on what the constituent properties of the oil are, they can serve to awaken and stimulate the latent psychic senses as in the case of Mugwort, stimulate as a powerful aphrodisiac as is the nature of Rose oil or calm and center as in the case of Lavender. I do not wear commercial perfumes. Instead, I use body oils for their spiritual properties as well as their rich aromas. My favorites are Tunisian Myrrh, Tunisian Frankincense and one that is the combination of the two. Because I routinely wear this for ritual work, when I apply them in the daily mundane setting as my personal fragrance, I am immediately transported back to sacred space and the joys of being in that state of mind.

**A Cautionary Note: Please never ingest oils. Many are highly toxic if ingested or come in contact with the mucus membranes. Always use a carrier oil (almond, jojoba, vegetable) and dilute properly as many essential oils are very irritating and should not be applied directly to the skin without a carrier oil. Research into the cautions and properties of any oils you wish to use is a must and goes a long way towards effective use and safety. Please note that the same is true of many herbs. Not all that may be used are of the benign garden variety and making teas and tincture from these can result in serious illness. Always look at multiple reference sources if you plan in any way to ingest something other than a designated culinary herb.

Crystals

Crystals 2Crystals are the direct product of earth, its minerals and salts and the alchemical reaction of heat, pressure and gas upon those ingredients to create something new of color, shape and texture. Once formed, crystals are the most stable and organized compound in the Universe. The color of the crystal is determined by the minute presence of other substances, for example: iron produces reds – smoky brown = uranium and pink = titanium. Each stone has its own and very unique predisposition and carries its own signature of light, heat and density, depending on the conditions of its birthing place.

Crystals have a variety of uses and because their inherent nature is that of holding and/or amplifying energy they are often incorporated into the design of the basic magickal tools. Wands and staves are often tipped with specifically chosen crystals. Swords and Athames may have crystal inlays in their hilts. Chalices and cauldrons may have a specific crystal strategically placed inside the bottom which is only revealed after draining the liquid. And, pure crystal balls have long been the standard scrying tool as well as crystal pendulums.

Color, shape and the properties of attracting or repelling energies are the considerations when choosing what crystal to work with or use to adorn your tools. Check out the reading section for some good starting books and one which is more in depth as to the nature of crystals.

The Tools of Illumination
Candles

3-lit-candles-711128Candles are a staple ingredient of the Witch’s work. They create a specific point of focus; incorporate Fire into any working and can hold the energy that is being created and directed in whatever manner is desired. The heat of the flame is the symbol of the desire of will within. Candles are also representative of Light. The Light that is ignited from effort and desire for illumination. The potential of Light that is ever present in the dark. And, once lit the determined intent of lasting and permanent change.

To enhance a working the color of the candle is often a consideration. White, being the most generically used, a red candle can represent the Fire of Will or be used in accord with a celebration of a Fire Sabbat or Deity. Blue is used for healing and to represent waters and emotional depths. Black is often used for rituals of release, to represent the Goddess in her form as Crone and to connect with the ancestors. Green represents fertility and prosperity and abundance. Yellow relates to vitality, summer and the Goddess Brigid. Silver, is representative of the Moon and Gold the Sun.

Candle gazing has long been used as an effective tool for increasing visualization skills, for quieting the mind to allow for scrying and obtaining information and to light the way proverbially and metaphorically as processional or recessional as part of powerful ritual.

Another very cool aspect of candles is that they hold the memory of liquid and solid form. The process of making a candle begins with the melting of a solid form (the wax) by heating and infusing it with Fire. That wax becomes a liquid form that is then malleable enough to take on whatever shape it is poured into. This is water expressed and extracted from what was formerly solid. The liquid wax flows into the boundary of container and with the cooling by Air of its form, takes on the distinction of being a solid (Earth) once again. The cycle begins anew, as the candle wick is lit, feed by the Air of oxygen and its heat (Fire) transformation its solid boundary (Earth) into a pool of liquid (Water).

The Tools of Devotion
Statues

132_lugh_wWe are, as a species, highly visual beings. Having an appropriate statue of the Deity being honored or asked for assistance in magickal workings enhances the connection that may have already been made with that Deity in the form of meditation and/or devotion. What we see stimulates and provokes response and when entering a place of communion and interaction with the Gods and Goddesses, the visage of their presence makes a statement to that Deity that serious intent is proposed here and sends the signal to you that you are truly in the company of the Divine.

Now, let me clarify that you should not go out and purchase a statute of every God and Goddess you would like to work with. Not only is that costly, but let’s face it the opposite outcome would occur, in that you would have so many, that none could be more highly honored than another. Quantity definitely does NOT replace quality here.

A representation of a God or Goddess can be something as simple as a corresponding herb, flower, crystal or token that is compatible with that Deity’s energies. When you have arrived at a consistent working relationship with a specific Deity, then you may wish to consider purchasing a beautiful statue to grace a small altar area that has been dedicated as a devotional space for that Deity alone.

The Tools of Ecstatic Form
Bells/Drums
ritual_bell

I’m sure many of us remember standing on the sidelines as a parade went by and the feeling of resonance within our bodies when the band would pass with the thumping beat of the big bass drums. We responded from the core and felt completely shaken from the vibrations of this massive instrument.

Sound is all around us; albeit transparent to most as we go about our busy days. But certain levels of sound and certain vibratory frequencies within that resonance can transport us from a harried pace to a calm peaceful setting. From a place of inertia to involuntarily making us move and finally transporting us to a place of altered consciousness and ecstatic experience.

The ringing of a clear bell just prior to ritual, cuts through the energy and with intent serves to clear the space to be used of negative energy. It also gets our attention; and signals that something is about to happen. The same toning of a crystal singing bowl can, in addition to clearing space also help to raise the level of response and vibration within our own energetic fields. We feel the energy rising within and consciousness moves in accord with that elevation.

goddesswebThe beating of a drum attracts our attention in a more grounded and earth bound way. It is almost as though we can feel the heartbeat of the earth resonating outside of us, and we internally move to a spacious consciousness that mirrors the heaviness and weighty feeling of connection to the deepest core of Mother Earth.

Sound creates different energetic patterns and states of consciousness. Incorporating sound into ritual and workings adds another layer of awareness and potential for opening and manifesting.

The Tool of Great Price

ritual

When we use the word “Spirit” there are many associations connected to it. Spirit is considered the immanent All that is both the container and the component of everything that comprises the Universe. Spirit is the immanent part of ourselves to which the Soul returns with the lessons of the lifetime it has acquired as manifest (or other) form. The Spirit of our being is our true nature as a Divine emanation of form and the work that we do in the physical world contains a spark of our Divine presence in each of our endeavors. As we move along the path of the magickal worker, we draw upon this aspect of our being, albeit often transparently, as we become the conduit through which the magick may flow.

Spirit is the Fifth of the alchemical elements and is continually the undercurrent that flows through each of the four physical elements. Air, Fire, Water and Earth form the foundation upon which manifest and un-manifest work is done. Spirit has no specific correspondences or defined boundaries and categories, as it is the flexible container that expands, contracts, opens and closes in response to everything that surrounds and contains it. Spirit manifests in everything and is everywhere. To say that everything contains spirit is to try to articulate something that cannot be limited by words, analogies or truisms.

“ Spirit is often equated with the higher parts of our being. Those highly refined and spiritually attuned energies which each hold within. Just as we are part of and one in the same with the basic four elements, we are also part of the energies and elements that comprise Spirit….”

….excerpted from The Natural World: Lesson Two

When giving deeper consideration to what Spirit is, the physical You, as the manifest embodiment of the your Divine Spirit is the most important of all the tools you use. This tool is your own being. You, as the director, conduit and receptacle of the magickal practice you set into place are a constant. In any given situation or need, the tool of your own body and spirit is present. But, as with any of the tools of the Craft, claiming it as your own sacred vessel to work with and through comes only through exertion of effort, practice and will.

Most of the exercises that are done in preparation for magickal work are to prime and condition this vessel to serve optimally and fully in the working. Grounding and centering prior to ritual enables the body and mind of the witch to come to a meeting place of running the energy of earth and sky through the central line of the body. Visualization and meditation practices train the mind and emotions to calm and center and then to recreate in the space of the astral what has been stored and seen in the realm of the physical.

When we acknowledge our bodies, mind and emotions as Temples of the Divine and vessels that can be used just as the external tools we select we enter into a sacred agreement that forms the basis of change and transformation that are the cornerstones of the Witch’s Path.

As beings of the Five Elements, we hold the power of our physical form and the abilities of that form to use these physical expressions in the creation of sacred space and the workings of magick that are woven within it.

The Voice and Chanting

The use of the voice for creating sound as enhancement to the energy of ritual work is a customary practice among all of the major spiritual paths. We use the words of power in the creation of sacred space, our circle of art. We use the words of command and invocation or evocation to call forth the entities that dwell in the other realms and to invite Deity to be present. We use the words of power to speak our statement of intent and declaration of focus for the work to be done. We use our words to give oath to the Path and the Ancient Ones as we step into the place of initiation. It is through the use of these words that the energetic inroads or pathways are created and it is through these doorways that the mysteries are found.

Words in the form of chants are powerful energetic signatures that combine both the declaration and speaking of a word supported through the sound and or tone that is woven into that words energy. When we cast the circle and call the quarters there are specific words that are used to embody, through the vibration of sound, the intent of that ritual.

Toning the seed sound of “om” is an effective way of raising energy within yourself and then projecting it outwards to seal a working. Toning the seed sounds that relate to the chakras can allow a greater opening of the practitioner to more effectively use and receive energy during the working. The capabilities of the human voice and its use as a tool of magickal working are vast and limited only by the limitations set by the witch.

Movement

The physical body and the energy of movement that you can make with your body is one of the significant gifts of being an incarnate being. When we move we leave the imprint of our energy in the space around us. We create spirals, lines, ups and downs that interweave and if we could see these patterns we would be amazed at the impact our physical bodies make as we move through the world around us. The Whirling Dervishes move in ecstatic state in precise and purposeful movement, forging their communion with the Divine.

Being a former ballet dancer, I can personally testify to the transfiguring qualities of movement and the impact of being able to soar through the air, suspended for a brief pause of time. That energetic impact is not only felt by the dancer, is also the point of synchronized pause of breath between the dancer and the observer of that action. This is that magickal moment of “ah” when the movement is so precisely, effortlessly and seamlessly achieved that it seems to be the stuff of magick!

When we use our body as a tool to manipulate and draw the energy that encompasses us into various states of being we replicate the same type of patterns that are made when using an Athame to define the circle of sacred space or the Chalice to hold the energy of and define the boundaries of what has been placed within it.

These are but a few examples of the power held within your own form(s), both the corporeal manifest physical body and your Spirit. As you begin the practice of working with magickal tools and crafting your own magick, always carry the intention and awareness of what gifts you already possess, that can neither be given nor taken away from you. This is the tool of great price into which you were born and that will serve you well as you grow upon your path.

Foundations of Practice: Lesson #5-Observation

Foundations of Practice: Lesson Five

burning incense stick on black

Observation
Spirit Flows

Find a space where you will not be disturbed and is well ventilated. You will need a few sticks of your favorite incense, an incense burner and a small candle for light. Place the incense/burner in front of you so that you will be able to observe the smoke as it rises from the burning of the stick. It should be in a position so you do not have to look down upon it but rather, out in front or at eye level. Place the candle of to the side of the incense/burner to offer background light, but not close enough to be distracting to your gaze.

Sitting comfortably, begin by taking a few deep relaxing breaths and then allowing your breathing to establish its own comfortable rhythm. Soften your gaze and gently begin to take note of the spiraling upwards of the smoke from the incense. Imagine this stream of flow as being that of the energy of the element of Spirit within. Ephemeral, yet able to manifest itself through air and space. Make note of the patterns and weavings it takes as it moves in ascent upwards. Make note of the point of dissipation where its trail merges and flows into the transparency of space. Make note that although this smoke seems not to be present at points in its burning, the scent of the incense remains ad the pleasure derived from its aroma continues on.

Remain with this mindset for a time. Then, close your eyes and call to your inner screen your own physical form. See yourself clearly. Now just as you noted of the incense allow this image to soften as you allow the part of you that is Spirit to flow sinuously and smoothly. See your form shifting from solid matter to the refined state of flowing wisps of energy. Breathe into this image, acknowledging your nature as a being of all of the elements. Feel the power of this image and remind yourself of the impact that you have at the level of Spirit in all of your actions, regardless of whether that force is palpable and manifest.

Allow yourself to expand into these thoughts flowing and moving, coiling and reaching upward and outward. Make note of the sensations of this experience. Breath deeply and evenly into this expansion. Rest in this state of being, simply holding the energy of the space and your form within it.

When you are ready, begin the process of moving back into the density of physical form. Breath deeply, with intention to fill your lungs fully. Exhale into the sensation and weight of your physical body sitting in the physical space you have chosen.  Gently open your eyes and more than likely the incense will have burnt away, leaving only the sweet aroma of its now ephemeral presence. Make note of this in realization that this is also the sweet fragrance of presence that you leave of your spiritual self in all the workings that you do.

Take some time to journal your experiences and use this meditation of observation routinely. You will be surprised at what you begin to notice about your own spiritual imprint and the flow of movement it creates. And, always remember that the most powerful magick of transformation is to…

The Elemental Connection

Element Connection
The four basic tools of the Witch are aligned with the energies of the elements. They are the Athame, the Wand, the Chalice and the Pentacle and they serve to deepen the connection to the elements within the Witch as well as the energies that surround him/her.

For the sake of generalization certain of the tools and their elemental energies are associated predominantly with either the God or Goddess. In reality, however, the God and Goddess are present within each of the elements and have some component within each of the tools that serves as its own place of polarity. For example, swords are most often attributed to the God in representation of the phallus; the penetrating nature of their action (being surrounded by the womb of energy that surrounds the space in which the blade is cutting through as it moves). However, many Warrior Goddesses wield the sword as a modality of transformative action.

The Earth is most often associated within the scope of the Goddess and the gifts of her body; but under the care of the Horned God, all earthly life is protected and maintained. The Pentacle represents that grounding force containing all the elements, and these are found both within the province of God and Goddess.

Air – The God
Athame
Daggers
Swords

These tools bring clarity and inspiration of mind to the magickal working. They are the blades that cauterize, clear away debris and work as the seed implanted within the fabric of creation towards manifest outcome. The sacred Circle of Art is traditionally cast with the Athame. Air and its connection to the mind serve as the flow of inspiration and breath in the energy of the casting.

Additionally, the action of scribing the Circle and open the Quarter Gates makes use of the directed flow of energy that is achieved through the tip of the blade. The call to presence is “punctuated”, if you will by the piercing of the veils that separate the mundane from the magickal; the physical from the ephemeral.

Review AIR (Lesson 2: The Natural World)

Fire – The God
Wands
Staff

These tools serve to quicken and enliven the energy being worked upon. The wand holds the fires and will of the Witch. Unlike the Athame, which comes to a point of focal energy in outpour, the wand may direct the energy from either end. Both ends serve as terminals and often a wand will have a crystal on top and/or bottom of the length of the tool. The Law of Correspondence- “As above, so below” is affirmed by the energy of the wand, with each drawing upon the other in the wielding of its force. Fire waxes and wanes in its dynamics and so too the fiery energy attributed to the wand/staff work in this manner.

Review FIRE (Lesson 2: The Natural World)

Water – The Goddess
Chalice
Cauldron

These tools act as the container and womb of creative effort. They hold or contain the primal state of being as life evolves, heals and transforms. It is the bell of the chalice or cauldron that receives the varied materials that are placed within it. The energetic qualities are that of ebb and flow, the sides being the circle of continuum and the top open to the influx of the breath of inspiration. All spiral downward towards the base of manifest form and combine to create something fluid and moving in nature.

Review WATER (Lesson 2: The Natural World)

Earth – The Goddess
Pentacle

This tool connects with the grounding and foundational nature of earth and all the bounty that is offered in the natural world through the combined efforts of earth and the other three elements. In this form of the Pentagram we see the circle of eternity that binds within it the polarized quarters and energies of the four foundational elements. At its core center is Spirit, the place of synthesis, anchor and filter for all that moves towards this place of magnetism.

Foundations of Practice: Practical Experience Lesson #5

Foundations of Practice: Lesson Five

Practical Experience

A Simple Ritual for Tool Consecration

You’ll need a white candle and holder, a small bowl of purified water, a small bowl of sea salt, and your favorite incense. And * The tool to be consecrated *

Before you begin, determine the placement of the cardinal directions in the room where you will be performing the consecration. Place all the items below on a square (round will do as well) table.  In each corner of the table place the item that corresponds to that specific cardinal direction.

In the Northern corner, place the container of salt

In the Eastern corner, place the incense

In the Southern corner, place the candle

In the Western corner, place a small bowl with purified water

Light the candle and the incense

Begin by creating sacred working space in whatever manner you are accustomed. This can be simply envisioning the working space bathed in white energy that purifies and protects. Quiet your mind and focus your intent on the work at hand. When you feel strong and centered, begin your ritual.

Move around the table to each of the corners in turn. Beginning in the North, take the tool you wish to consecrate in your hands, and face north. Pass it over the salt, then take some of the salt crystals in your hand and sprinkle them over the tool as you declare:

Powers of the North, Guardians of the Earth, I consecrate this Wand and charge it with your energies.
I purify it this night, and make this tool sacred.

Now, turn to the east and, holding the tool in the smoke of the incense, say:

Powers of the East,
Guardians of the Air, I consecrate this Wand and charge it with your energies.
I purify it this night, and make this tool sacred.

Next, move to the south and pass the tool over the flame of the candle — be careful if it’s a flammable material.

Powers of the South, Guardians of Fire, I consecrate this Wand
and charge it with your energies.
I purify it this night, and make this tool sacred.

Finally, turn to the west, and pass your ritual tool over the bowl of water and sprinkle a few drops over the tool. Say:

Powers of the West,
Guardians of Water, I consecrate this Wand and charge it with your energies.
I purify it this night, and make this tool sacred.

Standing centrally and holding your tool raised upwards, say:

I charge this wand in the name of Old Ones,
the Ancients, the Sun and the Moon and the Stars. By the powers of the Earth, of Air, of Fire and of Water
I banish the energies of any previous owners,
and make it new and fresh.
I consecrate this Wand and it is mine.

Sit quietly, holding your newly consecrated tool and open yourself in a receptive manner to how the tool feels. What type of energy is pulsing in or through it? Does it feel cool or warm to the touch? Are there any visions that bubble to the surface? Does the tool seem to speak to you?  These are some of the ways we become more attuned to our tools, but don’t have any concern if you are not able to recognize any of these. Sensing energy and simply being able to sit quietly and listen for what is moving around us is not easily accomplished in these busy times. So, be patient. I can assure you that if your intent was clear in making connection to your tool the work was successful!

If there are no other tools to be consecrated, offer thanks to the quiet and support of the energy of your working space. If you created sacred space in a more formal way, be sure to clear that energy in whatever way you have been accustomed.

Repeat this ritual for each of the tools as you acquire them. And, by all means, if you wish to write your own words of consecration, please do so. The more you personally invest in the consecration ritual the more effective and more fully the tool and you will connect.

Overview of the Lesson: 5 – The Tools of the Craft

wicca-tools-1
Do not wait; the time will never be “just right.” Start where you stand,
and work with whatever tools you may have at your command,
and better tools will be found as you go along.

… George Herbert …

What are the Magickal Tools?

A Witch’s Magickal Tools are a necessary component of the interface that happens between the practitioner and the dynamics and efficacy of the energy of the working that is desired. The acquisition of your tools and subsequent use are important first steps in working magick. These are the tools that are used in ritual, can be incorporated into a meditation practice and assist in the training of the mind to direct the flow of energy and intent required to accomplish what the Will desires. We’ll begin by taking a look at the basic set of tools and explore some additional ones that are often used in a Wiccan practice in a later post.

The Elemental Connection

We acknowledge the presence of the alchemical elements within the physical and spiritual make-up of our bodies. We call upon these elements to enliven our will and move through us with goal of achieving a state of focused energy directed through the use of four basic tools. These are aligned with the energies of the elements and serve to deepen the connection between the outer and inner workings of the Witch.

The Tool of Great Price

The Fifth element is that of Spirit. This is the tool of your own being. You, as the director, conduit and creator of the outcome of the working move energy first through the vehicle of your own body and then extend and direct that energy outwards and through the tools you are working with. You are the vital ingredient in the recipe for making magick and become the sacred vessel that holds the imprint of all of your tools as a synthesized and purposeful whole.

Smells and Bells

Beyond the basic tools are those that work in conjunction with and act as enhancement to the work being done. These include besoms, incense, oils, candles, statues of Deity and varied instruments to name a few. We’ll take a look at the ways we incorporate some of these as staples in our Wiccan practice.

Foundations of Practice

Our focus in Foundations of Practice this month will center on the care and keeping of the magickal tools you’ve acquired; consecration and dedication of the tools and development of specific meditative practice to deepen your energetic connection to them.

Reading and Resources:

Check out the Suggested Reading this month for additions that will give you ideas for finding, crafting and personalizing your tools. The Resource section has a few additions as well, with recommendations for stores that carry a wide variety and quality products for magickal work.

Journaling
The Working Story

If you have already have some (or all of the basic tools) write down the “story” of where and how you acquired each and the feeling that you experienced the first time you used each. Add to your journal the “story” of any new tools as you acquire these.  Be sure to include the where and when. Additional notes can include any modifications or additions you made to them. If you performed a consecration ritual; write down the preparations made, the supplies used and what type of working action was performed.

If you are just beginning to start the process of seeking out your tools, begin by writing the vision you have of your wand, athame, pentagram or chalice. What type of materials would you like the tool to be crafted from? What color? Do some online searching to see the varied ways that these tools can be crafted. I have embellished and personalized some of mine further with the addition of a specific crystal or scribed a sigil (a magickal symbol that resonates to a specific energetic pattern) or design or pattern that resonated with into the wood of my wand or around the edging of my drum.

As you begin to work with these tools in the months ahead, record any changes you note in the way the energy is flowing between you and the tool you are using. Often the subtleties that are found in the energy your tool accumulates and your increased awareness of that interface and link when you work with it in a mindful way form the deepest connections to a specific tool. That tool may be your favorite one in the long run.

Practical Experience

This week I have prepared a very basic ritual that may be used to consecrate your tools. Feel free to edit, revise or rewrite as you are called. If you have all four of your tools ready to consecrate, you may do all in a single ritual. If you have already consecrated some (or all of your tools) it is good practice to routinely re-dedicate and consecrate them. Just as with any fine instrument of use, regular cleaning and fine-tuning makes the sound more enjoyable and effective.

A Pathworking of the Tools

This pathworking is intended to draw the energy of the tools you have been working with into a place of synthesis and resonance within your consciousness. Use this as often as you wish and be sure to record your experiences each time, as they will change and be a reflection of your progress.

Tools of the Craft: The Power of Four

imgres

There are many and varied tools that are used in the Wiccan practice of magick. These, in and of themselves are not inherently the “source” of magickal power, but work as conduits and points of focus for the magickal practitioner. Your tools become an extension of your energy, stimulate the correct resonance of visual/neural communication and open your receptivity to the magnetism of like attracting like. Now, that I’ve made that statement I will also say that you may often hear it said that there is really no need for any tools other than yourself in working magick; and this statement would be both true and false.

The energy, focus and intent are specifically your products, so if you did not have your tools with you and needed to perform a magickal working, improvisation on finding suitable “stand-ins” or using nothing but your own physiologic devices would be necessary. This is one of the reasons why we practice with our tools and work to understand their basic energetic signature and elemental affinity. Having this information goes a long way in providing the foundation upon which to build should all you have at hand is, literally, your hand.

In making the case for needing your tools (in addition to your physiology), we are symbol driven beings that respond to visual stimuli. The kinesthetic/tactile resonance and engagement of the senses in connecting to and working with a specific tool are vital components in synthesizing the wholeness of the actions of the working and the purposeful intent together. The magickal tools serve to stimulate you sensorially and energetically; with the goal of aligning your state of consciousness with the specific intent and focus of the working. Your personal energy, which becomes a vested part of the tools you claim as your own, works in resonance with the energetic state you are holding when the ritual or working is begun. You could think of your tools as holding your energetic imprint and the memory of all the workings you have done previously. When activated the tool becomes a library of resource for defining the appropriate energy needed then and you hold the library card that enables the book’s magick to be brought to life through its reading. Because your tools become so much a part of your magickal being, it is not unusual for a Witch to bring his/her athame into the ritual space (worn on the person of the witch) even if the coven’s or another’s tools are present that will be actively used.

An athame is easily carried in a sheath that can be attached to the cords worn around the waist and can be used should someone need to be “cut in or out” (using the athame to scribe (or cut) a doorway in the energetic fabric of the cast circle) of the circle during ritual. The wand may be placed twined within the cords worn over the ritual robes and readied to direct and focus a stream of energy towards a specific point during the ritual or working; if called upon. Many witches wear an amulet in the shape of a Pentagram and serves as their own personal space of connection to all of the elements as manifest form. In some group rituals, everyone is asked to bring their personal chalice to be used in the ritual celebration or working; rather than using the coven’s chalice. Having your own specific tools and using them regularly strengthens their intent.

So, what are these tools and how do you go about acquiring them? The basic set of tools for the working Witch align with the elements:

Air/Intellect/Mind = Athame, Swords or Daggers *

Fire/Will/Desire = Wands and Staves *

* in some traditions these tools are switched in their elemental assignment

Water/Emotion/Intuitive Nature = Cauldron and Chalice

Earth/Body/Foundation = Pentacle

There are several thoughts on the acquisition of your tools. Some believe they should be made (ideal if you are handy in this area). Others suggest that the tools may be purchased. And, others are of the belief that your tools should never be gifted from another. Personally, I do not agree with this last piece of advice as I see no difference in purchasing from a second party or being gifted from a loved one, friend or mentor. In all cases, your tools should be consecrated (or cleansed) and dedicated once acquired and before use in any working. Particularly, if you purchased or were gifted them. They have been handled and thus shaped by another’s energy and will, which even if benign is not in accord with your own personal energy. It is also for this reason that tools should not be shared, especially those that you work with often and have deep connection to.

The Athame/Sword

image001
An Athame serves as your personal knife. Traditionally this would have had a hilt (handle) that is black and a double-sided blade. Athames come in different sizes, lengths, and a variety of materials that are used for the hilt. When you select your athame, keep in mind how it feels in your hand. It should be neither too large and cumbersome – in that case select a sword – nor too small and light in weight. Think of it as an extension of your hand. It should be made of a metal that can be sharpened, as traditionally this was the tool used to cut herbs and place inscriptions on candles. The sharpness of the blade and its power to cut are powerful reminders to us as we work our magick of the responsibility that we hold within our potential. We have the ability to cut away that which is no longer needed, as well as the power, when exercised less than judiciously to harm.

image003

A Sword is not quite as portable as an Athame, and not absolutely necessary to have immediately. Occasionally, a circle may be cast using a sword, providing there is adequate space to safely wield it. It could be used in much the same way as the Athame, but because of its size and greater substance is considered a tool of great command. The energy projected is denser and generally of more ample volume. Because of the size and weight of most swords, great care and consideration should be given to selection. Make sure that the size and weight are such that you can safely handle it.

The Wand/Staff

image004

Traditionally, the Wand or Staff would be made of wood and crafted in some way by the Witch using it. Branches from a tree, particularly of willow or birch can be used to create a wand. You may select to wrap leather cording about it, stain it to darken the wood, embed it with crystals or place a terminated point of crystal at one or both ends. A larger, more substantial branch can be adorned in the same to create a staff. Since most wood tends to retains some moisture, unless it has fallen long before and sat in the sun, it is a good idea to allow the branch to dry out thoroughly at room temperature before affixing an gems, etc. to it.

Again, the length of the wand should be determined by what feels comfortable to you as you are holding it outwards. Traditionally, the length should be no more than the length of your forearm. The staff should be at least shoulder length in height and as thick as you can comfortably hold.

b5db9704d768412e4c955a98512e97dbThe Staff is often thought to carry the energies of both the sword and the wand. Elementally, a staff is the holder of great knowledge and wisdom (the airy property of the sword) and the fires of will and action (the fiery nature of the wand).

The Chalice/Cauldron

image008
The Chalice and the Cauldron represent the Goddess. They are the vessels that hold the mystery of life, the sacred elixir and fluids of creation and just as the feminine holds the seed of manifest potential within her womb, these tools carry that potential as well. In ritual work, the chalice is used in correspondence with the athame in the symbolic Great Rite. The chalice serves as the sacred feminine, the vagina and receives the blade of the athame in its form as the phallus or penis of the God.

The uses for your chalice are many. Charging water or other liquid to be consumed as part of an empowerment ritual within your chalice connects you to the powers of the creative womb. Pouring energy into the empty chalice and allowing it to build and then releasing makes for an intent of blossoming and expanding the spiritual gifts. Once you have mastered the connection of the chalice to the Divine Goddess you carry within, that energy will guide your uses.

image010

The Cauldron is the larger version of the chalice and is often used to hold bale fires, to hold water for scrying or to provide the vessel to combine herbs for potions and spell work. The cauldron has been one of the primary symbols for the Witch and is most often the vessel that contains the powers of healing and transformation shown within the myths of the Celts and their Deities. Cast iron cauldrons can be found in a variety of sizes, so the need to have a large and extremely heavy one is not necessary. I have a very small one which I use as an incense burner or for working spells that need the container of the feminine womb to germinate and grow.

The Pentacle

image012

A Pentacle is generally a flat disc of wood or metal upon which a pentagram has been inscribed and is enclosed within a circle. The Pentagram or five-pointed star contains all of the alchemical elements within its pattern and the circle encompassing it represents the never-ending cycles and the continuum of all that is contained. It represents the foundations that have been laid in working through those elements and the harmony and balance of the natural world has tool of the North, or Earth.  The Pentagram is a symbol of protection and as a tool of the earth and grounding can help to stabilize excess energy.

The Pentagram as a tool of grounding and magnetic attraction is often worn as an amulet in ritual space. In this way, the Pentacle is one and the same with he/she wearing it and is a reminder of their connection to all of the elemental energies present.

The Power of Four:

These are the four basic tools that are used in the Witch’s craft. They are a manifest representation of the alchemical elements, hold the energy of their wielder and are powerful energetic allies that work co-creatively with the witch’s intent and will. We’ll explore some of the other commonly used tools of the Craft in next week’s post.
