Her Song: The Song of the Ancient Earth

I.
I am the ancient Earth
I have been here millions of Years

The deep, deep peace that you feel now
Is the peace of the ancient Earth.

There is no need to hurry or rush
Go slowly and take my gift of peace.

I know you well, for you are very ancient too.
Every starborn cell in your body
Has been here since time began.
You are infinite and eternal
Spirit and Matter.

Every lifetime that you have walked this ancient land
I hold within my memory
I know you well
When you came I welcomed you
Beloved Friend
I remember your dreams and desires
Nothing is ever lost
I hold you and nurture you.

You know me well
I am the ancient Earth
Let me sing to you of days of peace
Milleniums when only the wind blows.

Beloved children
There is no need to rush
Experience my peace
It is the peace of the Ancient Earth

II.
And as I watch you Starborn ones
Come and go
I see and I feel how you flow with life

And I know when I feel at peace with you….

It is when you honor the river of life from God
When you understand the spirals
That flow from the Great Celestial Mother

Then you live with honor and respect
You honor the Elders and the Wise Ones
Human or animal or plant or rock

You know your place in the Universe
And you know that you give and receive in equal measure
You understand the flow of days in the spiral of time
And you give honor to those with many days
And you guide and lead those who are young
And you honor the changes and transitions in your life
Supporting these in others

And so you honor me and all my children
If you honor yourselves
But when you forget and you rush through life
In a panic of activity
Then we cannot meet
And I cannot give you my gift of perfect peace

Slow down, human children
And hear the ancient song of perfect peace.

III.
The ancient Earth is Male:
Matter is hard and unyielding…..
The Galactic center is Feminine:
Energy is light and fluid and flexible….

In their act of mating
Earth is enfolded and embraced
By the Galactic Goddess
The waves of their passion and ecstasy
Are the waves of light and energy
That you feel now……

You can share in their passion
If you find your own passionate
Marriage
Of Sky and Earth….

Keep your feet on the Ground, beloved ones
But reach for the stars….

Be like the Great Trees…..
Rooted in earth but reaching for Light…..

We finish our journey through the Natural World at our home base Earth. Many call this Earth Mother, Gaia. She offers us her food and willingly sacrifices her waters and lands to our needs, and asks only that we love and respect her in return. We see her creativity expressed through every leaf and flower; always pregnant with new life and always having just birthed what renews and replaces.

Gaia is the Goddess that personifies Earth. She is the Great Mother, as she holds within her body all of life on this planet. She is the natural extension of the thoughts of earth as being a fertile world that nurtures humanity. Wicca, being an earth/nature-based religion, at its foundation of philosophy views everything of the natural world as sacred and to be held in reverence. Nothing takes precedence over another in its nature of Divinity for everything is created from and an expression of the Divine.

If we look at the emerging thoughts of Wicca being not only as earth-based but cosmically-based as well, Gaia again holds true as goddess supreme. Her myths tell of her progeny which were planetary, stellar and Gods and Goddesses that ruled various aspects of the earthly domain. **

** Check out T. Thorn Coyle’s Podcast from Pantheacon Episode #29 -February 2010 and panel discussion of this subject.

To quote Tom Kenyon, Sound Healer and Shaman..

” The Earth has her own grid or grid-work of subtle energy channels. Some of these are called ley lines. They are conduits for the flow of subtle energy through Earth’s body, similar to your own subtle energy channels. But, of course, the energies that move through the Earth’s subtle energy channels are much more massive than those energies that move through your body. But there is, nonetheless, a relationship between your meridians/nadis and the ley lines of your planet.”

Her Gifts
of
Color and Light

Gaia vibrates and beams of color and light fill the panoramic view…

Color

The Earth produces an artist’s palette of color. The primary colors are red, blue and yellow. The secondary colors are green, orange and purple. And with the multiple variations of each we have the painting that is the natural world. We have taken from this palette and interpreted and routine make use of the various colors in our mundane lives.

We all know what a profound impact colors can have on us. Think how boring it would be to exist in a world that was nothing but values and shades of white and black. The varying scales of color (albeit originating from the spectrum of white to black) has been scientifically shown to influence our emotions, our actions and how we respond to various people, things and ideas.

Warm colors= stimulate
Cool colors= calm/soothe

These attributes are used all the time in advertising, alternative health practices, psychotherapy, decorating, and other ways to engage our senses, draw us in and at times persuade our choices. For example, Orange is used in restaurants, because orange increases the appetite. A good combination for restaurants is pale blue or turquoise and orange. A relaxed atmosphere and a big appetite are the perfect environment for a restaurant.

Some of the basic attributes of colors are listed below:

Red symbolizes: action, confidence, courage, vitality- Is used to energize and stimulate. Affects the heart by increasing pulse rate, and the muscles by increasing their tension. Influences vitality, and increases body temperature. Can be used to develop excitement and sensuality.

Orange symbolizes: vitality with endurance- The combination of the fiery heat of red and the strength and sustenance of yellow. Stimulates and relates to systems of digestion. Dynamic, but in a controlled way.

Yellow symbolizes: wisdom, joy, happiness, intellectual energy- Increases neuromuscular tone. Purifies blood, helps digestion, and has a cleansing effect. Strongly stimulates happiness, brings on a sense of security, as well as a strong feeling of well-being. Used for regeneration.

Green symbolizes: life, nature, fertility, well-being- Regulates the pituitary gland, fights depression, bulimia, and other psychosomatic conditions affecting the gastric system. Useful in calming the nervous system.

Blue symbolizes: youth, spirituality, truth, peace- Is calming and stimulates the parasympathetic system, reduces blood pressure and calms both breathing and heart-rate. It has anti-inflammatory and muscle relaxing effects. Fights both physical and mental tension and is used to assist in relaxation.

Indigo symbolizes: intuition, meditation, deep contemplation- A deeper shade of blue.
Purple symbolizes: royalty, mystery, spirituality- The opposite end of the rainbow spectrum- combines the cool properties of Blue and the fiery transformative powers of Red.

Brown symbolizes: earth, order, convention- A color of blending, the natural world and fertility.

White symbolizes: Purity, Cleanliness- The reflection of pure light.

Black symbolizes: Death, earth, stability- A composite of all colors and the absence of light.

Color is a vibration of light. In dim light, the color we see will seem different than in bright sun light. Sir Isaac Newton used a prism in 1666 and saw the rainbow of colors that we know as the spectrum. Showing that sunlight is not one color, the spectrum is red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet the 7 basic colors. This is also the scale used for the energy centers called the Chakras. (1.)

Light

Light is another experience of Gaia’s gifts. We thrive in light. We bathe in the warmth and light offered from the Sun’s rays. If deprived of light for unnatural; periods of times are mood and affect are diminished and impaired. Light is the medium through which varied colors are achieved. It is the angle and aspect of light that will give shade and color to what is being shone upon.

Just as Gaia carries the Light of Life within her being, we also have the spark of Divine Light that we carry to illuminate and draw us to a place of greater service. When using the intent of light and specific colors as focus for ritual and meditation we are drawing upon the natural gifts that surround us. Consider using specifically colored candles or altar clothes for your meditations. Wearing specific colors can enhance the energy we feel as we go throughout our day. And meditating on colors can open the door to specific energies. When we use these modalities we are also setting up the magnet of attracting similar harmonics and rhythms of the energies that we are sending intent towards.

Light, received through the lens of the eye, also affects the glands- Hypothalamus, Pituitary and Pineal. The endocrine system plays a major role for the body’s daily health. The glands release hormones directly into the blood stream and control all aspects of growth, development and daily activities. These glands, in addition to 4 others are those which are stimulated through spiritual practice and specific practices. These glands and their stimulation through the source of light also open the being to greater spiritual awareness.

An Experiential Color Visualization: Breathing Color

imgres

This exercise is one of imaging a color and breathing it deep in the lungs and filling your body with its specific energy. This method is often used in Chakra cleansing; imagining each chakra as a globe of its specific color in the most vibrant and clear form of that color.

Initially, when practicing find a space where you will not be disturbed and can set maximum focus on the exercise. Also begin with Red, working your way through the natural order of the rainbow scale outlined above. This helps in the visualization as we are naturally attuned to these sets of colors morphing one into the other as patterns of vibration and light. Allow your breath to establish an even and relaxed rhythm and when this is done see a veiling of tiny particles of whatever color you have selected forming directly in front of you.

Now, take a deep breath of inhalation imagining these particles coming in through your nose and filling your lungs with their light. As you exhale imagine this color flooding through every cell of your body. Do this for several more repetitions until you feel completely illuminated and filled by the specific color you are using. Allow this color’s energy to settle into you. And, engage all of your senses in what you are experiencing from this energy.

Breathe deeply and fully and simply allow the color to slowly fade as it is absorbed by your body. Make note in your journal of the experience. Only use one of the colors each day when beginning. As you become more adept at the visualization and familiar with the particular effects a given color has on you personally, you can call this technique into action whenever needed.

For instance, if you need more insight and clarity into a situation you may wish to work with the color Indigo. This color relates to intuitive insight. Or, if you need an extra energy boost, instead of grabbing that Red Bull, fill yourself with the color Orange for vitality and endurance. If you wish to have a more heart-centered focus fill yourself with Green, and if you wish to enhance your communications or promote healing, visual Blue.

Crystals and Minerals

Gaia holds within her bosom the gifts of Crystals…

51m4yj8AHlL

“A crystal is a solid in which the constituent, or ions are packed in a regularly ordered, repeating pattern extending in all three spatial dimensions. The formation of a crystal by a substance passing from a gas or liquid to a solid state, or going out of solution (by precipitation or evaporation), is called crystallization. The process of crystal formation uses – minerals – heat – pressure and gas. Once formed, crystals are the most stable and organized compound in the Universe. Color of the crystal is determined by minute presence of other substances. Iron produces the color red; smoky brown indicates the presence of uranium and pink reveals titanium and manganese”

Crystals have many and varied uses:

• Spiritual: connection tool for divination – psychic awareness – chakra balancing
• Therapeutic: healing either through directing healing energy through the crystal via a healing
• Healing through reaction to the energetic vibratory rate of a specific crystal itself
• Decorative; visual appeal = large geodes/spheres

In magickal practice, crystals are often used as holders and projectors of energy. Knowing the basic attributes of select stones can help in your selection of a set of basic working crystals. In putting together a starter set of multi-purpose stones some things to consider are:

• Types/ Color:
Rainbow set + black or dark brown
Quartz crystal- are generally multi-purpose and can easily be exchanged for any other crystal needed
Rose Quartz- connection to the heart – healing/ love
Clear crystal quartz- generic

• Size:
The size of a quarter is large enough to differentiate between crystals and small enough to hold

• Purpose:
What will these crystals be used for most often?

The suggested stones here are only a very small example of the possibilities but most of these are readily available. These provide a spectrum of color, chakra connection and attributes.

Red – First chakra (root) – Physical and survival matters Garnet, Ruby or Red Jasper
Orange – Second chakra (sacral) – Emotional matters Carnelian, Fire Opal, Fire Agate, Orange Calcite or Orange Jasper
Yellow – Third chakra (solar plexus) – Mental and will matters Citrine, Topaz, Amber and Sunstone
Green – Fourth chakra (heart) – Love and spiritual matters Malachite, Emerald, Green Calcite, Jade or Aventurine
Sky Blue – Fifth chakra (throat) – Communication matters Blue Lace Agate, Turquoise, Amazonite, Blue Sapphire, Aquamarine, or Azurite,
Indigo or Violet – Sixth chakra (brow) – Intuition and clarity matters Lapis, Sodalite, Amethyst, Sugulite, Azurite, Lepediolyte, or Kyanite
Violet or Clear – Seventh chakra (crown) – Higher spiritual understanding Amethyst, Clear Quartz, Diamond or White Agate
Pink – Matters of love, understanding, physical healing Rose Quartz, Kunzite -Pink marble, Pink Calcite, Rhodenite or Rhodocrosite
Black – Protection, grounding and cleansing Hematite, Jet, Black Tourmaline or Obsidian
White – Generic and universal in use White Celestite, Angelite Apophyllite, Selenium or Moonstone

Herbs

imgres

Herbs and plants of the Earth were the first medicinal and magickal tools used by the ancients. In all of the ancient cultures you will find plants being used as medicine, tokens of offerings to their Gods and Goddesses, for protection, fertility, as a source of nutrition and more. Herbs mixed with available resins were used as incense in the Temples and many of these same ingredients are used in today’s incenses. The use of the censor with Frankincense burning fully in churches began as a way to purify the surroundings where many would congregate particularly during the times of plagues and rampant disease.

Herbs were used in amulets and talismans as protective tools and to bring good fortune. Herbal teas could aid in issues of fertility and the poultice of herbs would soothe the fever and keep infection at bay in the case of wounds. Today we use herbs as seasonings to enhance the flavors of foods or opt for an herbal tea when over caffeinated or digestive disorders flare up. Most people are familiar with the uses of herbs as culinary tools. Some incorporate these into their practice of (w)holistic health. But, most witches have a working knowledge of herbs and plants and often choose to make the study of herbs and plants one of their points of focus to be used in workings, healings and of course, culinary magick.

There are a variety of ways to use herbs and other plant materials. In dried form, they may be placed in a small pouch, with other ingredients intended for a specific working or tool of protection. Fresh or dried herbs may be used in teas to calm, open the psychic senses or heal depending on the selection included. Sprinkled in a bath tub, they can be used to draw out toxins, soothe achy bodies or soften skin. Tinctures are made by combining herbs in a seal tight container with alcohol (vodka is often used) used as the carrier and set to “rest” for months before using for the medicinal qualities or as additions to magickal workings. A similar process is used to make herbal oils with the herbs placed in a carrier oil such as jojoba or grapeseed. These oils can be used for anointing in ritual, or as cosmetics to soothe irritated skin or bring about a healthy glow. In the culinary arts, oils and vinegars are routinely infused with a variety of herbs, drawing out the flavor of the herb and creating a new taste to be enjoyed.

Although obtaining fresh and dried herbs is as easy as going to your local supermarket or garden market, most Witches prefer to grow some of their own. You do not need an abundance of space in the country to have a useable variety of the herbs that you most frequently use on hand. A porch or windowsill of a city apartment will accommodate small containers and only requires some tender loving care. Many cities also have designated lots that are community areas for growing all manner of plants and work on a cooperative basis. If you have the additional space of a yard, dedicating an area of it to growing your magickal herbs is a way to get you connecting more deeply to the soil, sun and energy that goes into the growing. Harvesting those herbs that will not survive the cold provides an opportunity to bundle, hang and dry them inside, bringing the vibrancy and scent into your living space.

There are many resources available both in books, online and through workshops that can get you started with working with herbs. I have listed some of the more common (and more easily found) Herbs that you could use to start your exploration. This is by no means a comprehensive list nor are these the only properties for which each of the herbs may be used. As you work continually with a few of these, you will begin to connect to the energy and spirit of each of the Herbs and adapt your use accordingly with what you intuit to be the best herb of choice for the given task.

The Sacred Trees

TheGreenManAwakens_Fin760

Everyone has had a fascination for Trees at some point in their lives. This may have been as a child and the power felt in climbing up through the branches of your favorite tree. Or as a teenager, sitting with your boy/girl friend under a tree hoping for that first romantic kiss. If this fascination grew you came to see Trees, not only as a source of shade but as a living growing space of beauty that spread further and reached higher than any human could. And, if you were particularly astute in your observation you came to see that each Tree had its own sort of personality (energetic stamp) and changed in accord with the seasons flexible in its strength and glorious in its majesty. You may have also noticed that many of the natural groves and spaces of the Trees were being cleared to make way for urban expansion. The once green shady path that sat at the edge of the city was now concrete and bustling with stores and restaurants.

For one who follows a nature based Path, each Tree is a sacred and vibrant living energy. To the ancients, Trees were the embodiment of the forces of nature and a grove of Trees was often the preferred working place for magick, celebration and the honoring of the wild. The forest was the home to those animals that were held sacred to their Gods and Goddesses and within the forest the Green Man oversaw the protection of those contained. Certain trees held special significance for their ability to burn well as fuel for heat, cooking, building materials and weaponry.

“ In addition to this however, many woods also provided a powerful spiritual presence. The specific trees varied between different cultures and geographic locations, but those believed to be “sacred” shared certain traits. Unusual size, beauty, the wide range of materials they provided, unique physical characteristics, or simply the power of the tree’s spirit could grant it a central place in the folklore and mythology of a culture. Even our modern culture finds that certain trees capture our imagination. The mighty oak, the mystical yew and so many others are reminders of the power that trees have on our lives.” by Ed Collins (Sacred Celtic Trees and Wood)  and ….

” Druid tradition held nine trees as particularly sacred. Wood from the nine was required to light the annual Beltaine fires to usher in the summer season. An old song preserves the names of eight of the nine:

….Choose the willow of the streams, choose the hazel of the rocks Choose the alder of the marshes, choose the birch of the waterfalls Choose the ash of the shade, choose the yew of resilience Choose the elm of the brae, choose the oak of the sun…

The ninth is not mentioned but is presumed to be the thorn, or hawthorn, tree. The smoke from the sacred fire, called the need fire, would be used to purify croplands and cattle, and embers from the fire would be used to relight the hearth fires of every home. Each tree described in this chapter was prized for a different reason. All were sacred to one or more gods, providing an invaluable resource both for practical and magical purposes.”  by Jenifer Emick (Nine Sacred Woods)

We also are told of the magickal properties of the sacred Trees in The Witch’s Rede that you were given at the start of this course:

Nine woods in the Cauldron go, burn them fast and burn them slow.

Birch in the fire goes to represent what the Lady knows. Oak in the forest towers with might, in the fire it brings the God’s insight. Rowan is a tree of power causing life and magick to flower. Willows at the waterside stand ready to help us to the Summerland. Hawthorn is burned to purify and to draw faerie to your eye.
Hazel *-the tree of wisdom and learning adds its strength to the bright fire burning. White are the flowers of Apple * tree that brings us fruits of fertility.
Grapes grow upon the vine giving us both joy and wine. Fir does mark the evergreen to represent immortality seen. Elder is the Lady’s tree burn it not or cursed you’ll be.

* there are 10 woods listed, but Hazel and Apple share the lunar month that is referenced.

These Trees form the Celtic Tree calendar, a system of divination and time keeping that assigned a sacred tree to each of the 13 lunar (from Full to Full) months. The magickal properties and energies of that sacred tree were thought to permeate its cycle and could be used for specific types of workings, celebrations and honoring of Deity.

East Meets West

Tattvas

Although the Tattvas are not used in a traditional Wiccan path, the perspective they offer and the different layers of meaning they give to the more traditional attributes of the elements can offer great insight. I did, after all, say that this course would be a slightly different introduction to Wiccan philosophies.

Eastern Philosophy Meets Western Tradition:

The Tattwas were traditionally components and specified energetic constructs that were used within the Indian Tantric and Yogic teachings. Their introduction into the Western Magickal System developed through use in the Golden Dawn Tradition. Author, Donald Tyson offers commentary below:

“How they found their way into the magic system of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn would be interesting to know, since most of the techniques of this Order were Western in origin, but they formed an essential part of Golden Dawn training in meditation, visualization, clairvoyance, consecration of instruments, making telesmatic images, and other aspects of the Golden Dawn system.

One of the key members of the early Golden Dawn was Allan Bennett, who was primarily interested in yoga and Eastern methods of training. Perhaps he played a part in popularizing the Tattwas within the Order. Some aspects of the Golden Dawn system formulated at the beginning of the Order were allowed to lapse and were almost never used. This cannot be said of the Tattwas, which always formed a central part of Golden Dawn teachings.”

Astral/Etheric Forms of the Grosser Elements:

The Tattwas (or Tattvas) are primal energies that underlie the five elements of Hindu philosophy; Akasha or Akasa (spirit),Tejas (fire), Apas (water), Vayu (air) and Prithivi (earth). The term “Tattwas” means realities or states of being. Each of the five has a specific symbol or glyph used for visual and identification purposes. The use of these glyphs imprints the images within the mind, and once imprinted the levels of consciousness are also uploaded with memory of these symbols. This allows for greater and deeper connection at all levels of being.

Vayu/Air is represented as a circular sky-blue disk

Air Tattwa

Tejas/Fire is represented as an upright red equilateral triangle

Fire Tattwa

Apas/Water is represented as a silver crescent with its horns pointing upward

Water Tattwa

Prithivi/Earth is represented as a yellow square

image002

Akasha/Spirit is represented by an inverted black egg

Spirit Tattwa

Some Uses:

The Tattwas may be used in the same way as the traditional Wiccan elements as well as with some additional attributes. Because of the dense layers of metaphysical meaning overlaid within their essence and a higher resonance to the astral realms they may also be used as:

• Astral Gateways or portals through which consciousness may move
• Developing Psychic Energy Skills
• Focus images for Scrying or Divination

When using the Tattwas they are often placed one in the other to form specific combinations of energies. These are considered to be compound (coalesced) in nature. There are the 5 basic Tattwas and the possibility for 4 combinations of each. The secondary element represents the active energy; the primary element represents the background or environment within which the secondary expresses its nature. For example:

Air of Air Fire of Air Water of Air Earth of Air Spirit of Air
Air of Water Fire of Water Water of Water Earth of Water Spirit of Water
Air of Fire Fire of Fire Water of Fire Earth of Fire Spirit of Fire
Air of Earth Fire of Earth Water of Earth Earth of Earth Spirit of Earth
Air of Spirit Fire of Spirit Water of Spirit Earth of Spirit Spirit of Spirit

FIRE OF AIR

Slide1

Placing Fire within Air would represent the fires of mind or the catalytic effects of energy when placed within the realm of mind and intellect which manifests as the brilliant flash of inspired idea. In magickal practice, the use of Fire to enliven the properties of mind and thought can be applied to quicken and germinate the plans you have keep in the thinking stages and move them into a place of action and determination.

FIRE OF WATER

Tattwa one

Fire within Water is the electrical charge of the fires of will being expressed through the intuitive or emotional selves. In magickal practice, this is the igniting of the inner spark of our inherent Divine nature supported by compassionate love, understanding and the call to healing.

FIRE OF EARTH

Slide2

In Magickal practice Fire of Earth presents as the enlivening and active agent that moves what is immovable.  What we worked so hard to manifest in our lives can often become that which provides the largest challenge in our desire to change.  The same stability that is prized within the manifest and strengthening energy of earth turns stagnant quickly if a fire is not lit occasionally to prod it forward in new growth.

FIRE OF FIRE

Slide1

Wings beat furiously and strain
With expansion upwards
Quickening the spark of flame.

Blinding light flashes
And I move through
The flaming center
Of the sun and into
The black iciness of
The Enlightened Will.

A Tattwa placed within itself intensifies the elemental quality. Fire within Fire would indicate is energy that is focused and directed towards action, will and transformation. All outcomes and all applications are directed towards this singular action. Fire within Fire is the catalyst that exerts its dynamic will and produces the motivation that allows the scaling of great heights. This is the Phoenix rising.

Having some basic information of this system of thinking about the elements can open and enhance the perspective you have around the Traditional Elements of Wiccan Practice.

Meditations on the Elements:Foundations of Practice #2

elempen13-300x225

Begin each of these meditations in the same way:

Turn your focus and attention to your breath. Allow your consciousness to move with the rise and fall of your chest and the filling and release of the lungs. Continue in this manner for several breaths; allowing each to become softer, smoother and slower…

AIRAir Glyph

As you sit quietly in a relaxed state imagine yourself as a leaf being carried by a gentle breeze. You feel the weightlessness of your being and the gentle cradle of a pocket of air that lifts you above the ground. You move slowly and then a gust and burst of sir moves you more quickly as you float gently. The sensation is one of movement and buoyancy; currents of air weaving in and out as they carry you along. You relax even more deeply and enjoy this sense of freedom and lightness. Your breath in rhythm with the air that flows around you. Continue in this imagined state for as long as you wish, knowing that return of attention to your breath will bring you back to the space of physical being.

 FIRE

Fire Glyph

You find yourself sitting in front of a crackling fireplace. The wood is aromatic and the sputters of the flames creates it own background music. The flames rise and fall, dancing and weaving around the logs. Blues at the hottest point of burning and reds and oranges ablaze like the colors of a beautiful sunset. You are mesmerized by the movement of the flames and the many shapes and images that seem to be contained within. You note the transformation of solid piece of wood, to aromatic flame and then to ash; and think of the transformative powers of action and change. Continue to sit looking at the flames and the wisdom of change they offer.

WATER

Water Glyph

It is sunset and you are on a beach standing at the edge of the vast ocean. The dusky blue of the sky and the deep blue of the waters in front of you form a tapestry of soothing color. The white peaked waves, foamy and rising and falling as if in syncopation hold your gaze. These are the tides that ebb and flow within you as well. The resonance of your being and the energy and rise and swell of the waters stirs the emotions you hold within. The sheer beauty of the sun setting below the horizon of water’s edge and the anticipation of the rising of the moon bring a yearning and peace that cannot be articulated. Enjoy the beauty of this scene. The smell of the salty air and the rising of the moon reflected on waters of life.

 EARTH

Earth Glyph

You find yourself standing at the base of a giant Sequoia; looking up at a canopy of leaves and network of branches that stretches far into the sky. You can feel the palpable energy of this space and smell the loamy earth, ripe with life. You lean gently against the massive base of the tree and immediately feel the energetic connection between yourself and this grand giant. You can also feel and sense the many sights and years of change this tree has taken in. The connection of sinewy roots interweaving and dipping deep into the belly of the great mother; Gaia. Stand in this way for some time. Drink in the connection and energy pulsing through you and the tree. This is earth. This is your home. And you are steward of it’s care.

And end each of the meditations with:

Move your focus back to your breath. With each breath bring your awareness back to the rhythm of your breath and the rise and fall of your chest. Become aware of the physicality of where you are sitting or laying… your body pressed against cushion, chair or floor.

~ And when you are ready, gently flutter your eyes open ~

A Study of the Elements

element pent

Inspired by Air
Forged by Fire
Tempered by Water
Grounded by Earth
Guided by Spirit

Definition of Element…

• four substances that constitute all physical matter – basic qualities
• 4 phases of matter- solid (Earth), liquid (water), gaseous (Air), plasma (Fire)

The Four basic elements are Air, Fire, Water, Earth and Spirit serves as an additional element in the work of spiritual pursuit. The energies and components both at a scientific and esoteric level of the five elements are the fundamental ingredients contained within every structure of our Cosmos. Planets, stars, and all life forms are combinations of all the basic elements. They may have one or more of the elements in dominance, but there is always a thread of connection with those elements that are not as overt that enables the more dominant to exist. At a physical level the elements are all around us in the forms of the air we breathe, the water we drink, the food we eat and the energy that we exert to accomplish a task. When we are at our best as humans, the element of Spirit is at work. They are the components of the natural world that hold the fabric of the All together. Our bodies hold each of the five elements within our very being.

Air presents through my breath and the atmosphere that surrounds me both outwardly and in the realm of the mind. Fire comes full force in the heat of the sun and the energy provided by the foods, both cooked and uncooked that I eat. Fire also moves me to action as you cannot stay too long within its grasp before you burn. Water is present through the droplets of moisture in the air and the water that I drink as well as the water I carry within my physical being. Earth is the manifestation of the foods eaten and the ground upon which we stand. It is also the physical body that we carry. And Spirit comprises all of the elements that surround us. It is through spiritual practice that I can connect with Spirit. It is through the quiet moments of listening and simply “being” that I become one with Spirit.

Air

“All your thoughts are seeds of things
Which come alive on action’s wings.
Everything your mind’s eye sees
Is yours to change to acts and deeds.
Richard Ellis Simpson

Fire

“ The more you feed it, the more it grows high,
but if you give it water, it will surely die
Anonymous

Water

Water is the shape-shifter that reflects our inner feelings into outer form.”
Elemental Power by Amber Wolfe

Earth

“Earth is the element of sacred choice that comes with the acceptance of
personal, spiritual destiny. It is the full understanding of the forms we have chosen for our lives and for the life of our planet.”
Elemental Power by Amber Wolfe

The order of the elements is in accord with the calling of the energies of the elements after creation of sacred space. Within our Tradition we typically begin with the calling of the energies of the East, so that is the order I will use. Some traditions begin in the North, with the calling of Earth. You could think of this sequence in this manner:

East (Air) is the place of beginnings and the dawn, also ideas and thoughts.

South (Fire) is the place of the noon-day sun and the and heat of exertion of action or will.

West (Water) is the place of the setting sun, the end of the exertion of day’s effort. A time of calm and looking introspectively at the day’s events.

North (Earth) is the place of midnight. The time of returning to the place of creation of our goals; the time of sleep and fertility in the form of dreamscape and subconscious perceptions.

If we apply this to ritual:

We begin with creation of the thought or idea (East/Mind) that will be the focus of the ritual. We move to the place where that focus of intent can be activated by desire and will (South/Fire). This newly infused catalytic idea comes to the place of synthesis with the balance of emotion (West/Heart) and soothing of those fires that have been charged. And, finally all is brought to the place of Earth (North/Physical Form) with hopes of creating the foundations upon which the ritual intent may be brought into manifestation.

Pentagram Element Points

Although we identify five elements; think of the first four – air-fire-water-earth as the foundations (square) upon which Spirit is held centrally as the master synthesizer and Divine weaver of the four to create the fifth.

Glyphs of the Elements

Air GlyphFire Glyph  Water Glyph   Earth Glyph

In magickal practice , each of the five elements is identified by a sigil/glyph/symbol. Each of the symbols are derived from alchemy and serve to represent the attributes of the specific element in a short hand style. Additionally, each of the glyphs carries the energy of the element contained and described by the geometric make up of the symbol.

Correspondences

Each element also has a host of correspondences that are connected to it that help to additionally define its energies and attributes. These correspondences vary from tradition to tradition and many are informed by the specific cultural and ethnic influences from which they are derived. (ie: perceptions and affinity to Water will be vastly different for someone living in Hawaii and another in the Mohavi Dessert or the significance of Earth to our ancestors of agriculturally based societies and the city dwellers of today).

Many Wiccans identify with and use a Celtic pantheon and spiritual base for their magick. An example of how the elements would relate if using the cultural mythos and influences of the Celts is below.

The Celtic Connection

The Myth of the Tuatha De Danann (too-ha-day-dah-nan)

The Tuatha came to Ireland from four great cities, each possessing a great treasure. From Falias- the Stone of Fal; a stone of virtue and destiny, which cried out when touched by the rightful king. From Gorias – the Sword of Truth, wielded by King Nuada, and of those who deserved its stroke none ever recovered. From Finias- the Spear of Victory; reputed to be the spear of Lugh from which no battle was ever lost . And lastly, from Murias- the Cauldron of Plenty, which when offered by the Dagda, no company went unsatisfied. Each city sent its prize poet/teacher and from these poets the Tuatha learned their “magickkal skills” and “occult magick”. Each city related to an element and each treasure and poet enhanced that element:

City Time/Season Element Season
Gorias East Air Dawn/Spring
Finias South Fire Noon/Midsummer
Murias West Water Evening/Autumn
Falias North Earth Night/Winter

For more information about the Celtic Path check our R.J. Stewart

For now we will focus on their attributes and assignments within a Wiccan path. The table below gives a snapshot of keywords for each of the elements.  The list could go on and on and I’m sure that after this lesson you will have a few of your own to add. I have left Spirit out because it is the place of accumulated outpour of all the foundational elements.

Air Fire Water Earth
Mind Energy Heart Physical Body
Thinking Acting Feeling Sustaining and Manifesting
Breath Will Emotions Strength
Inspiration Initiation Intuition Informing

The elements are  immutable- just as the spirit or soul of mankind – it may change form , but the basic matrix of its properties remains the same,  not to be strictly thought of in literal terms, but rather as symbols of the possibilities transcending physical reality, the  labels and correspondences are simply  for the human mind to more easily digest, attune to and comprehend.

In spiritual practice the elements are used in a variety of ways. Prominently, they are key components in ritual; serving as the quarter gateways and at times the underlying principle of focus for the intent of the ritual. Quarter calls (more in Lesson Five)  invoke or call into ritual space the energies of each of the four foundational elements. Each of the quarters is opened and closed by inscribing a pentagram. As you saw above each of the points of the pentagram is associated with a particular element.  Typically, when you begin the ritual and call in the energies of the element, you will inscribe a pentagram that begins at the point of Spirit (see invoking below) and ends at Earth. This signifies a drawing into the manifest realm the energies and attributes if the Divine and Higher worlds. When ending the ritual and thanking and releasing the energies of the elements back to their realms the pentagram is drawn from the point of Earth (see banishing below) and returning back to the realm of the Divine.

Pentagram Element Points

pentsearth

Invoking:

SPIRIT drawn to EARTH infused with love WATER enriched by knowledge AIR readied for the will and action FIRE

Banishing:

EARTH moves back to SPIRIT purified by FIRE open to the inspiration/knowledge of AIR transformed by the love and intuition of WATER causing manifestation on EARTH

The Elements and their energies are used in spell work, divination and as meditation and tools of exploration can become very insightful tools for spiritual and personal development.

The Elements and the WICCAN Wheel of the Year

The Elements also relate to the Wiccan Wheel of the Year (more in Lesson 4). The diagram below shows how the four elements are mapped to the Wiccan Wheel.

Wheel of Elements

The Laws of the Elements

Many years ago I came across these Universal Laws as they relate to the four basic elements. It may seem odd to equate the elements as following certain “Laws” particularly in the semantics of that word and its normal connotation. But, everything must follow some sort of order and structure to be successful (albeit, sometimes that order appears to be the most disordered mess, it is still order nonetheless). This is also true of magickal workings. There are specific laws, rules (whatever word you prefer) that govern the order and structure of the Universe and its workings. These are but a few of those and I offer them now as food for thought as you move through each of these elements. Some are overt in their relationship to a specific element and others are a bit more occult (hidden) in their meanings.

AIR

• Law of Requests (AIR)

Each thought and idea we have is processed through at least three levels of concept. This occurs to activate the three levels of mind. These are:

  • Beta (awakened/conscious)
  • Alpha (subtle/subconscious)
  • Theta (expanded/psychic)

Magickaly, we are continually making use of these states of awareness and fine tuning each to fit the needs of what outcome is desired. The psychic and expanded state of Theta gives more clarity and definition to what is being brought forward in awareness. The subconscious level adds additional dimensions of understanding and perception to what has bubbled to the surface. And, when it is finally brought to the level of conscious awareness, the thought, idea or inspiration can be further worked upon to bring into reality or discarded as the stuff of day dreams.

• Law of Challenges (AIR)

This aspect works as the filtering process for those ideas, and visions, that move through the varying states of consciousness as above. If we do not provide test, checks and balances for what the breezes of air bring to us, all manner of unwanted things would constantly be bandied about our being. In magickal working it is this process that gives credibility and viability before the energy of mind can be brought to a place of fruition.

FIRE

• Law of Polarities (FIRE)

When we speak of polarities, there are many different examples that could be given; male and female, light and dark, negative and positive to name a few. When we do magickal workings we draw upon the nature of polarities to bring a state of action to that working. If there were no darkness we would not know how to define the light. If there were no negative action, the desire towards the positive would be non-existent. The element of fire is aptly described by this Law as one of its primary functions is to stir up, to excite, and thus to transform and potentially transmute that which was being worked upon. When we call the energies of Fire into our workings, we are automatically putting in place the potential for action to occur. We are forcing ourselves to move beyond a place of inertia and undefined focus of intent to catalytic change that will be either the positive or negative charge that is needed for desired outcome.

• Law of Cause and Effect (FIRE)

This is the natural by-product of working within the realms of polarized action. For every action, there is a reaction. Thus, for every cause there is an effect. The measure of that effect is usually in keeping with the amount of will exerted, although the comprehensive out-picturing of that statement is not always apparent. This is typified in the caution to “be careful what you wish for”.

WATER

• Law of Rebound (WATER)

Think in terms of the natural ebb and flow of the waters of the oceans, or the fishing line that is cast out and as result of the rhythmic process of moving forward and then rebounding back is carried on the waves. The element of water (emotions) is very much like this principle. What we send out emotionally and intuitively always bounces back towards us, something sonar like with the directional apparatus of bats. They are blind and in the dark, yet they find their way; largely through intuiting it by using a scientific and physiologic adaptation. In magickal workings the intent is very important, and as we have discussed intent must be fueled by the Fires of Will to be viable. But the true tempering of the metal occurs in the process of placing the heated metal in water. This is the place of rebound, where what was heated and contracted can expand and cool to fill the space between. If this cooling did not have the dynamics of the heat to rebound from and reestablish its form it would eventually melt and dissipate.

• Law of Equalities (WATER)

This brings us to the Law of equalities. Not necessarily balance, but at the very least a common ground of meeting where flow and expression can occur. This common state of equanimity is where the lower rises to meet the Higher and the Higher descends towards matter. This is the place where the emotions and the mental have dialogue with one another and the gateways to the depths of true wisdom can be passed through. You can also think of this as the element of water being the interface or interpreter that allows greater and deeper levels of understanding and communication to be achieved.

• Law of Balance (WATER)

And, finally through the efforts of resistance causing return (rebound) and the correct interface of communication (Equalities) having been achieved, the work can be held within a state of balance. Not a balance that indicates all sides having equal share, but the balance that occurs when despite their being a greater amount towards one end of the equation, all works in harmony because there is precisely the right combination of differing ingredients to produce a successful outcome. In this form of balance it is the quality of the contributing energies vs. the quantity that are of the utmost importance. And, in magickal pursuits, achieving that perfect state of quality is the key to unlocking the Limitless Divine.

EARTH

• Law of Abundance (EARTH)

The physical earth offers food, shelter and abundance in the form of home and all that is needed for the survival of its life. We can similarly apply this to spiritual matters. We, as divine beings, are provided with and have access to all that we need. The only requirement is that we make connection to those places of abundance and fertility within ourselves.

• Law of Summons (EARTH)

In response to this abundance we are also capable of attracting more into our lives. We have the power to call forth that which we desire and will to be. Although many would not view it from this perspective; particularly when what we are attracting appears to be negative; but it is our own thoughts and feelings about what we actually do need vs. what we “want” that sets into motion the return. This is why in any magickal working, the first rule is to be very careful about what it is you are asking for or wishing to bring into your realm of earth and manifest realm.

The Elementals

Air- Slyphs – Monarch is Paralda

Fire- Salamanders – Monarch is D’jinn

Water- Undines – Monarch is Nixsa

Earth- Gnomes – Monarch is Ghob

The Elementals are the beings that comprise the pure essence of the element they inhabit. They could be considered the etheric manifestation of that element’s energy and as such are not easily directed in what human will requires of them (more in Lesson 11). When we work with the Elementals of a particular element we are calling forth the guiding forces that direct that energy. As such, Elementals can be difficult to work with and should be approached through working with only the utmost of care and respect.

To begin our exploration, let’s send an invitation to the elements to be present in our studies, our workings and our life……

Overview of the Lesson: 2-The Natural World

wonderous-earth-2The Natural World…

Is what surrounds and embodies us. Some of its realms are seen and some are contained within the unseen realms, but regardless of their visibility they have tremendous impact on us. We are, after all, spiritual beings incarnated into physical bodies. The building blocks of this Natural world are the elements. They are the components of the natural world that hold the fabric of everything together. They are also within every living thing. Our bodies hold each of the five elements within our very being. Everything is a conglomeration of these five; although one or two may be more dominant, each are dependent upon one another as some thread of the others to support its more dominant nature . Highlights of what is ahead for this month include:

A Study of the Elements:
We will begin our exploration with a look at the Five Elements (Air, Fire, Water, Earth and Spirit). The energies and components both at a scientific and esoteric level of the five elements are the fundamental ingredients contained within every structure within the Cosmos. Planets, stars, and all life forms are combinations of all the basic elements. They may have one or more of the elements in dominance, but there is always a thread of connection with those elements that are not do overt that enables the more dominant to exist.

Air:
I am Air and my gift fills your lungs
I move and flow carried on
What cannot be seen
And I hold within my mystery
The inventive mind that
Ignites the flame of creation.

How will you breathe my inspiration?

Fire:
I am Fire and my will is final
What I lay hand to is forever
Changed and transformed
I bring the promise of new
Growth and I hold within
The embers of my mystery
The spark of Divine Will.

How will you answer my call to action?

Water:
Prisms of light are reflected
On my flowing surface
I ask you to wax and wane
In all of your endeavors
And I hold within my mystery
The healing touch that offers
The gift of true gnosis.

How will you open to my floods?

Earth:
I am earth and the power of memory
I hold the memory of time
Before manifest form
I hold within my mystery
The key to awakening
From the space of silence.

How will you honor the sacred vessel that is your body?

Spirit:
I am that I AM
All is my power
Nothing is my will
I am limitless and
I am finite in my plan
I hold the mystery that
Is unknown and the
Seeking of it is my desire.

How will you live your life of humanity?

East Meets West- The Tattvas:
Although the Tattvas are not used in a traditional Wiccan path, the perspective they offer and the different layers of meaning they give to the more traditional attributes of the elements can offer great insight. I did, after all, say that this course would be a slightly different introduction to Wiccan philosophies.

Gaia- Our Mother:
She offers us her food and willingly sacrifices her waters and lands to sustain our needs, and asks only that we love and respect her in return.

I hear you call me
The leaves speak my name
You hold me as I move
On ground that is strong
Fertile and ripe with life.

The water of your rains
Cool and soothe and
The bite of winter’s snarling mouth
Moves me towards fires
That are warm and fragrant
With the woods of your offering.

The winds move in lively rhythm
And when you are angered
They move from your exhale
Like great beasts scattering
All in their path.

The wing of songbird beats
Out the tune that awakens
You from sleep’s hold
And lion paces back and forth
Treading the wrinkles
Of your weathered flesh.

Master of winter bows
In your presence as you
Shake free of his frigid grasp.

The solar Lord ignites
Your fires deep within your belly
As the natural world trembles
With passion’s release as
Sun and earth unite
In summer’s heat of
Passionate embrace.

All lay ripe and ready
Your skin once more to shed
And deep within the belly of
Your being the call to verdant life
Shall lay dormant once more.

Though in slumber,
You may appear to be
You are ever watchful of
Caretaker and steward’s hand
For the potency of your life
Is in response to those who
Honor and respect your
Continuing cycles.

Foundations of Practice this month will include mediations for each of the elements to be used as a means of connecting more fully to the specific element of study, journaling and more.

Reading and Resources:
Be sure to take a look at the Suggested Reading for select topic-specific additions and on the Resources page you will find a link to a series of very informative podcasts by T. Thorne Coyle. The podcast is called “Elemental Castings” and podcast is focused on discussion of a specific element via interview with some very well respected members of the Pagan community.

So, get your elements moving and open up your Mind. Fire up your determination and will as you Feel your way through the process and Ground yourself in the foundations of your physical world; and you may just find that inner spark of a bright Spirit within.

Blessings Bright …

Journaling

My Elements

Your journaling this month will provide you with opportunity to examine what your perceptions of the Natural world and the Elements are. This will form the foundation of your understanding of the elements. As we move through the month, some of these perceptions will change, will grow and will be affirmed as your personal truth. This is after all the work of the thinking Witch. To assess, formulate opinions, test those opinions and then stand strong, recalculate or abandon all together what we believed to be true. This is the growth process that keeps the Craft evolving within and these are the tools that by our own hands help to make the many definitions that encapsulate the Wiccan Path.

Some thoughts to get you started:

  • Begin by thinking about what your personal definition of the “Natural World”. What is included in that definition?
  • How you would describe each of the elements?
  • How do you feel these elements are expressed in the Natural world?
  • How do you feel these elements are expressed in the Mundane world?
  • Do they differ within the Spiritual world? If so, in what way?
  • Which of the elements do you feel the most affinity for? Why?

Meditation

Meditations on the Elements

This week’s focus is on settling into and connecting to the elements in the quiet space of your mind’s eye.  You may do these meditations in whatever order you wish, indoors or outside and as often as you wish.  Feel free to allow your own knowing of the element to create its own meditation as you progress in the work.

Observation

The Elements in Action

This exercise will train you to become more aware of the interaction of the elements as you move through your daily routine. The more connections and points of reference you can make to the varied forms of the elements, the deeper your understanding of the many layers of complexity that each hold. Before you know it, you will automatically be making the points of reference, internalizing these and have them as the stores of energy that you may later draw upon in your magickal workings.

Sitting outside on a warm, sunny day pick something in your eye line to observe and focus your attention on:

AIR: What thoughts does this observation bring to mind? Are you thinking about this observation in a state of rational mind or just simply allowing the varied thoughts to present themselves in whatever manner they wish?

FIRE: What action is inspired by what you are observing? What action is taking place as you are observing? Does it make you want to join in, continue to sit and observe or walk away?

WATER: What feelings arise as you watch the scenario unfold? What emotions are prominent and what emotions are you holding back?

EARTH: What is the physical setting and concrete reality of what you are observing? What would some descriptions be in creating a solid picture as you retell the scene?

SPIRIT: Think about the range of experience you have had in your period of observation moving through mind-will-heart and physicality. Now, create a synthesized perspective of your experience. Use all of the elements in a way that reflects the story with the most clarity. Reflect on both the positives and negatives you observed and then try to balance them in a way that provides a clear, concise interpretation. This final synthesis is the action of Spirit- coalescing and combining those necessary components of each of the four foundational elements to create the more refined essence of their sum total.

For at least one full week each day make a note of one thing new that you observe that you never noticed before. It can be something as trivial as noting how long a light takes to change or something more covert such as the first bud of a flower or plant. Each day try to “see” something new. Becoming more aware of the little details that cross your path each day, you become more aware of the interconnectedness of all things. You will also more clearly see what effect you may have on that minor detail, or how it may affect you in ways you were unaware of previously. Be sure to record your experiences in your journal.

Physical Application

Breath work is a staple of magickal practice. Control of the breath and knowing when and how to use the levels of energetic dynamic that can be achieved by breath begins with the basics of learning how to breathe correctly. Energy follows awareness and is move along its current of flow by breath.

The Elements and The Four-Fold Breath Technique

Now, that you have gained some first hand experience with the elements, it’s time to apply that experience to breath. In the last lesson we began the practice of the Four-Fold breath. In this iteration of that practice we are going to actively focus our intent on the subtleties of the elements as they present in this practice.

Obviously, air is fully engaged in this practice, but what about the other elements?

AIR moves into your lungs on the inhalation and begins the cycle of flow.

FIRE or energy is produced as the lungs process this incoming flow and the neural impulses respond to oxygenation.

WATER creates the pattern of ebb and flow that occurs in response as the cycle of taking in, and exhaling out is stimulated. Oxygen moves throughout the body, flooding and filling it with life-giving breathable air.

EARTH is the sustained and renewed product of our body, bringing about a relaxed and even breathing pattern that enables every autonomic function to healthily and fully operate.

And, SPIRIT is the affirmation of life that as we breath maintains our physical experience held in the sacred space of the Divine.

With these analogies (and I encourage you to formulate your own to fully understand the dynamics of this elemental breathing) in mind, begin a newly informed practice of the Four-Fold breath.

Begin by sitting in a quiet, comfortable setting.
Focus your attention on the rhythm of your breath. As you begin to feel your body relax focus your attention more fully on your breathing.

Take a full deep breath- inhaling for a moderate count of 1-2-3-4
Hold this breath for a moderate count of 1-2-3-4
Exhale for a moderate count of 1-2-3-4
Hold at the completion of exhalation for 1-2-3-4

You may continue to breathe in this manner for several sets of the four. Eventually, your breath will establish its own rhythm and attention to counts will not be necessary.

Tips: Try to maintain an even steady rhythm of in-flow and out-flow. This allows greater ease of holding at the fullest point of expansion and holding again once the breath has been expelled.

Do not be surprised if the first few attempts bring inability to hold at the peak and base of release and intake for the full 4 counts. Depending on the state of relaxation and possibly any additional pre-existing respiratory conditions, you may fond this difficult at first.

Usually, after several times of practice and with each practice any rhythm, flow or relaxation issues decrease and then generally fade. Remember, for some this may be a new type of physicality and awareness of breathing that is normally left on “auto-pilot” as we go through our day.

End Note:
If you have been following the exercises offered as Foundations of Practice, you are beginning to form an outline of committed work towards a specific goal. The shift in your perception gained in Lesson One’s Foundations and now a deeper understanding of the Natural World and the Elemental components sets the wheel in motion towards raising the bar on your experiences. Keeping this work in mind as you move through your mundane affairs and finding ways to incorporate the lessons learned are the initial steps taken in living a magical life 24/7.

Great job on your dedication and achievements thus far!

In-Spired Magick

spiral_of_lightblog
When we are mentally inspired our thoughts come rushing in like a gust of wind; often moving so quickly that we have to pause for a moment and breathe into the excitement of downpour or we miss some of the fine points. Our breath quickens and our heart races at the potential of what has been intellectualized and refined by mental process.

When we are emotionally inspired our feelings flow throughout our being often in a rhythm of ebb and flow similar to that of the ocean’s tides. We breathe into the momentum and allow ourselves to either languish in the beauty of these emotions being gently carried along or anxiously push the unsettling feelings quickly through flooding our sense of reason or logic.

When we are physically inspired, we run and dance; exercise and eat heartily enjoying every bite and physical action. We savor the manifest form we have been gifted and marvel at its capabilities and the complexity of its creation. We breathe deeply to renew and sustain our life and fill our lungs to capacity so we may exert more effort where needed or quiet the rapid breaths of over-exertion.

And, when we are Spiritually inspired we feel at one with the world around us. If this awareness is expanded even further, we breathe into our subtle bodies, each in turn connecting us and resonating with a deeper aspect of our being and the subtle planes. We offer the sigh of release and surrender to the offering up our service and devotion and breathe fully and intentionally into the Universe as co-creator and creation itself.

In all of these states of inspiration the key word is – Breath. We breathe automatically in our mundane lives. Requiring this exchange of air to survive. It is a seamless and transparent action that supports and moves in synchronicity with all of our physiological functions. Applying the same force and flow of breath as we move through ritual and magickal working in an intention-filled way provides the vehicle that carries the energetic sparks that serve to quicken and enliven towards manifest goal.

In-spiring magick is not simply the cerebral activity of having high regard for specific types of magickal practice. It is not simply how you feel and what the intent is for the work. It is not the actions and steps that are taken in the physical gesture of working magick and ritual. It is all of these things that are first primed and called into action when you take that initial inward breath before the exhale of your intention. This breath calls us to attention that something out of the ordinary is being undertaken and that all parts of my physiological and etheric make-up are required to engage and flow in accord with one another.

We are all familiar with the adage, “Energy follows awareness” and it is with this thought in mind that if we take a step further, breathing establishes the point of awareness that then attracts the energetic flow which is moved by the rhythm of breath. That awareness begins in taking note of how you are breathing. In meditative and contemplative work, breath is the start of the process of turning within. Taking notice of the rise and fall of the chest. The rhythm and pace of your breathing and bringing it into alignment with the space in which you are sitting and in accord with the flow of energy that surrounds you.

We often overlook the need to breathe as part of our magickal practice. We participate in ritual and are closed off to the most organic of energetic flow because we forget to apply the force of breath at the appropriate moments. Over the years have come to know the value and need for incorporating breath work into my spiritual practice. Learning to control the breath correlates with learning to control energy. One of the more basic exercises to use as a preparation tool for meditative or ritual working is the Four-Fold Breath*. The rhythm you are establishing in breathing this way creates a foundation upon which you can expand as needed for the working at hand.

Practical application begins with being consciously aware of breathing into your actions at all levels. The next time you are interacting with another, give pause and take a moment to breathe before answering the question asked. The next time you are sitting in a public space, give pause and take note of how you are breathing. Are you anxious? Are you feeling calm? And, then breathe into the energy of the space and enliven your own personal space with whatever positive intention of change or maintaining this energy that you wish.

These are some ways to be more attentive to the application of breath in your Spiritual and Magickal workings. To begin your meditation work, take note of your breathing and as you move through the various stages of consciousness breathe into each sending out your intention infused with life’s breath. If you are tasked with the casting and calling of the quarters in creating sacred space breathe into the scribing of the sacred circle. Infuse the energy you are using with the intention-filled breath of movement and upholding. As you stand before the quarters, take a deep breath in expanding and calling to attention all of your subtle bodies and as the words of opening pour forth send the will and force of that breath in request to those unseen to be present.

As you work in this way and become more aware of the impact of breath in all of your endeavors, the physical transparency of life sustaining breath and the integration of that same enlivened breath for magickal practice will become one in the same. After all, this is the goal we aspire towards and why we walk this Path. The goal to move harmoniously in the unified space of the mundane and the magickal – 24/7- 365 days a year. So, Just breathe!

The Wiccan Path

Slide1

The Wiccan Path is one of initiatory experience. Each step taken upon this path leads towards greater understanding of your own Divine nature, which in turn brings a greater understanding of the natural world and the Divinity that exists around you. By definition, initiation is an act that sets in motion some course of events. In the case of a spiritual pursuit, initiation opens the seeker to embracing their spiritual nature as a support and foundation to their mundane nature. The spiritual path of a Wiccan (Witch) is one filled with the beauty of the natural world and the mystery of the world within each of us. The path leads to the subtle realms of the astral – the far reaches of the cosmos – and the shadows that lay hidden and buried within each of us. We practice the Craft of the Wise, which in ancient times was the gifts of the healers and the seers whose ability to see far and wide and enter so completely into alliance with the physical natural world was depended upon to ensure viable crops, healthy livestock, fertility and a sustainable life for those in whom the wise lived. In ancient times the knowledge was carefully passed in the style of oral tradition, the mysteries given ear to ear hand to hand. Although many of those traditions, rituals and wise ways are lost to the modern practitioner of Wicca, many of the core principles remain, having evolved just as we as a people have evolved, become modernized and have at our fingertips ways of communicating large volumes of information. The information provided in this course of study barely scratches the surface of what is a uniquely complex and diverse spiritual path and that to a large degree can only superficially claim its heritage in the ancient practices of which we truly know so little. Wicca is rooted in the experiential, and is a way of life that is not limited by lack of sacred space, tools or financial resources. From the Wiccan perspective, all of the natural world is sacred space and the greatest tool of working is our physical nature holding the pure essence of each individual’s Divine spirit that is priceless in

Ritual and Celebration

Wiccans use ancient and modern ceremonies, rituals and shamanic practices to attune themselves to the natural rhythms of nature, the world, and the universe as a way to commune with this divine force. In particular, the lives and daily activities of the ancient peoples were very much dependent upon and intertwined with the position of the sun and the agricultural cycles that were dependent upon movement throughout the year. The Witch’s Wheel of the Year is a reflection of those needs. The calling forth of the Light of the newly birthed Sun at the time of the Winter Solstice ensured that there would be a new cycle of planting, sowing and reaping the much needed harvest for continued life.

The Sabbats (Solar Celebrations) of the Wiccan year are eight in number. Four correspond to the astronomical transitions of the equinoxes and the solstices. These are the Vernal (Ostara) and Autumnal Equinoxes (Mabon) and the Winter (Yule) and Summer (Litha) Solstices. The other Four, or cross quarter days are those that mark the time between the equinoxes and solstices. These were the dates of celebration of the progression through the changing of the seasons and the preparations for the times of transit from one season to the next. These are Samhain (the Witch’s New Year) – Imbolc (February 1) – Beltaine (May 1st) and Lammas (August 1st).

There are many overlays that are associated with these Sabbats, the most prominent being the cycle of the God and Goddess as they move through the stages of birth- fertility- harvest and death. In this way, the physical world and the Divine world were mirror reflections and the offering of devotion and celebration of one ensured the continuation of the other.

Deity

The God, Lugh and The Goddess, Brighid

Depending upon one’s point of view, Wicca can be considered a monotheistic, duotheistic, polytheistic, henotheistic religion.

• Wicca is monotheistic (belief in a single deity): Some Wiccans recognize a single supreme being, sometimes called “The All” or “The One.” The Goddess and God are viewed as the female and male aspects of this single deity.
• Wicca is duotheistic (belief in two deities; a.k.a. rarely as bitheistic): Wiccans often worship a female Goddess and a male God, often called the Lady and Lord.
• Wicca is polytheistic (belief in many deities): Many Wiccans recognize the existence of many ancient Gods and Goddesses, including but certainly not limited to: Aphrodite, Artemis, Briget, Diana, Dionysius, Fergus, Hecate, Isis, Pan, Thor, etc.
• Wicca is henotheistic (belief in a single main deity among many): Many Wiccans view the many ancient deities as being aspects of the Lady and Lord, and view the latter as the male and female aspects of “The One.”

(excerpted from: http://www.religious tolerance.org)

There is no right or wrong to any of the beliefs above. The underlying principle is that of polarity and the belief that there is both the masculine and feminine Divine principle within all living beings. This approach to deity supports the belief in the immanence of the Divine. That the qualities of Deity exist within all of life, and that through acknowledgement and embracing of this inherent birthright, that Divinity may become transcendent in nature.

The Natural World

imgres

WICCA is considered a nature-based religion. The environment and those things that comprise the manifest world including animals, plants, minerals are considered sacred and part of the Divine web of interconnectedness. Many Wiccans are involved in environmental activities and feel it a natural part of their spiritual practice to recycle and live lightly on Mother Earth. The use and knowledge of herbs and their medicinal properties is often undertaken gladly as a study of practice and it is not unusual to find many Wiccans attracted to professions where healing modalities can be performed. Animals are considered companions and treated with the same care, love and respect that would be afforded another human. Human and animal rights, environmental issues and preservation of our natural resources are all a focus of those following a Wiccan Path of spirituality.

The Cosmos

space

The ancients were limited to what could be seen with the naked eye or what mystical inferences could be gathered from what was overtly presented and the myths that were created as result. Structures were built in accord with the movement of the sun (Stonehenge and the Great Pyramid) that aligned with specific seasonal events and astrology had its beginnings in predicting certain outcomes and points of focus based on what could be observed in the heavens.

The scientific breakthroughs showing the similarities in or own physical constitution and that of the geology of our planet, as well as the stars and planets links us to our own stellar nature and the desire for access to weaving that universal magick of that starseed into all of our endeavors. According to scientist, Carl Sagan, the carbon, nitrogen and oxygen atoms in our bodies, as well as atoms of all other heavy elements, were created in previous generations of stars over 4.5 billion years ago.

One of the things that has not changed is that of the celebration and worship of the Moon and her energies and attributions within a Wiccan practice. The lunar tides are seen as the domain of the Goddess and the feminine energies. The planets and the magick woven with their energies extend the reach of practical magick into the realms of space and time continuum. And, the increasing awareness of our place within the vastness of the Cosmos provides a richly layered perspective for those of the Craft.

The Unseen World

“There are more things in this world…than are imagined in all your philosophies. “
… William Shakespeare …

This quote by William Shakespeare sums up the Wiccan belief in the reality and nature of those things that are seen as well as those that are hidden (occult). Science has proven time and again that many of the things which were previously thought to be the stuff of the imagination or improbable, are now the foundations, cornerstones and daily occurrences which make up our physical world. Given enough time, sweat, energy and belief anything is possible. Wiccans work daily with the energy surrounding all things. Much of the work that is done is accomplished in a world that everyday sight cannot see with clarity and without training the mind to “suspend disbelief”.  The physical realm is only one dimension that we allow ourselves access to. As a Wiccan, we learn to see the realms of Faery, the Devas (nature spirits), the ancestral spirits that guide us, the auras and subtle bodies, and the continual and changing flow of life’s energies that surround us.

The Craft of the Wise

4a7757c91dcfae52022e218a38d4f035

The practice of WICCA is one that sees the interconnectedness of everything.  And, because all is connected Wiccans choose to explore and are open to learning about how the universe works. Observation is key to many of those explorations. Being able to discern what is what in the mundane world develops the skill of being able to more clearly identify what is present in the astral and unseen realms. There are many things that go unnoticed in our daily routines. Walking down the same street we often ignore the small signs that nature is donning new clothes. The tiniest budding of grass (or weed) between the cement blocks heralds the start of Spring, but we rarely seek to find something so small.

This attitude of curiosity and inquiry requires the knowledge of several other disciplines to form a cohesive foundation from which to build your experience and knowledge base. The principles of basic Astrology are helpful tools to be used as a point of reference for planning rituals, finding out more about those celestial energies that were present at the time of your birth and gaining greater insight into the cycles and rhythms of the lunar tides and planetary bodies. The art of Divination is another tool that a practicing Wiccan will routinely employ. Tarot cards, runes pendulums, mirror scrying, geomancy and more are all tools to gain greater knowledge of those unseen forces and energies at work that surround us. Having this form of additional insight can stimulate more informed choices about the decisions that are made, and as always free will is the guiding hand. In more recent years the addition of the Hermetic Qabalah has proven useful to many practicing Wiccans. This proven system of analysis and connection to aspects of self and the world at large is a rich and multi-layered study that opens new vistas for experience of the natural and inner worlds.

Establishing regular energy practices is also a vital part of the Wiccan spiritual Path. Daily Meditation should be foundational part of that practice. This trains you to quiet the mind and direct the intent of focus in a variety of ways. The flexible of mind and ability to remain centered in the midst of chaotic energies is one that will serve you well as you learn the ways of disciplining the mind and body. Breath work is key to moving energy effectively and beginning with simple practices of awareness of breath goes a long way in support of energetically providing the fuel for the actions of will. Spending some time connecting with the energies of a specific Deity and offering oneself in a place of service to humanity is a key goal towards transforming how we move energetically through the world. With this goal in mind, the body is seen as a Temple of the Divine. So, great care is given to cultivating healthy and supportive practices that will be in keeping with this sense of immanence.

In Conclusion:

As stated earlier, the definition of Wicca and its practices is varied, complex, rich with meaning for each who define and because it is a path of initiation and growth will largely be influenced by how far along that path the practitioner has gone. With that in mind, I offer another Witch’s perspective.

What is Wicca? A Personal Perspective
©1998 Cecylyna Dewr

“There are probably as many definitions of Wicca (also known as “the Craft”, Witchcraft, or the Old Religion) as there are practitioners -one of the joys of this path is that there is no “one, true way”; intuition is as valuable as teaching. This then is my personal definition of what Wicca is to me.

Wicca is a religion based on experience of Deity as male and female. It is panentheistic-seeing all things as part of God/dess, and seeing the Earth Herself as a living organism of whom we are part. It is also a religion of immanence-seeing God/dess present here and now, within all things, not “out there somewhere” but part of daily life. Wiccans revere Nature in all her forms, and often are active environmentalists. Wiccans celebrate eight major holidays, the beginning and midpoint of each season. Wiccans also celebrate the phases of the moon. Each of these rituals or observances helps us attune with the ever-changing cycles of Nature.

Wicca is also a Craft. We practice magic using meditation, chants, visualization and spells to help focus our will on what we want to happen. Wiccans believe that everything we do, good or ill, comes back to us tripled, which is why we don’t hex or curse anyone. We also believe that many psychic talents are real and simply haven’t been studied enough by science to be catalogued as such.”

Journaling

The Magickal Journal

One of the main stays of magickal work and studies is keeping a journal. This offers opportunity to look back at early steps and progress made, pulls to the surface areas that may need more practice and is a great tool for committing to writing those moments of inner reflection and the change, event, images and feelings that presented.

I had always been rather resistant to the thought of journaling, particularly the idea of having to take “precious” time away from the actual practice and experience of doing the work. It took some time before I realized that this simple, yet powerfully effective tool, would be my most informative resource for what was actually affecting change in myself at all levels of being- physical- mental-emotional- spiritual. So, I started out slowly. I only recorded the highlights of whatever endeavor I was engaged in. These were as simple as some new idea I had come across or a different energetic exercise I had tried.

After a few months of beginning in this manner, I soon became hooked and couldn’t wait to write down everything I tried, read or experienced. The additional incentive came by way of being able to look back after several months and actually see a thread of pattern to the magickal process I was undertaking. To see the progress made when I had started a new practice and how that practice had either been used as a stepping stone towards something more fulfilling or had become a routine and seamless core of my magickal work.

I now have several journals, all being kept concurrently and each relating to a specific area of my magickal work. One for astrology, one for qabala, one for my esoteric writings, one for ritual writing, etc.. It may seem like overkill, but keeping a specific journal for each gives me a way of organizing and keeping relevant material together, especially when I use that material at a later date.

An added bonus to developing the discipline of journaling came as he foundations for my being able to write and find my voice in that writing evolved from those journals. And, although I use technology as the main tool for the writing I do, there is some material that I commit to pen and paper first as they require the tactile energetic. These I keep in a special journal and use the writings as needed for blogs, workshops, books and teaching.

Some tips for getting started:

  • Select a journal that you absolutely love. It can be something as simple as a small spiral bound notebook or as elaborate as a finely crafted writing journal.
  • Personalize it in some way. This serves a two-fold purpose. First, it ensures that you will be using something that you enjoy using. And, secondly, when you engage a component that requires kinesthetic (the actual hands on of gluing, pasting, drawing, etc..) and thinking ( selection of what will be your stamp of personalization) you have created an important energetic link to the object.

Observation

Adding to the Image Bank

Visualization is a key component to successful magickal work. Everyone has the ability to conjure up an image of something they are familiar with on their inner screen. This process of familiarity is drawn from the storehouses of memory and all of the images we continually are exposed to as we move through our daily activities. The image of what we wish to manifest or draw to ourselves becomes the goal to which will and desire are catalyzed into action.

This skill is one that can be further enhanced by the simple act of consciously observing your surroundings. Each image of observation is recorded and stored for future use. Additionally, the other sensorial experience we attach to this image embed it in a way that smell, sound or touch is the only trigger needed to recall the image to mind. For me, the smell of baby powder pulls up the image of freshly bathed babies and the wonderful sensation of holding my precious infants close to heart.

Observing Your World:

Select an activity that you regularly and routinely do such as walking or driving (safety first, please) to work or school, a class you attend, your favorite coffee shop, etc. For at least one full week each day make a note of one thing new that you observe that you never noticed before. It can be something as trivial as noting how long a light takes to change or something more covert such as the first bud of a flower or plant. Each day try to “see” something new. Becoming more aware of the little details that cross your path each day, you become more aware of the inherent interconnectedness of all things. You will also more clearly see what effect you may have on that minor detail, or how it may effect you in ways you were unaware of previously.

The Four-Fold Breath Technique

The Four-Fold breath practice is one from Eastern practice that is used to clear the mind, act as a point of focus and move you into the automatic response of relaxed and even space of inhalation and exhalation with pause of hold in between. It also develops awareness and control of the breathing process, which is the foundation of energy work. This technique also provides greater relaxation and deeper breathing, using fuller capacity of the lungs. This is an excellent way to begin a meditative session or use as way to relax into and open to the journaling process.

End Note:
If you have been following the exercises offered as Foundations of Practice, you are off to a great start in the process of internalizing the information contained in Lesson One. These were meant to shift your awareness into that of being a conscious participant in your daily routine and to prime the engine, if you will for the work that follows.
