Down the Rabbit Hole – Part One
The Dark Side of the Light
At some point in the journey on our spiritual path we must encounter another aspect of our nature that is often called the “shadow self”. This encounter is an important milestone in keeping us moving forward along our chosen path, and it is at that juncture that we come upon the divergent crossroads that offer choice of either embrace or retreat in this lifetime. Stepping into the center of this space of opening can very much be the type of experience Alice (of “Alice in Wonderland”) had in falling down the rabbit hole. Cramped in some spaces, too large in others and completely disorienting and unplanned for in process. In fact, if we look more deeply at the metaphorical implications of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, we could conclude that all of the characters were aspects of Alice in their varying levels of evolved or devolved state. These permutations and subtleties are similar to the varying shades of light and dark experienced when we speak of our light body and our shadow or dark other. On either end of the spectrum we have the most pure essence of what that aspect of our being comprises. However, it is necessary to form alliance with all of the variances and characters of archetype that present in between to act as guides and guardians in order to reach these pure forms. Read More…

Down the Rabbit Hole – Part Two
In the Beginning…
Beginning shadow work can be a bit like going down the rabbit hole. It is challenging at best and an unbearable task shrouded in the fear of what may be lurking at the base of that long fall into the inner well of darkness. Ultimately, it can be one of the most rewarding types of work that forces you to stretch and grow in areas you would have otherwise left to wither and die. The key is in the selection of just the right amount of each aspect that will allow you to move into the next phase of your journey.
Many times what you thought to be true for yourself will be challenged and tested as you reveal some of the underlying reasons for the way in which you move through life. The fear is of the death of what is good and pure within yourself. We all wish to be seen in a positive light and the work of exploring our shadow self can provide clues and greater understanding of those qualities we wish to enhance and accentuate, those that we hold in reserve for the appropriate times and those that serve no useful purpose in this lifetime other than the fact that we are now more aware of those characteristics in a way that is informed. This is a journey that only you can make with only your own resources, experiences and inner knowing as guides to light the way. Read More…

Down the Rabbit Hole – Part Three
A Journey of No End
We’ve covered but a few of the concepts that tell the story of the Shadow and the human’s work of getting to know and working collaboratively with this part of themselves. This is the work of not simply one lifetime, but the cumulative effort of many and the memories carried forward with each that we choose (or choose not) to access as supports.
I have always viewed shadow work as that of continual evolvement. In other words, that my shadow nature is one and the same with who and what I perceive myself to be in the Light. It is neither less or more useful; nor, is it one to be ignored or glamorized. It simply “is” a fundamental part of “me” that makes me more fully who I am; stripped naked and vulnerable in my humanity as my Divinity takes on a slightly different mantle. As such, as I evolve, so too does it; albeit perhaps on another track, yet one that moves parallel to what I claim as myself in form and force as one of corporeal form who exudes a light that is “more”. I was just reading about the shadow archetype in a wonderful book by Annis Pratt called “Archetypal Patterns in Women’s Fiction.” I am using this book as a tool for my own archetypal analysis of books by three British women writers. I have gone through this same sort of journey as I was initiated into motherhood and dealt with loss of self. Your article is fascinating and inspired me to delve into my own recollection of my journey “down the rabbit hole!”
So glad you found this useful!
